Chapter 6: The Secret Lily Took to Her Grave

I read Lily's letter until the words began to blur.

Rebecca took it from me and examined the paper.

"Marcus, we need to preserve this.""

I nodded.

But my thoughts were somewhere else.

October 14.

The hospital.

My father.

The newborn baby.

And now Lily's warning.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why didn't you give me this before?""

She stared at her hands.

"Because I was afraid you'd leave.""

"Leave?""

"After Lily died, I thought we could have a normal life. I thought if I kept everything quiet, it would eventually disappear.""

I stood.

"You let me believe my father was dead. You hid documents about my daughter. You transferred her inheritance.""

"I was trying to protect everyone.""

"From what?""

She began crying harder.

"From the truth.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"We need the hospital records.""

Rebecca nodded.

"I'll contact the hospital's legal department. But access may be limited, especially because the records are old.""

"I don't care how long it takes.""

She placed Lily's letter inside a protective folder.

"First, I want to understand the photograph. Why was your father at the hospital that day?""

Vanessa looked up.

"Because Lily had given birth.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"October 14 was the day Maya was born.""

I felt the room tilt.

Maya's birthday was October 14.

I'd known that for seven years.

But the photograph showed Lily standing beside my father, holding a newborn.

I remembered the hospital room.

The blue curtains.

The nurse bringing Maya to me.

Lily smiling through exhaustion.

I remembered everything.

And I remembered my father not being there.

He had called me that evening.

He'd said he was too sick to visit.

I'd believed him.

"Why was he outside the hospital?"" I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Did you see him?""

"No.""

"Then how do you know he was there?""

She looked away.

"Rachel told me.""

I called Rachel.

She answered with a whisper.

"Marcus?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Why did Lily's letter say October 14?""

Rachel went silent.

I continued.

"Why was my father at the hospital the day Maya was born?""

Another silence.

Then Rachel said, "Because Lily asked him to come.""

"Why?""

"She wanted him to meet Maya.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why didn't she ask me to bring him?""

"Because she was afraid.""

"Of me?""

"No. Of what your father might say.""

I closed my eyes.

"Rachel, I'm done with half-truths.""

"I understand.""

"Then tell me what happened.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Your father had been conducting a private investigation into his own family. He discovered that Edward had been falsifying financial documents for years. Lily found evidence that the company was being used to move money through accounts connected to several relatives.""

"And Maya?""

"Your father believed Maya's birth would expose another secret.""

"What secret?""

Rachel's voice cracked.

"Marcus, you need to come to the house.""

"Which house?""

"Lily's parents' house.""

"Why?""

"Because I found something in the safe.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She nodded.

"We're coming," I said.

The old house smelled of dust, cedar, and the lavender detergent Lily's mother had always used.

I hadn't been there since the funeral.

The blue front door still had a brass butterfly attached to it.

Maya had chosen it when she was four.

I touched it briefly before entering.

Rachel was waiting in the hallway.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, and her hands were clasped tightly together.

"Thank you for coming.""

I didn't hug her.

"Show me the safe.""

She led us upstairs.

Lily's old bedroom was exactly as I remembered it.

The white curtains.

The wooden dresser.

The framed photograph of Lily holding Maya as a baby.

Rachel knelt beside the wardrobe and removed a small panel.

Behind it was a metal safe.

She entered the code.

The door opened.

Inside were several folders, a small USB drive, and a sealed envelope.

Rachel handed me the envelope.

"She left this specifically for you.""

I opened it.

There was a letter and a hospital bracelet.

The bracelet had a name written on it.

Maya Carter.

And beneath the name was a second identification number.

Rebecca examined it.

"This could help us request the original birth records.""

I turned toward Rachel.

"Why did Lily keep this hidden?""

Rachel lowered her eyes.

"Because the hospital made an error that day.""

"What kind of error?""

She removed a folder.

Inside were photocopies of medical records, laboratory results, and a document signed by my father.

I scanned the first page.

It was a report from the hospital's newborn unit.

Two babies had been born within minutes of each other.

One belonged to Lily.

The other belonged to another woman.

My heart began pounding.

"Why are there two sets of records?""

Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.

"Because the hospital temporarily mixed up the identification bracelets.""

Rebecca looked up sharply.

"Are you saying the babies were switched?""

"Not exactly.""

"What does that mean?""

Rachel pointed to a handwritten note.

"Lily discovered the problem before leaving the hospital. She insisted on a DNA test.""

I stared at the documents.

"And the result?""

Rachel's face crumpled.

"That's what Lily wanted you to see.""

I turned the page.

A laboratory report.

Two names.

Marcus Carter.

Maya Carter.

The result was clearly printed.

*Probability of paternity: 99.99%.*

My knees weakened.

Maya was my daughter.

I had never doubted it.

But why had Lily been so frightened?

Why had my father signed a separate document?

And why was there another report in the folder?

I pulled it out.

This one was dated three weeks later.

The names were different.

Edward Hayes.

Maya Carter.

The result was marked inconclusive.

I looked at Rachel.

"What is this?""

She didn't answer.

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note in Lily's familiar handwriting.

Edward demanded another test. He believes Maya is connected to his family. He is threatening to expose something that has nothing to do with Marcus.

Rebecca took the report.

"Marcus, we need to be careful. An inconclusive result proves nothing.""

I nodded.

But Rachel was already crying.

"There's more.""

She opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph of my father holding baby Maya.

On the back, he had written:

*My granddaughter. The one person Edward can never use against Marcus.*

I stared at the words.

Then Rachel finally spoke.

"Your father discovered that Edward had been using the family business to hide money belonging to someone else.""

"Who?""

Rachel looked directly at me.

"Your mother.""

I frowned.

"My mother died when I was twelve.""

"I know.""

"Then what money?""

Rachel took a deep breath.

"Your mother left behind a private estate. Your father never disclosed it. He placed part of it into a trust for you, and later Lily discovered that Edward had been trying to claim control of it.""

Rebecca slowly closed the folder.

"How is Maya connected?""

Rachel looked at the photograph.

"Because your father transferred the remaining estate into Maya's name before he died.""

I stared at the documents.

"Why?""

"Because he believed Edward would eventually come after you.""

A strange noise came from downstairs.

The front door opened.

We all turned.

Footsteps moved across the hallway.

Then a familiar voice called out.

"Rachel?""

My blood went cold.

Vanessa.

She appeared at the top of the stairs.

Her eyes immediately went to the open safe.

"What are you doing?""

I stood between her and the documents.

"How did you know we were here?""

She looked at Rachel.

Then at me.

"Because I know what's inside that safe.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

Vanessa's expression crumbled.

"Because Lily gave me the key before she died.""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small silver key.

Then she whispered something that changed everything.

"Marcus, your father didn't leave Maya the money because he wanted to protect her from Edward.""

She looked at the DNA report in Rebecca's hand.

"He left it to her because he knew Edward was going to claim that Maya wasn't your daughter.""

I stared at the woman I'd married.

"Why would Edward say that?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Edward is Maya's biological grandfather.""

The room went silent.

May you like

And before I could ask another question, Vanessa added:

"Your father knew that long before Maya was born.""
