Chapter 14: The Last Thing Lily Tried to Tell Me

We went to the hospital the following morning.

Not because Edward had demanded it.

Because Rebecca had obtained authorization to review Lily's archived medical records.

Thomas accompanied us, along with a hospital compliance officer named Dr. Bennett.

Vanessa came too.

She had agreed to provide a formal statement.

I hadn't forgiven her.

I wasn't sure I ever could.

But if she knew what happened to Lily, I needed to hear it.

Dr. Bennett led us into a small conference room.

"I've reviewed the records you requested," he began.

"There are several irregularities.""

Rebecca opened her notebook.

"Such as?""

"Medication orders were entered under Dr. Cole's credentials, but the electronic access logs show that some orders were modified from an external terminal.""

"Who had access?""

Dr. Bennett looked at the screen.

"Three people.""

He listed the names.

Dr. Martin Cole.

A hospital administrator.

And Edward Hayes.

I stared at him.

"Edward wasn't a doctor.""

"No. But he had temporary access through a private medical sponsorship program connected to the hospital.""

Rebecca frowned.

"Who approved that?""

Dr. Bennett turned the screen.

The authorization carried the signature of the hospital's former director.

He had retired shortly after Lily's death.

I looked at the records.

"Was Lily conscious during her final hours?""

Dr. Bennett hesitated.

"According to the nursing notes, she was intermittently responsive.""

"Could she speak?""

"Yes.""

I leaned forward.

"Did she ask to see me?""

He checked the records.

Then he stopped.

"There's a note here.""

He turned the screen toward us.

Patient repeatedly requests husband. Family member states husband has been notified.

I stared at the sentence.

"Who was the family member?""

Dr. Bennett scrolled.

The name appeared.

Vanessa Carter.

I slowly turned toward my wife.

She covered her mouth.

"She asked for me?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

"I did.""

"When?""

"That night.""

I shook my head.

"I never received a call.""

She began crying.

"Edward told me you were already on your way. He said he had contacted you.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why didn't you call again?""

"Because he told me Lily was confused and didn't want visitors.""

I stood.

"She was asking for her husband!""

"I know.""

"She was dying!""

"I know!""

Vanessa broke down.

Rebecca raised a hand.

"Let's continue.""

Dr. Bennett opened another file.

"This is the final medication administration record.""

The medication listed was different from Lily's prescribed treatment.

Rebecca examined it.

"Who authorized this?""

Dr. Bennett enlarged the document.

A handwritten signature appeared.

Robert Carter.

My father.

I felt the room tilt.

"Did he have authority to authorize medication?""

"No.""

"Then why was his signature accepted?""

Dr. Bennett looked uncomfortable.

"That's part of the investigation.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"Did you see him sign it?""

She nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You were there?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"He told Lily that he was sorry.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did Lily say?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"She told him to stop pretending he cared.""

I looked at her.

Then she continued.

"Lily said she had copies of everything. She said she'd already sent the original ledger to someone she trusted.""

"Who?""

"She wouldn't tell him.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Did Robert threaten her?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. He begged her to listen.""

I stared at the medical records.

My father had signed the medication order.

But perhaps he hadn't understood what he was signing.

Perhaps he'd been manipulated too.

Then Vanessa said something that made me turn.

"Lily asked me to stay with her after Robert left.""

"Why?""

"She wanted to tell me something.""

"What?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"She said she knew Edward had been using your father's guilt against him.""

I frowned.

"What guilt?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Your father believed he had caused your mother's death.""

I went still.

My mother.

The woman who had died when I was twelve.

"That's impossible. She died in a car accident.""

Vanessa nodded.

"That's what the family was told.""

I stared at her.

"What really happened?""

"Your mother had discovered Edward was stealing from the company. She confronted your father. They argued. She left the house in the middle of the night.""

I felt sick.

"And the accident?""

"Edward was the last person who spoke to her.""

Rebecca closed her notebook.

"That's a serious allegation.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Lily found the original police report. It showed that the brakes on your mother's car had been tampered with.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because your father believed Edward would come after you if the investigation continued.""

I looked at the documents.

Three deaths.

My mother.

My father.

Lily.

All connected to Edward.

And all connected to a secret that had been hidden for years.

That afternoon, Rebecca arranged a secure meeting with the bank holding Lily's safety deposit box.

Maya accompanied us because her identification was required.

She held my hand as we entered the private banking room.

"Is Mommy's treasure inside?"" she asked.

I smiled faintly.

"Something like that.""

A bank officer examined the silver key and Maya's identification documents.

After verifying the legal authorization, he opened the box.

Inside were three items.

A small envelope.

A flash drive.

And a photograph of Lily holding Maya in the hospital.

Maya reached for the photograph.

"That's me!""

I nodded.

"That's you, sweetheart.""

She smiled.

The bank officer handed me the envelope.

Lily's handwriting appeared across the front.

*For Marcus and Maya.*

I opened it carefully.

The letter was short.

Marcus, if you have reached this point, then the truth has finally become stronger than the fear surrounding it.

I need you to know that I never doubted you as Maya's father. Whatever Edward tells you about blood, inheritance, or family history, none of it changes the man who held our daughter when she first opened her eyes.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

I continued.

Your father made terrible decisions. But he was not the only person who was manipulated. I believe Edward used his guilt over your mother's death to control him.

The original ledger is not the most important evidence.

The flash drive contains a recording Edward made on the night your father disappeared.

I looked at Rebecca.

She took the drive.

"Let's listen somewhere secure.""

But Maya tugged my sleeve.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Can I keep Mommy's picture?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Of course.""

She placed it carefully inside her little backpack.

Then she looked at the letter.

"Did Mommy write something for me?""

I found the final paragraph.

My beautiful Maya, if Daddy is reading this to you, remember that you were loved before you were born, while you were growing, and in every moment after. Never let anyone make you feel that you have to earn a place in your family.

I knelt and read it aloud.

Maya listened quietly.

When I finished, she hugged me.

"I miss Mommy.""

"I do too.""

"Do you think she can see me?""

I held her closer.

"I think everything she wanted for you was to be happy.""

Maya nodded.

Then she looked at the flash drive.

"What's that?""

"Something Mommy saved for us.""

Back at Rebecca's office, Thomas connected the drive to a secure computer.

A video file appeared.

The recording showed Edward sitting in my father's office.

He was speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

Then another voice answered.

My father's.

Edward leaned forward.

"You should have signed the transfer months ago.""

Robert replied, "Maya isn't yours to use.""

Edward laughed.

"She's family.""

"She's a child.""

"She's the only way I can recover what your father stole from me.""

My father stood.

"Your father gave you everything he could.""

Edward's expression hardened.

"He gave me scraps.""

Then he reached into his jacket and placed a bottle on the desk.

My father stared at it.

"What is that?""

"Insurance.""

Robert shook his head.

"Don't involve Lily.""

Edward leaned closer.

"She's already involved.""

The recording continued.

Edward lowered his voice.

"If you don't sign the documents, I'll tell Marcus everything about his mother.""

My father went pale.

"What do you want?""

"Control of the estate. The ledger. And the girl.""

My father shook his head.

"Never.""

Edward smiled.

"Then perhaps we should discuss what happens when Lily takes another dose.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas froze the final frame.

He zoomed in on a reflection in the office window.

A third person was standing behind the camera.

A woman.

Rebecca leaned closer.

"Who is that?""

I stared at the reflection.

The woman's face was partially visible.

But I recognized the necklace.

It was the same silver butterfly Maya wore in the photograph.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the screen.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"That's me.""
