Chapter 2: The Waiter Asked One Question Too Many
Nia didn't lower her phone.
"What do you mean, one more thing?""
The waiter shifted the tablet into both hands.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. I need to confirm the payment arrangement before the restaurant processes anything.""
Daniel pushed his chair backward.
"That's enough. I'll handle it.""
The waiter remained professional.
"Sir, the reservation identifies Mrs. Carter as the guarantor. I need her confirmation.""
"I said I'll handle it.""
"And I said I didn't authorize it," Nia replied.
Daniel looked at her sharply.
"Can you stop making this worse?""
Nia gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"You made a reservation under my name, attached my card, and put a bill in front of me. Tell me which part I made worse.""
Nobody touched their food.
At the center of the table, Denise folded her napkin with painstaking care.
"Nia, darling, there's no reason to speak to Daniel like he's a criminal.""
Nia turned toward her mother-in-law.
"Then perhaps he should stop behaving like someone who expects to get away with something.""
Denise's lips parted.
"How dare you?""
"How dare I question a charge I didn't approve?""
"Daniel is your husband!""
"And that makes my money his whenever he wants?""
Denise glanced around the table as though searching for someone who would help her restore order.
Marcus finally put down his knife.
"Look, Nia, let's all calm down. It's probably a misunderstanding.""
She faced him.
"What exactly is the misunderstanding?""
Marcus rubbed his chin.
"Maybe Daniel thought you agreed.""
"When?""
He paused.
"At some point.""
"Which point, Marcus?""
His eyes moved toward his brother.
Daniel answered for him.
"We talked about having everyone together.""
"Yes. We talked about dinner. We did not talk about a $9,800 authorization.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"You know how expensive this family is to bring together. Everybody has work. Everybody has children. I wanted to do something special.""
"Then you should have paid for it.""
"I thought we were partners.""
"We are partners. That doesn't mean you get to make financial decisions for me without my permission.""
Tasha shifted in her chair.
"Honestly, I don't understand why you're acting like this. You make good money.""
Nia stared at her.
"How much money do you think I make?""
Tasha blinked.
"I don't know the exact amount.""
"Then how do you know what I can afford?""
Tasha looked down at her plate.
Nobody answered.
Nia turned back to the waiter.
"Please don't process that authorization. I haven't approved it.""
"Of course, ma'am.""
"Can you show me the reservation details?""
The waiter glanced at Daniel.
Nia noticed.
So did Daniel.
"There's nothing else you need to see," he said.
The waiter kept his voice measured.
"Sir, I'm assisting the person listed on the reservation.""
Nia extended her hand.
"Please.""
After a brief pause, the waiter placed the tablet where she could read it.
The reservation showed the guest count, the estimated minimum spend, and the payment guarantee. The authorization was marked as pending verification.
There was no completed charge displayed on the screen.
Nia felt a fraction of relief, but it didn't last.
She read the reservation date.
Then the booking date.
Then the payment guarantee.
Daniel had arranged the dinner three days earlier, the same day her banking app said her card had been added.
She looked at him.
"You planned this three days ago.""
He crossed his arms.
"I planned a dinner.""
"You planned a dinner and attached my card.""
"Because you're my wife.""
"That's not authorization.""
Daniel leaned closer, lowering his voice enough that the people at the far end might not hear.
"Do you have any idea what you're doing to me right now?""
Nia didn't move.
"I'm asking you a question.""
"You're humiliating me.""
"You humiliated yourself when you assumed I would pay for something I never agreed to.""
He glanced toward his mother.
Denise immediately stepped in.
"Daniel works hard. He wanted to give his family one beautiful evening. Is that so terrible?""
Nia looked at the half-empty wine bottles.
"Then why didn't he tell the family he was paying?""
Denise froze.
Nia continued.
"Why did he let Marcus joke about me treating everyone? Why did Tasha thank me for my generosity? Why did nobody mention that I had supposedly agreed to this?""
Tasha opened her mouth, then closed it.
Marcus shifted uncomfortably.
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Because I knew you'd turn it into a whole production.""
The sentence cut through the room.
Nia slowly lowered her phone to the table.
There it was.
Not an apology.
Not confusion.
Not even a convincing excuse.
He had expected her to object, and he had planned around that expectation by making the announcement in front of his family, where refusing him would make her appear selfish.
He hadn't simply assumed she would pay.
He had created a room full of witnesses to pressure her into paying.
Nia felt the anger settle into something colder.
"Daniel, did you tell them I agreed to cover dinner?""
He stared at her.
"Answer me.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"I told them not to worry about the bill.""
"Because you were paying?""
"I didn't say that.""
"Because I was paying?""
He looked away.
Nia nodded once.
"Thank you.""
Daniel frowned.
"For what?""
"For finally making this clear.""
She turned to the waiter.
"Please note that I dispute the authorization. I would also like the reservation details and any payment records associated with my name.""
The waiter nodded.
"I can ask the manager to assist you with that.""
"Please do.""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"You're not going to turn this into a formal complaint.""
Nia looked up at him.
"Sit down.""
He stared at her, visibly stunned.
For years, Daniel had been the one who decided when conversations ended. He had walked away from arguments, changed subjects, or declared that everyone needed to move on.
This time, Nia didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
Daniel slowly sat.
The waiter stepped away to contact the manager.
Denise leaned toward Nia.
"Whatever problems you and Daniel have, they should stay between the two of you.""
Nia's expression remained steady.
"Then why did he bring twenty-two people into it?""
Denise looked as though she'd been slapped.
At the opposite end of the table, one of Daniel's younger cousins quietly pushed his untouched wineglass away.
"I thought Daniel was hosting," he said.
Everyone turned toward him.
Daniel snapped, "Nobody asked you.""
The cousin lifted both hands.
"I'm just saying what I thought.""
"And I'm telling you to stay out of it.""
Nia watched the exchange.
For the first time, she understood that the family had not necessarily been told the same story. Some had assumed Daniel was paying. Others had assumed she was. And at least a few appeared to have accepted the invitation without asking who was responsible for the bill.
That didn't excuse what Daniel had done.
But it explained why he had been so confident.
He had counted on the confusion.
He had counted on her embarrassment.
He had counted on everyone wanting the evening to continue more than they wanted the truth.
Nia opened her banking app again and took a screenshot of the notification.
She saved it.
Then she photographed the reservation details on the tablet, making sure the restaurant's name and authorization status were visible.
Daniel watched her.
"What are you doing?""
"Keeping a record.""
"Of your own husband?""
"Of a financial authorization I didn't make.""
He leaned forward.
"Put the phone away.""
"No.""
His nostrils flared.
"You don't trust me?""
Nia looked at the man she had married.
"I trusted you three days ago.""
His face changed.
For a brief moment, something like fear replaced his anger.
Then the restaurant manager arrived, a neatly dressed Black woman carrying a folder and wearing a concerned expression.
"Mrs. Carter?"" she asked.
"I'm the manager. My colleague tells me there's a question about the payment guarantee.""
"Yes," Nia replied.
"I never authorized it.""
The manager nodded and opened her folder.
"I understand. Before we proceed, I need to review the original booking information.""
Daniel rose halfway from his chair.
"There's no need for all that. I'll pay.""
The manager turned to him.
"Certainly, sir. We can discuss your payment options separately.""
She looked back at Nia.
"But I need to clarify one detail first.""
Nia waited.
The manager glanced down at the paperwork.
"Your husband isn't listed as the person who submitted the reservation.""
Daniel went completely still.
Nia's fingers tightened around her phone.
"Who is?""
May you like
The manager turned the folder around.
And when Nia saw the name recorded beside the original booking, she realized the evening had begun with a lie long before the check folder ever touched the table.
