Chapter 12 - The Day I Stopped Being AfraidThe trial lasted months.

Marcus was convicted.

Daniel cooperated with prosecutors.

Evelyn accepted responsibility.

Victor's network was dismantled.

And Michael's estate was placed into the trust he had created for me.

But none of it felt like victory.

Because revenge doesn't heal you.

It only tells you the enemy lost.

Healing tells you that you no longer care whether they did.

I returned to therapy.

Not physical therapy this time.

Emotional therapy.

I learned that trauma doesn't disappear because a courtroom announces a verdict.

Sometimes you still wake up remembering the crash.

Sometimes you still hear a glass breaking and your heart races.

Sometimes you still remember the humiliation.

But eventually…

The memories stop controlling you.

One afternoon, I returned to the ballroom.

Alone.

No father.

No lawyers.

No security.

I stood in the center.

Exactly where Daniel had poured the wine over me.

I closed my eyes.

I remembered sitting there.

Feeling everyone staring.

Feeling powerless.

Then I remembered standing.

My first step.

My second.

My father's hand on my shoulder.

And I smiled.

Because that woman had survived.

My father entered.

“You came here alone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked around.

“To say goodbye.”

He understood.

I removed my shoes.

Then I walked across the marble floor barefoot.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Every step was mine.

Nobody was forcing me.

Nobody was watching.

Nobody was judging.

For the first time…

May you like

I wasn't walking to prove something.

I was walking because I could.
