Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Plan
I stared at the photograph.
The edges were slightly worn.
Like it had been carried around for a long time.
Like someone wanted to keep proof of something that wasn’t supposed to exist.
Daniel stood in the picture.
My Daniel.
The man who smiled every morning before work.
The man who danced badly in our kitchen just to make me laugh.
The man who held my hand during every doctor appointment.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone I never expected to see.
My hands started shaking.
“No.””
Marcus watched my face carefully.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked again.
Hoping I was wrong.
Hoping grief had somehow distorted what I was seeing.
But it hadn’t.
The truth was right there.
Robert noticed my reaction.
“What is it?””
I turned the photo around.
I didn’t say anything.
I didn’t have to.
The second he saw it, his expression changed.
Vanessa noticed.
“Robert?””
He looked away.
Too quickly.
That was enough.
“You know,” I said.
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Robert looked at me.
“Nia, listen—”
“No.””
My throat tightened.
“You knew.””
The porch felt smaller.
The house felt colder.
Even though the sunlight was still bright.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel began investigating after he noticed irregular activity connected to the property.””
“What kind of activity?””
Marcus looked at Robert.
“Financial withdrawals.””
Robert’s face hardened.
“That’s an accusation.””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“It’s a record.””
Vanessa looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
But then I remembered the way she smiled when I was forced outside.
The way she walked through my home like she already owned it.
She wasn’t confused.
She was waiting.
Robert crossed his arms.
“You’re twisting things.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you hide the paperwork?””
Robert’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Vanessa noticed.
“Robert?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the moment she realized she might not know him as well as she thought.
Funny.
Because I knew exactly how she felt.
For weeks, I had been discovering that the person I trusted most was someone I never truly knew.
Marcus looked at me.
“Daniel was trying to protect you.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because he was afraid.””
That hurt.
Daniel was not someone who scared easily.
“What was he afraid of?””
Marcus was quiet.
Then he said:
“That if the wrong people knew he had discovered the truth, they would move faster.””
I looked at my father.
The man who raised me.
The man who held me as a child.
The man who was now standing on my porch trying to steal my future.
“Were you going to wait until I gave birth?””
Robert’s eyes moved to mine.
“Nia—”
“Were you?””
He didn’t answer.
And silence is sometimes the loudest confession.
A car passed on the street.
A dog barked somewhere in the distance.
Normal sounds.
A normal morning.
Except my entire understanding of my family had collapsed.
Vanessa suddenly stepped toward Robert.
“You told me this was legal.””
Robert looked at her.
“It is.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You said everything was handled.””
“It is handled.””
“Then why is a lawyer standing here saying the opposite?””
Robert’s face turned angry.
“You need to calm down.””
That made Vanessa laugh.
A nervous laugh.
“You always say that when things go wrong.””
Robert stared at her.
And I saw something.
A crack.
Their perfect partnership was breaking.
Marcus checked his watch.
“I need everyone to understand something.””
We all looked at him.
“The legal process has already started.””
Robert frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means ownership has been temporarily frozen pending investigation.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Frozen?””
“Yes.””
“And us?””
Marcus looked at the house.
“That depends on what the investigation finds.””
Robert stepped closer.
“You’re threatening me?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at him.
“I’m warning you.””
The difference mattered.
Because Robert was used to threats.
Threats were something he understood.
Warnings were different.
Warnings meant consequences were already coming.
I looked down at the photo again.
Daniel.
Standing beside the person I never expected.
My hand moved to my stomach.
The baby shifted.
A tiny reminder that life was still moving forward.
Marcus noticed.
“You need to rest.””
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
I looked at him.
“There are too many questions.””
Marcus nodded.
“There are.””
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Marcus Reed.””
He listened.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Concern.
He looked at me.
Then at Robert.
Then back at me.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Marcus ended the call slowly.
“Nia…”
My heart sank.
“What?””
He looked toward the house.
“The person who helped Robert access the documents…”
May you like
A pause.
“Just arrived.””
