Chapter 7: The Truth Standing at My Door

Nobody moved.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes the mind needs a few seconds to accept what the heart already knows.

Someone was coming.

Someone connected to everything.

Someone who knew about Daniel’s discovery.

Someone who helped my father.

The front door remained open behind us.

The same doorway Robert used to throw me out.

Now it felt like a doorway hiding another secret.

Vanessa whispered:

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

And I knew.

He was waiting for me to be ready.

I wasn’t.

But I nodded anyway.

“Bring them here.””

Robert’s face changed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

The reaction came too fast.

Too emotional.

Too revealing.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You know who it is.””

Robert looked away.

“I said no.””

Marcus stepped toward the doorway.

“You no longer get to decide that.””

The sound of footsteps came from inside the house.

Slow.

Careful.

My heart started pounding.

I hated that part of me still hoped.

Hoped maybe this was some misunderstanding.

Hoped maybe Robert had an explanation.

But then the person appeared.

And every hope disappeared.

Because I knew that face.

I had hugged that person.

I had trusted that person.

I had invited that person into my home.

“Mom?””

The word came out before I could stop it.

My mother.

Elaine Gallagher.

She stood in the doorway holding a small handbag.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Robert looked at her.

“You weren’t supposed to come.””

My mother looked at him.

“I know.””

That sentence destroyed something inside me.

Because it meant she knew.

She knew this was happening.

She knew I was being pushed out.

She knew.

I stepped backward.

My chest hurt.

“Mom…”

She looked at me.

“Nia, I can explain.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, you can’t.””

She started crying.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“When I was sleeping outside?””

“Nia—”

“When I was sitting on this porch pregnant and alone?””

My mother covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words.

Those simple words.

They felt too small.

Too late.

Robert stepped forward.

“Don’t make this dramatic.””

I looked at him.

I couldn’t believe him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His face hardened.

“I am still your father.””

“No.””

The word came out stronger than I expected.

“You are the man who abandoned his daughter when she needed him.””

Silence.

My mother cried quietly.

Vanessa watched all of us.

Confused.

Because she thought she understood this family.

She didn’t.

Nobody did.

Marcus looked at my mother.

“Elaine, are you willing to confirm your statement?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Robert immediately turned.

“Elaine.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw my mother stand up to him.

“I should have stopped you.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“Don’t do this.””

“I should have protected her.””

“Elaine.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

But she continued.

“I watched you convince yourself that you were doing the right thing.””

She looked at me.

“But you weren’t.””

My eyes filled.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

But because for the first time in weeks, someone admitted I had been hurt.

Marcus opened his folder.

“Mrs. Gallagher, please tell us what happened.””

My mother looked at Robert.

Then at me.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel came to me two months before he died.””

I held my breath.

“He knew something was wrong.””

Robert looked furious.

“What did he tell you?””

My mother ignored him.

“He told me he had found proof that someone was trying to take control of the property.””

Marcus nodded.

“And?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“He asked me to protect Nia if anything happened to him.””

My heart broke.

Daniel knew.

He knew there was danger.

And he still tried to protect me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.

My mother looked down.

“Because Robert threatened to take everything away.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said if I went against him, he would leave me with nothing.””

Robert laughed.

“You’re lying.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“No.””

He pulled out another document.

“She isn’t.””

Robert went silent.

Marcus continued.

“Because Daniel recorded your conversation.””

My father’s face went pale.

Vanessa whispered:

“Recorded?””

Marcus nodded.

“A backup file was delivered to me this morning.””

My breathing stopped.

A recording.

Proof.

The truth was no longer hidden.

But Marcus wasn’t finished.

He looked at me.

“Nia, there’s something Daniel wanted you to hear.””

My entire body froze.

A message.

From Daniel.

My husband.

The last words he left behind.

Marcus reached into the folder.

But before he could open it—

May you like

Robert stepped forward and shouted:

“No one is listening to that.””
