Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be DeadVictor Grant was not dead.

That was the first thing we discovered.

The second thing was worse.

He had been secretly controlling Daniel's company.

Not officially.

Through shell corporations.

Hidden accounts.

Anonymous investments.

My father studied the documents.

“He was using Daniel.”

I shook my head.

“Then why?”

Arthur looked at me.

“Because Daniel was useful.”

That word hurt.

Useful.

Not loved.

Not respected.

Useful.

We found Victor living under another name in a neighboring state.

The police located him within days.

When he was brought in for questioning, he smiled.

“You're Emily Hayes.”

I stared at him.

“You know me?”

“I know everything about you.”

That sentence chilled me.

“How?”

He leaned back.

“Because your family has been on my radar for years.”

Victor revealed the truth.

The original target wasn't Daniel.

It was my father.

Years earlier, Arthur had helped expose a major financial crime involving Victor.

Victor lost millions.

He blamed my family.

But revenge wasn't enough.

He wanted something that would hurt Arthur personally.

His daughter.

Me.

Daniel was simply the perfect doorway.

Victor had approached Evelyn.

He convinced her that I was trying to take Daniel away from the family.

He promised her that if Daniel divorced me, he would become independent.

Rich.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

Evelyn believed him.

Then Victor discovered my family trust.

That changed everything.

Instead of simply destroying my marriage…

He decided to steal my wealth.

Daniel became part of the plan.

At first, he didn't know everything.

But eventually…

He did.

And he chose money.

That was the part I couldn't forgive.

Victor also revealed something else.

The accident was never supposed to leave me permanently injured.

The driver had been instructed to frighten me.

To make me believe I was unsafe.

To push me into selling my shares.

But the crash became more serious than expected.

Victor panicked.

Evelyn panicked.

Daniel stayed silent.

And I nearly died.

When Daniel heard this…

He broke down.

“I didn't know it would happen like that.”

I looked at him.

“But you knew enough.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

That was all I needed.

Victor was arrested.

The financial network collapsed.

My company was placed under independent control.

My father helped me rebuild.

But I didn't want the old life anymore.

I didn't want revenge.

I wanted freedom.

One morning, I returned to physical therapy.

My therapist watched me walk across the room.

Three months earlier, I could barely stand.

Now I could walk across the entire gym with a cane.

She smiled.

“That's progress.”

I looked at myself in the mirror.

“I thought I would never walk again.”

She shook her head.

“You never stopped.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because she was right.

I had never stopped.

Not when my body was injured.

Not when my marriage collapsed.

Not when my family betrayed me.

I kept moving.

Then my father arrived.

He had something in his hand.

A small envelope.

“What is it?”

“Your mother's.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

Arthur nodded.

“She asked me to give this to you if you ever discovered the truth about Daniel.”

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother's handwriting.

“My daughter…”

I started crying before I finished the first line.

She wrote that she had known something was wrong years earlier.

She had suspected people were targeting our family.

She had created a second trust.

One that even my father didn't know about.

And the beneficiary was…

Me.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

“If they ever try to convince you that you are powerless…”

I read it twice.

May you like

Then continued.

“Remember where you come from.”
