Chapter 7: The Truth About Maya's Blood

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stared at Vanessa, waiting for her to take back what she'd just said.

She didn't.

Instead, she placed the silver key on the dresser and wiped her cheeks.

"Say that again," I whispered.

Vanessa looked at the DNA report in Rebecca's hand.

"Edward Hayes is Maya's biological grandfather.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"Marcus—"

"My father was Robert Carter. Edward was his business partner. There is no connection between Edward and my family.""

Rachel stood near the open safe.

"That's not entirely true.""

I turned toward her.

"Then explain it.""

Rachel picked up the photograph of my father holding Maya.

"Your father and Edward were half-brothers.""

The room seemed to shrink.

I looked at the photograph again.

Robert Carter had always described Edward as his closest friend. They had built their company together, attended charity dinners together, and spent holidays at our family home.

My father had never mentioned having a brother.

"Why would he hide that?""

Rachel answered quietly.

"Because Edward was born from an affair your grandfather had before marrying your grandmother. Your father knew about him, but the family never acknowledged him publicly.""

I lowered myself onto the edge of the bed.

"So Edward is my uncle.""

"Yes," Rachel said.

"And if he's Maya's grandfather...""

I stopped.

Vanessa nodded.

"He's your daughter's grandfather through your family.""

I looked at the second DNA report.

The inconclusive result suddenly made more sense.

But something still bothered me.

"Why would Edward demand a DNA test if he already knew?""

Rachel took another document from the safe.

"Because he wanted legal grounds to challenge the estate.""

Rebecca examined it.

"This is a preliminary report, not a confirmed relationship test.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Edward believed that if he could establish Maya's biological connection to the family, he could use her inheritance to gain access to the estate.""

"Why would Maya's inheritance give him access?""

Rachel answered.

"Because your father transferred controlling interests in several family investments into a structure that would eventually benefit Maya. Edward wanted those assets.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"And you helped him?""

She flinched.

"I didn't know what he intended at first.""

"How convenient.""

"I swear.""

I stood.

"You took money from my daughter's trust. You lied about the shopping. You hid Lily's letters. Now you're telling me you helped my father's business partner investigate my daughter.""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"I was trying to keep Edward away from her.""

"By giving him access to her money?""

She looked down.

"I made mistakes.""

"Thirty-eight thousand dollars isn't a mistake. It's a decision made repeatedly.""

Rebecca closed the folder.

"We should stop discussing this until we've reviewed every document.""

I nodded.

Then I turned toward Rachel.

"Why did Lily trust you with all this?""

Rachel looked at the photograph.

"Because she knew I would never let Edward get near Maya.""

"Then why did you approve the transfers?""

Rachel's face went pale.

"I didn't approve them willingly.""

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?""

Rachel sat down.

"Edward threatened me. He had information about my husband, Daniel.""

I frowned.

"Your husband?""

"He had been involved in one of Edward's companies. When he discovered the financial irregularities, he tried to report them. Edward threatened to expose him for signing documents he didn't understand.""

Rachel's voice trembled.

"I was afraid we'd lose everything.""

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Did you knowingly authorize transfers from Maya's trust?""

Rachel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then you need to understand that fear doesn't automatically excuse the transactions.""

"I know.""

She looked at me.

"I wanted to tell you. But Vanessa kept saying she could fix everything before you found out.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

She didn't deny it.

Instead, she walked to the window.

"Edward told me that if I cooperated, he'd make sure Tyler and Sophie were financially secure.""

I stared at her.

"So you sacrificed Maya's inheritance for your children.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I thought I could replace the money.""

"And when you couldn't?""

She remained silent.

Rebecca placed the documents into her folder.

"Marcus, we need to contact the bank, secure the remaining trust assets, and obtain independent DNA testing if anyone intends to rely on these claims.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed something written on the bottom of Lily's letter.

A small sentence I'd overlooked.

If Edward ever comes forward, ask him about the night Robert disappeared.

I looked at Rachel.

"Did my father really die in December?""

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Then why did Edward tell me his death wasn't natural?""

Rachel swallowed.

"Because your father was poisoned.""

Vanessa began crying again.

I stood completely still.

"Who did it?""

Rachel shook her head.

"We don't know.""

"Was there an investigation?""

"Not a serious one. Edward handled the arrangements. He told everyone Robert had suffered complications from his illness.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She was already making notes.

"Do we have medical records?""

Rachel pointed toward the safe.

"Everything Lily collected is in there.""

I turned back to the documents.

A new question had formed in my mind.

If my father had been murdered, and Edward had controlled the business, the estate, and the funeral arrangements, then perhaps the man who had been threatening my daughter was also the man who had killed my father.

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

*You have twenty-four hours to stop asking questions about the Carter estate.*

A second message followed.

*Or Maya will learn what really happened to her mother.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

It contained a photograph.

Maya was standing outside her school that morning.

Someone had taken it from across the street.

And beneath the picture were six words.

*We know where your daughter goes.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Rebecca looked over my shoulder.

"Marcus?""

I showed her the message.

She immediately reached for her phone.

"We're contacting the police.""

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely terrified.

"Edward," she whispered.

I turned toward her.

"What?""

"That's how he always communicates when he wants someone to obey.""

I picked up the silver key.

"Then we're finished obeying him.""

But before I could move, Rachel grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, wait.""

Her eyes were fixed on the photograph of Maya.

"There's something Lily told me that I never put in those documents.""

"What?""

Rachel swallowed.

"Your father didn't just leave Maya an inheritance.""

She lowered her voice.

May you like

"He left her the original evidence that could put Edward in prison.""

And suddenly, I understood why someone was watching my daughter.
