Chapter 3: The Secret Inside the Deed

Robert tried to laugh.

It was a fake laugh.

The kind people make when they are scared but don’t want anyone to notice.

“A deed file?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Nia, you’re grieving. You don’t know what you’re saying.””

I slowly stood up using the porch railing.

My legs felt weak.

My heart felt stronger.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Who is Marcus?””

I didn’t answer.

That bothered her.

People like Vanessa hated silence.

They needed control.

They needed reactions.

They needed to know they were winning.

And I wasn’t giving her anything.

Robert stepped closer.

“Your husband was not the owner of this house.””

I looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

His face changed slightly.

A tiny movement.

Most people wouldn’t notice.

But I did.

Because Daniel spent years teaching me that the smallest details reveal the biggest truths.

“You knew something,” I whispered.

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“I don’t know what you think you found.””

“I didn’t find anything.””

I touched my stomach.

“Daniel left something.””

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

Vanessa looked away.

Robert’s jaw tightened.

Daniel had always bothered him.

Not because Daniel was disrespectful.

Because Daniel was impossible to control.

My husband never raised his voice.

Never threatened anyone.

He simply stood his ground.

And Robert hated that.

“You think Daniel saved you?”” Robert said.

I looked at him.

“I know he did.””

Robert stepped back.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

The words were strange.

Not angry.

Not confident.

A warning.

I studied his face.

For the first time, I wondered if Robert wasn’t just trying to take something.

Maybe he was trying to hide something.

Before I could respond, Vanessa’s phone rang.

She checked the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

Robert looked at her.

“What is it?””

She ignored him.

Then his phone rang.

Then mine.

A notification appeared.

Then another.

The three of us stood there staring at our screens.

Robert looked confused.

Vanessa looked nervous.

I looked calm.

Because I knew.

Marcus had started.

Robert opened his message first.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?””

He turned the phone away.

“Nothing.””

But his voice was different.

Not powerful.

Not commanding.

Afraid.

I watched him.

The man who threw me out.

The man who believed he had won.

The man who never once questioned his own actions.

Now he was staring at a phone like it held a threat.

“Robert?”” Vanessa asked.

He didn’t answer.

I looked toward the front door.

The boxes inside.

The house.

The life they tried to steal.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A message from Marcus.

Only five words.

“Everything is in motion.””

I closed my eyes.

Because Daniel’s final promise was becoming real.

Robert finally looked at me.

“What did you do?””

I met his eyes.

“I stopped you.””

The confidence disappeared from his face.

And then his phone vibrated again.

This time, the sound was different.

May you like

Not a message.

A warning.
