Chapter 8 - The Husband Who Thought I Still Needed HimDaniel returned quietly.

No cameras.
No lawyers.
No dramatic entrance.
He simply walked into a private restaurant and sat across from Marcus.
My investigator recorded everything.
I watched the footage from a secure room.
Daniel looked different.
Older.
His hair was shorter.
His face thinner.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
Marcus placed a folder on the table.
“You're sure this will work?”
Daniel smiled.
“She still trusts you.”
Marcus nodded.
“She trusts almost nobody anymore.”
“That's why she'll trust you.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Daniel continued:
“She thinks I betrayed her.”
Marcus laughed.
“You did.”
Daniel smiled.
“And that's exactly why she won't expect me to come back.”
Their plan was simple.
Marcus had slowly gained influence inside my company.
He controlled several major accounts.
He had access to internal financial records.
He planned to transfer a large portion of the company into shell corporations.
Then Daniel would return with evidence claiming I was financially unstable.
They would argue that my company needed outside management.
And Marcus would step in.
But there was one detail they didn't know.
I had already changed the corporate structure months earlier.
Marcus had access to old information.
Not current information.
The accounts he planned to empty…
Were already protected.
The shares he planned to seize…
Were already locked.
The contracts he intended to manipulate…
Required my approval.
He had been preparing to steal a kingdom that no longer existed in the form he expected.
But there was something else.
The investigation revealed Marcus had been paying Daniel for years.
Not just recently.
Years.
That meant Daniel had been planning his return long before anyone knew.
I wondered how long.
Then I found the answer.
The first payment had been made six months after our divorce.
Six months after he publicly apologized.
Six months after he claimed he wanted to move on.
He had never moved on.
He had simply waited.
I decided to meet Daniel.
My father objected.
“No.”
“I need to.”
“You don't owe him anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because I want him to tell me why.”
My father studied me.
“You already know.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I know what he did.”
“But I don't know why.”
We met in the same hotel where he had first proposed to me.
That was deliberate.
He arrived first.
When he saw me walking toward the table, his expression changed.
He stood.
“You're walking.”
I almost laughed.
“That's what you noticed?”
He looked embarrassed.
“I didn't mean—”
“You did.”
He sat down.
I remained standing.
“I won't stay long.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
“Why are you back?”
He looked at me.
“Because I made mistakes.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Don't call them mistakes.”
He looked down.
“I betrayed you.”
“Yes.”
“I hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“I chose money over you.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Then what do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
He was silent for a long time.
Then he finally spoke.
“I hated feeling like I wasn't enough.”
I said nothing.
“You had the money.”
“You had the family.”
“You had the reputation.”
“You were stronger than me.”
He laughed bitterly.
“And everyone thought I was the successful one.”
I stared at him.
“So you destroyed me because you were insecure?”
“No.”
His eyes filled with anger.
“I destroyed you because every time I looked at you, I saw everything I wasn't.”
That was the first honest thing he had said.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
“Did you order the accident?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
“Did you know it was going to happen?”
A long silence.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“You knew?”
“I knew there would be a confrontation.”
“You knew someone was going to force me off the road.”
“I didn't know you would be injured that badly.”
I stared at him.
“You knew.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
I stepped backward.
For years, I had wondered whether I had imagined the betrayal.
I hadn't.
Then Daniel whispered:
“But I wasn't the one who ordered it.”
I turned.
“Who was?”
He looked terrified.
“You don't want to know.”
I walked toward the door.
“Try me.”
He finally said the name.
And my entire world stopped.
“Your father.”
I turned around.
“What?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not Arthur.”
A pause.
“Your biological father.”
I stared at him.
“My father is Arthur.”
Daniel's expression changed.
“No.”
“You've never met him.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.”
“I have.”
May you like
And suddenly…
A secret I never knew existed was about to destroy everything I believed about my family.
