Chapter 6: The Account She Had Never Seen

Nia didn't start the car.

She remained in the driver's seat, the photograph glowing on her phone while the restaurant's lights reflected across the windshield.

The transfer record was incomplete. Tasha had photographed only part of the document, and the visible information wasn't enough to establish why the money had moved or what it had been used for.

But one detail stood out.

The destination account appeared to be associated with Daniel.

Nia took a screenshot of the photograph and saved the original message.

Then she called Tasha.

Her sister-in-law answered after the fourth ring.

"Nia?""

"Where did you get that document?""

Tasha lowered her voice.

"I'm at home.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"I took the picture from Denise's kitchen counter earlier. Marcus had some papers with him when he came over.""

"Why were my account details on those papers?""

"I don't know.""

"Tasha, I need you to tell me exactly what you saw.""

There was a pause.

"I saw Marcus and Daniel talking about money. Marcus had a folder. Daniel told him to put it away because people were coming into the kitchen.""

"Did you see my name?""

"Not then. I saw it tonight when I looked at the photograph again.""

Nia gripped the steering wheel.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

Tasha sighed.

"Because I didn't want to get involved in your marriage.""

Nia looked through the windshield at the restaurant entrance.

"Your brother-in-law involved you when he told the family I was paying for dinner.""

"I know.""

"And he involved me when he put my card on a reservation without asking.""

"I know, Nia. I'm sorry.""

The apology sounded genuine, but it didn't erase the hours of silence that had come before it.

Nia took a breath.

"Do you know why he opened that account?""

"No.""

"Do you know where the money went?""

"No. I only saw the page you saw.""

"Then please don't guess. If you have the original document, keep it safe. Don't change it, don't write on it, and don't send it to anyone else.""

"Okay.""

"And if Marcus asks about the photograph, don't get into an argument with him. I need the facts, not another family fight.""

Tasha was silent for a moment.

"You sound different tonight.""

Nia almost smiled, but there was no humor in it.

"Tonight, I found out my husband expected me to pay almost ten thousand dollars for a dinner I never agreed to.""

"I know.""

"Then I discovered a financial notification I couldn't explain.""

"I know.""

"And now I'm looking at a transfer from our household account to an account I don't recognize.""

Tasha exhaled.

"You're right. I'm sorry.""

Nia looked down at her phone.

"Thank you for telling me what you know.""

She ended the call.

For several minutes, she sat quietly.

She wanted to call Daniel and demand an explanation. She wanted to ask him how many conversations he had held about her money without including her in them.

But she knew how those conversations usually ended.

He would offer a partial explanation. She would ask a follow-up question. He would accuse her of mistrusting him. Eventually, she would find herself defending her tone instead of discussing the original issue.

Not tonight.

Nia opened her banking app and reviewed the account history again.

She made a list of the transactions she didn't recognize, recording the dates and amounts exactly as they appeared. She didn't label them theft. She didn't assume every unfamiliar transfer was improper.

She simply marked them for review.

Then she called the number on the back of her bank card.

A representative answered after a brief automated menu.

"Thank you for calling. How may I assist you?""

"My name is Nia Carter. I need to report an unauthorized card setup and review some unfamiliar transactions on a joint account.""

"I'm sorry to hear that, Ms. Carter. I can help you with the next steps. First, can you confirm which account you're calling about?""

Nia answered the verification questions.

The representative asked her to describe the card notification.

Nia read it aloud.

"Thank you," the representative said.

"I'll document your concern. We may need to review the account activity and verify certain changes before we can determine what happened.""

"Can you tell me who made the change?""

"I can't confirm that from the notification alone. I'll check what information is available and explain what we can investigate.""

Nia appreciated the answer.

No guesses. No promises. Just a process.

The representative reviewed the card controls with her, confirmed that the personal card was locked, and explained how to request a replacement if Nia chose to do so.

Then they moved to the household account.

"I see the transfers you've mentioned," the representative said.

"Some details may require a separate review. I can explain the information currently visible, but I can't determine the purpose of a transfer from its description alone.""

"Understood. What should I do next?""

"I recommend documenting the transactions you don't recognize and submitting a formal inquiry. If you believe someone has accessed your banking information without your permission, we can also discuss additional security measures.""

Nia took notes.

When the call ended, she had a reference number, instructions for submitting her concerns, and a clear understanding of what the bank could and couldn't confirm at that stage.

She still didn't know why Daniel had added her card.

She still didn't know why money had been transferred to the other account.

But she had stopped relying on his explanation as the only source of information.

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

Nia watched the screen until the call stopped.

A message arrived seconds later.

*Where are you? We need to talk.*

She didn't reply.

Another message appeared.

*You can't just disappear every time we have a disagreement.*

Nia looked at the word disagreement.

She typed a response, deleted it, then tried again.

*I'm safe. I need space tonight. Please don't come looking for me. I'll contact you when I'm ready to talk.*

She sent it.

Daniel called immediately.

She declined the call.

His next message arrived almost at once.

*You're blowing this out of proportion.*

Nia put the phone face down.

Outside, a couple crossed the parking area, laughing softly as they walked toward their car. A valet carried keys beneath the bright entrance lights.

The ordinary sounds of the evening seemed strangely distant.

Nia had married Daniel because she believed they could face difficult things together.

She had never expected marriage to protect her from every mistake. She had expected honesty when mistakes happened.

Instead, he had tried to make her responsible for a decision she hadn't made, then treated her questions as an attack.

She opened her notes and reviewed the list she had created.

There were three unfamiliar transactions she wanted the bank to examine. There was the disputed card authorization. There was the restaurant reservation.

And there was Tasha's photograph.

Nia saved everything in a folder.

Then she called her older cousin, Simone, who lived nearby.

Simone answered with a cheerful, "Girl, what's going on?""

Nia tried to speak, but the words caught in her throat.

Simone's voice changed immediately.

"Nia? What happened?""

"My marriage is in trouble.""

There was a brief silence.

"Are you safe?""

"Yes.""

"Do you need me to come get you?""

Nia looked at the car's locked doors.

"No. I just need somewhere quiet to stay tonight.""

"Come over. I'll put the kettle on.""

Nia felt her shoulders relax for the first time all evening.

"Thank you.""

"And Nia?""

"Yes?""

"Whatever happened, you don't have to solve the whole thing tonight.""

Nia closed her eyes.

Those words almost broke her.

Not because they were dramatic, but because nobody had asked her to be quiet, forgiving, or reasonable before offering help.

"I'll be there soon," she said.

She ended the call and started the car.

Before leaving the parking area, she checked her phone one final time.

Daniel had sent another message.

*You need to understand that I was trying to protect our family.*

Nia read it carefully.

Then she placed the phone in the passenger seat and drove away.

She didn't know what Daniel meant by protecting their family.

She didn't know whether the transfers were connected to the restaurant reservation.

And she refused to assume the answer simply because she was frightened.

At Simone's house, the porch light was already on.

Her cousin opened the door before Nia reached the steps, wrapped her in a hug, and took her handbag.

"Come inside," Simone said.

"You look exhausted.""

Nia stepped into the warm kitchen and sat at the table while Simone made tea.

For a few minutes, neither of them spoke.

Then Nia placed her phone on the table.

"I need to show you something.""

She opened the photograph Tasha had sent and slid the screen across the table.

Simone studied it.

"Is that Daniel's account?""

"That's what it appears to be.""

"And the money came from your household account?""

"That's what the visible record suggests. The bank is reviewing it.""

Simone returned the phone.

"Have you asked him about it?""

"Yes. He won't give me a clear answer.""

"Then wait until you have the records.""

Nia nodded.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the notification came from the bank.

*YOUR REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL ACCOUNT SECURITY HAS BEEN RECEIVED.*

Beneath it was a second notification.

*A RECENT ACCOUNT CHANGE REQUIRES VERIFICATION.*

Nia frowned.

She opened the message.

It didn't identify the change or explain whether it was related to the card, the household account, or another setting.

She took a screenshot and added it to her records.

Simone leaned forward.

"What is it?""

"I'm not sure yet.""

"Does it tell you what changed?""

"No.""

"Then don't let your mind fill in the blanks.""

Nia nodded slowly.

She was learning to distinguish what she knew from what she feared.

She knew the restaurant authorization hadn't been approved by her.

She knew her card had been added to an account three days earlier using a device identified as Daniel's phone.

She knew the household account contained transfers she needed to review.

And she knew Daniel had avoided giving her a clear explanation.

Everything else remained unanswered.

Her phone rang once more.

Daniel.

This time, Nia answered.

"Hello.""

His voice came through immediately.

"Where are you?""

"I told you I'm safe.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"And I told you I need space.""

He exhaled sharply.

"Nia, I want to fix this.""

"Then tell me what happened.""

"I've already explained.""

"No. You've told me you were arranging a dinner. You haven't explained the card authorization or the transfers.""

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "The money wasn't for what you think.""

Nia's fingers tightened around the phone.

"What was it for?""

"I can't explain everything over the phone.""

"Then give me one clear fact.""

He hesitated.

"Marcus knows about the account.""

Nia looked at Simone.

Her cousin's expression changed.

"Why does Marcus know about an account that contains money from our household account?"" Nia asked.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Because he helped me set it up.""

Nia sat perfectly still.

There it was: the first direct admission connecting Marcus to the unfamiliar account.

She forced herself not to leap beyond it.

"Why did you need his help?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded strained.

"Because I needed somewhere to put the money before you found out what I was planning.""

Nia's heart began to pound.

"What were you planning, Daniel?""

A long silence followed.

Then he said, "I was going to tell you after the dinner.""

Nia stared at the phone.

"Tell me what?""

Daniel drew a shaky breath.

And just as he began to answer, another call appeared on Nia's screen.

The bank's fraud-review department.

She looked at Daniel's name, then at the incoming call.

For the first time that night, she understood that she didn't have to choose between hearing her husband's explanation and protecting her own interests.

She could do both.

"Daniel," she said, "I'm going to take this call. We'll speak when I have the information I need.""

"Nia, wait—"

She ended the call.

Then she answered the bank.

"Hello. This is Nia Carter.""

The representative introduced herself and confirmed the reference number from Nia's earlier inquiry.

"We've reviewed the initial details you submitted," she said.

"Before I discuss the next steps, I need to ask you about a recent change to the joint account.""

Nia straightened in her chair.

"What change?""

The representative paused.

"There's a new account-access arrangement that requires verification. According to the information currently available, the change was initiated recently.""

Nia's mouth went dry.

"Can you tell me who initiated it?""

"We'll need to complete a few verification steps before I can confirm what the records show.""

Nia reached for her notebook.

"Okay. What do you need from me?""

As the representative began explaining the process, Nia wrote down every instruction.

She wasn't going to guess.

She wasn't going to panic.

And she wasn't going to let Daniel's version of events become the only version she heard.

But when the representative mentioned the date of the account change, Nia stopped writing.

May you like

It was the same date as the restaurant reservation.

And the same date Daniel had said he needed somewhere to put the money before she found out what he was planning.
