Chapter 4: The Notification He Was Afraid to See

Nia stood beside the restaurant doorway, her phone glowing in her palm.

*YOUR CARD SECURITY SETTINGS HAVE BEEN UPDATED.*

She read the notification again, then opened her banking app.

Behind her, chairs scraped against the floor. The relatives were beginning to gather their belongings, but Daniel remained beside the long table, watching her with an expression she had never seen on his face before.

Fear.

Not the embarrassment of being caught in an argument. Not the irritation of a man whose evening had gone wrong.

Real fear.

Nia turned toward him.

"Daniel, did you change my card security settings?""

He started walking toward her.

"Give me your phone.""

She pulled it closer to her chest.

"Why?""

"Because you're looking at something you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

"Nia, not here.""

"That's what you said about the bill. That's what you said about the reservation. You keep asking me to wait until we're somewhere private, but you haven't answered a single question.""

Daniel glanced toward his mother.

Denise was standing beside her chair, clutching a small handbag beneath one arm. Marcus had his wallet out, helping another relative calculate their share of the restaurant bill.

Nobody came to Daniel's rescue.

He lowered his voice.

"Your bank sends all kinds of notifications. It could be automatic.""

Nia looked at the screen.

"Then why do you look terrified?""

His jaw tightened.

"I'm not terrified.""

"Look at me and say that again.""

Daniel met her eyes, but only for a second.

Nia opened the security settings.

The application requested her fingerprint. She pressed her thumb against the sensor and waited.

A page appeared showing her card controls, recent security changes, and options to freeze the card or request a replacement.

She scrolled carefully.

The notification didn't identify who had changed the settings. It only confirmed that a change had occurred.

She wasn't going to assume more than the screen told her.

But she wasn't going to ignore it, either.

Nia tapped the option to temporarily lock her card.

A confirmation appeared.

Her card was now locked against new transactions while she reviewed the situation.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What did you just do?""

"Protected my account.""

"You can't just lock everything because you're angry.""

"This isn't about anger.""

"You're making a financial decision in the middle of a restaurant.""

Nia almost laughed.

"You made a financial decision for me three days ago. Apparently, you thought that was perfectly acceptable.""

His mouth tightened.

"I was trying to organize something for my family.""

"Then organize it with your own money.""

Daniel glanced toward the exit.

"Can we please go home?""

"Why? So you can tell me I'm overreacting without an audience?""

"Because this is private!""

"You made it public when you put the bill in front of me.""

His voice rose.

"I didn't know you would act like this.""

Nia stared at him.

"That's the problem, Daniel. You didn't know because you never asked.""

For a moment, neither spoke.

The restaurant remained bright and busy around them. Beyond the glass doors, headlights passed along the street. Inside, a server collected empty plates from a nearby table, while the manager stood discreetly at the reception desk.

Nothing about the room had changed.

Yet Nia felt as though she were seeing her marriage under a different light.

She remembered how Daniel used to ask her opinion before making major purchases. She remembered the first apartment they had rented together, when they had divided every expense with a spreadsheet and celebrated when they finally paid off their furniture.

Back then, he had told her that trust meant never making the other person guess.

Now he stood before her, asking her to trust him while refusing to explain what he had done.

Nia returned to the banking app and reviewed the available security options.

She decided she would contact the bank directly and ask for the relevant transaction and account records. She would also ask how the card had been added and what the security notification referred to.

She didn't need to solve everything in the restaurant.

She needed to stop pretending the questions could wait forever.

Daniel reached for her elbow.

"Let's go.""

She stepped away before he could touch her.

"Don't.""

His hand dropped.

The simple movement seemed to shock him more than her words.

"Nia, I'm your husband.""

"And I'm the person whose card is on that reservation.""

He looked over his shoulder.

Denise approached them, her heels clicking against the polished floor.

"Sweetheart, I think we all need to take a breath.""

Nia didn't turn away from Daniel.

"I've been breathing all evening.""

Denise placed a hand on her son's arm.

"Daniel, tell her what happened.""

He looked at his mother.

"I've been trying.""

"No," Nia said.

"You've been telling me to stop asking.""

Denise's expression hardened.

"Marriage requires forgiveness.""

"Forgiveness for what?""

The older woman fell silent.

Nia continued, her voice steady.

"You can't ask me to forgive something you refuse to explain.""

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

"Fine. I changed something on the account while I was handling the reservation.""

Nia went completely still.

"What did you change?""

"I don't remember every detail.""

"You remember enough to admit you changed something.""

"I was trying to make the payment process easier.""

"By adding my card without asking?""

He looked toward his mother again.

Denise squeezed his arm.

"Daniel, be careful what you say.""

Nia caught the words.

She turned toward Denise.

"Why are you telling him to be careful?""

"I'm telling him not to say something he might regret.""

"Or are you worried he'll tell me something you already know?""

Denise released her son's arm.

"That's an outrageous accusation.""

"Then answer a simple question. Did you know he was using my card?""

"I knew Daniel was arranging the dinner.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Denise pressed her lips together.

Behind her, Marcus approached with a printed receipt.

"Nia, I've paid for our portion," he said.

"I'm sorry about what happened.""

She nodded.

"Thank you.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Brother, you need to sort this out.""

Daniel's face darkened.

"Stay out of my marriage.""

"You brought the entire family into it.""

Marcus's voice was tired rather than angry.

"You asked me to book the room. You said everything was handled. I didn't know you were going to put Nia in this position.""

Daniel stepped toward him.

"Are you accusing me of something?""

"I'm telling you what happened.""

"Then stop talking.""

Marcus shook his head and returned to his wife.

Nia watched him leave.

The family's earlier confidence had dissolved into uncomfortable glances and unfinished conversations. Some relatives were still paying their portions. Others had quietly gathered their coats.

Nobody was celebrating anymore.

Nia looked back at Daniel.

"I want you to understand something. I'm not deciding tonight whether our marriage can survive this. I'm deciding tonight that my money is not available for you to use without my permission.""

He stared at her.

"So you're threatening to leave me over a restaurant bill?""

"No. I'm refusing to let you change the subject.""

She slipped her phone into her handbag.

Then she walked toward the exit.

This time, Daniel didn't grab her arm or block her path.

He followed several steps behind, calling her name as she crossed the brightly lit lobby.

"Nia, wait.""

She kept walking.

"Please. Just give me five minutes.""

She stopped near the glass doors and looked back.

"Five minutes for what?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Nia waited.

Finally, she nodded as though his silence had answered the question.

She pushed through the doors and stepped into the cool night air.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, it wasn't a bank notification.

It was a message from an unfamiliar number.

*Nia, you need to check the shared account before Daniel gets home.*

A second message appeared immediately afterward.

*I'm sorry. I should have told you earlier.*

Nia stared at the screen.

Then a name appeared beneath the number.

*Tasha Carter.*

May you like

Daniel's sister-in-law had just sent her a message that suggested the restaurant bill might not be the only thing Nia needed to investigate.

And whatever Tasha knew, she had waited until Nia was outside to say it.
