Chapter 8: My Husband’s Final Message
Robert’s voice echoed across the porch.
“No one is listening to that.””
For a second, everyone froze.
Not because he sounded powerful.
Because he sounded terrified.
And fear reveals people.
It removes the mask.
It shows what they are trying to hide.
Marcus slowly turned toward him.
“Why not?””
Robert opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the first time I saw him with no answer.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Just fear.
My mother looked at him.
“You knew.””
Robert looked at her.
“Elaine, don’t.””
“You knew Daniel left something.””
His silence was enough.
Vanessa stepped back.
“You knew about this?””
Robert turned toward her.
“Stay out of it.””
Her face changed.
That was the moment she realized she was never his partner.
She was just another person he thought he could control.
Marcus placed the folder on the porch table.
“We’re going to listen.””
Robert shook his head.
“You have no right.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You lost that argument the moment you tried to remove the legal owner from her home.””
The words hit hard.
Legal owner.
I still wasn’t used to hearing it.
Because for so long, Robert made me feel like I needed permission to exist.
Now the truth was standing in front of him.
And he couldn’t change it.
Marcus removed a small device from the folder.
Not dramatic.
Not mysterious.
Just a simple recording device.
A piece of technology holding the last words from the man I loved.
My hands started shaking.
Daniel.
I wasn’t ready.
But I needed to hear him.
Marcus pressed play.
Static filled the porch.
Then—
“Nia.””
My knees almost gave out.
Because it was his voice.
The same voice that said good morning.
The same voice that whispered I love you before sleeping.
The same voice I thought I would never hear again.
Everyone became silent.
Even Robert.
Especially Robert.
Daniel continued.
“If you’re hearing this, it means something happened that I hoped would never happen.””
I covered my mouth.
Tears filled my eyes.
Marcus looked away, giving me privacy.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“Nia, I need you to know something first.””
A pause.
“I never left you unprotected.””
My heart broke.
Because that was exactly what I had felt.
Unprotected.
Alone.
Abandoned.
But Daniel knew.
He knew.
“You may feel like everyone turned against you.””
Another pause.
“But don’t let their choices make you question your worth.””
I closed my eyes.
My baby moved beneath my hand.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“The house was never the most important thing.””
I looked at Robert.
His expression was unreadable.
“The home was important because it was where we built our life.””
A breath.
“But the truth is more important than the walls.””
Marcus glanced at the folder.
There was more.
Much more.
Daniel continued.
“I discovered someone was trying to take what belonged to you.””
Robert looked away.
Vanessa noticed.
“Robert…”
He ignored her.
“I wanted to confront them,” Daniel said.
“But Marcus convinced me to be careful.””
A small sound escaped my throat.
Marcus had known.
Daniel trusted him.
“I made a decision,” Daniel continued.
“If something happened to me, everything would move automatically.””
The recording paused.
Then Daniel said the sentence that changed the entire atmosphere.
“The person you think betrayed you is not the only person involved.””
Everyone looked up.
A chill moved through me.
Not the only person.
Marcus stopped the recording.
Everyone stared at him.
“Why did you stop?””
I asked.
He looked at me.
“Because Daniel wanted me to explain the next part in person.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
Marcus looked toward Robert.
“Because the next information affects everyone standing on this porch.””
Robert immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus didn’t react.
“You don’t get to stop this.””
My father’s face twisted.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Marcus picked up the folder.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“What is in there?””
Marcus looked at her.
“The reason Daniel documented everything.””
I felt the world narrow.
One house.
One porch.
One truth waiting to come out.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were more documents.
More evidence.
More answers.
He looked directly at Robert.
Then he said:
“The person who started this entire plan wasn’t trying to steal the house.””
A pause.
“They were trying to hide what happened to Daniel.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
My fingers tightened around the railing.
Because suddenly this was no longer about property.
No longer about money.
No longer about betrayal.
It was about the man I loved.
And the truth about how I lost him.
Marcus pulled out the next document.
May you like
And my father whispered the only thing he could say.
“Don’t open that.””
