Chapter 3: The Name on the Reservation
For several seconds, Nia couldn't make sense of the page.
The manager had turned the reservation sheet toward her, one finger resting beside the booking information.
The name printed there was not Daniel Carter.
It was *Marcus Carter*.
Nia looked across the table at her husband's older brother.
Marcus's face lost its color.
"What?"" he demanded.
Nia didn't answer him. She looked at the manager.
"You're saying Marcus made the reservation?""
"The booking record lists Mr. Marcus Carter as the person who submitted it," the manager explained.
"The payment guarantee is recorded separately under your name.""
Marcus pushed his chair back.
"That can't be right.""
The manager remained calm.
"Would you like me to show you the booking confirmation?""
"Yes," Nia said.
"No," Daniel said at the same time.
Every head turned toward him.
The manager paused.
Nia looked at her husband.
"Why shouldn't I see it?""
Daniel straightened his jacket.
"Because this is a family matter, and we're standing in the middle of a restaurant.""
"You didn't seem concerned about privacy when you slammed the check in front of everyone.""
"That was different.""
"How?""
He opened his mouth, but Marcus interrupted.
"I booked the dinner because Daniel asked me to help coordinate it. That's all.""
Nia turned toward Marcus.
"Did you enter my payment information?""
"No.""
"Did you ask Daniel to enter it?""
Marcus hesitated.
"I didn't handle the payment.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Marcus glanced at his brother.
Daniel's expression had become frighteningly blank.
"Marcus," Nia said, "look at me. Did you know my card was being used as the payment guarantee?""
Marcus swallowed.
"I knew Daniel said the dinner was covered.""
"Covered by whom?""
"I assumed—"
"You assumed I was paying?""
He shifted in his seat.
"I assumed you and Daniel had worked it out.""
Nia let out a slow breath.
"Nobody worked anything out with me.""
Denise stood, smoothing the front of her burgundy gown.
"This is getting ridiculous. We came here to celebrate family, not conduct an interrogation.""
Nia glanced at the untouched dessert menus near Denise's plate.
"What exactly are we celebrating?""
Denise's mouth tightened.
"Your marriage.""
"Then why did your son need to surprise me with a bill?""
"Daniel wanted everyone together.""
"And he couldn't tell me about twenty-two guests before we arrived?""
Denise looked toward Daniel.
He didn't help her.
The manager gently placed a second document beside the reservation sheet.
"This is the booking confirmation. The original submission was completed online. It includes the guest count, the estimated spending requirement, and the payment guarantee.""
Nia read the page carefully.
The reservation had been made three days earlier.
The same day her phone recorded that her card had been added to an account.
The same day Daniel had kissed her goodbye before leaving for work.
She remembered that morning with painful clarity.
He had stood in their kitchen wearing a gray sweatshirt, pouring coffee into his travel mug. He had asked whether she had moved the money for their upcoming household expenses.
She had told him everything was where it needed to be.
He had smiled and said, "That's why I love you, baby. You're always on top of things.""
At the time, it had sounded like affection.
Now, the memory sat in her mind like a splinter.
Nia returned her attention to the restaurant manager.
"Has anything been charged to my card?""
"The authorization is still pending verification. We have not completed a charge against it.""
"Please make sure nothing is processed without my explicit approval.""
"Of course.""
"And I'd like a copy of these records.""
"I can provide the booking documentation and a written note of your dispute.""
"Thank you.""
Daniel's chair scraped against the floor.
"Can we stop treating this like a crime scene?""
Nia turned toward him.
"Then explain why my card is on a reservation I didn't make.""
"I already told you. I was handling the arrangements.""
"The manager just told us Marcus submitted the booking.""
"Marcus was helping me.""
Marcus threw up his hands.
"Don't put this all on me. You told me to book the room and invite the family.""
"I didn't put anything on you.""
"You told me the payment was handled!""
"And it was supposed to be!""
Nia watched the brothers stare at each other.
The argument was revealing more than either man intended.
Marcus had made the reservation. Daniel had assured him the payment was handled. Somehow, Nia's name and card had become attached to an expensive family dinner she had never approved.
But the central question remained unanswered.
How had Daniel added her card?
Nia refused to guess.
She had the notification. She had the reservation. She had a manager willing to document the dispute.
For now, those were facts.
Everything else was something she needed to establish before Daniel could turn the story into another argument about her attitude.
Tasha spoke from across the table.
"Marcus, you really didn't know Nia hadn't agreed to pay?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Daniel said everything was taken care of.""
Tasha looked at her brother-in-law.
"Then why did you tell everybody Nia was treating us?""
Daniel's face reddened.
"I was trying to make the evening special.""
"By telling people she was paying?""
"I didn't say it like that.""
Marcus gave a disbelieving laugh.
"You literally told us not to worry because Nia had it.""
Daniel pointed at him.
"Watch your mouth.""
"No, you watch yours. You asked me to organize this, and now you're acting like I did everything.""
Denise struck the table with her palm.
"Enough! Both of you!""
A spoon jumped beside a dessert plate.
The table fell silent.
Denise turned to Nia, her expression suddenly soft.
"Sweetheart, listen to me. Whatever happened, Daniel can explain it at home. There's no reason to involve the restaurant any further.""
Nia shook her head.
"The restaurant is already involved. My name is on the payment guarantee.""
"You're making this sound deliberate.""
Nia looked at her mother-in-law.
"I haven't said what happened. I'm asking questions.""
"You're treating your husband like a stranger.""
Nia's voice remained quiet.
"Right now, he's acting like someone who knows something I don't.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You're really going to do this in front of my entire family?""
Nia glanced down the table.
"Your entire family was here when you decided I would pay.""
Nobody interrupted her.
She picked up her phone and opened the notification once more.
*CARD ADDED TO ACCOUNT — 3 DAYS AGO*
*DEVICE: DANIEL'S PHONE*
She placed it beside the restaurant's paperwork.
"Daniel, I need a clear answer. Did you use your phone to add my card?""
He rubbed his jaw.
"I don't remember the exact process.""
The response made her stomach tighten.
"Do you remember adding it?""
He looked at her.
"I was arranging the dinner.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I said I don't remember.""
Nia nodded slowly.
"Okay.""
Daniel seemed surprised by her calmness.
"Okay?""
"Yes. Okay.""
She turned to the manager.
"I'd like the documentation, please.""
The manager nodded and stepped aside to prepare it.
Daniel leaned close enough that only Nia and the nearest relatives could hear him.
"You need to think about what happens when you turn your back on your husband.""
Nia looked at him for a long moment.
"Is that a warning?""
"It's a reminder that marriage isn't supposed to be about keeping score.""
"Then stop making me pay for decisions I never made.""
His eyes narrowed.
"You think you're the only one who sacrifices in this relationship?""
"No. I think I'm the only one sitting here being asked to pay nearly ten thousand dollars without having agreed to it.""
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, he had no audience willing to rescue him from the question.
The manager returned with a printed copy of the reservation details and a short incident note confirming that Nia disputed the payment guarantee.
Nia checked the documents before placing them in her handbag.
Then she opened her banking app and reviewed the card settings again.
She did not find an answer to how her card had been added. She did not know whether any other charges existed. She wasn't going to invent an explanation simply because Daniel refused to give her one.
She did know she would not approve this payment.
"Daniel," she said, "you can decide how you're going to settle the restaurant bill.""
He stared at her.
"You can't be serious.""
"I am.""
"What about my family?""
Nia looked at the twenty-two relatives sitting around the table.
"They can decide what they want to do, too.""
Marcus reached for his wallet.
"I'll cover my portion.""
Tasha immediately turned toward him.
"Marcus—"
"No," he said.
"I booked the room, but I didn't agree to put Nia's card on it. I'm paying for what we ordered.""
One cousin followed his lead.
Then another.
The movement around the table was awkward, fragmented, and quiet. Nobody knew exactly what to say, but the assumption that Nia would automatically cover everything had begun to crumble.
Denise remained seated, her arms crossed.
Daniel looked at the scattered wallets, then at Nia.
"You've made me look like a fool.""
Nia picked up her phone.
"No, Daniel. I've stopped pretending I didn't see what you did.""
She stood.
The bronze fabric of her dress caught the crisp overhead lighting as she slipped her handbag over her shoulder.
Daniel rose too.
"Where are you going?""
"Home.""
"We're leaving together.""
Nia looked at him.
"Not tonight.""
His expression shifted from anger to disbelief.
"Nia, don't walk away from me.""
She held his gaze.
"Then stop giving me reasons to.""
She turned toward the exit, leaving the manager's paperwork safely inside her handbag and her phone firmly in her hand.
Behind her, the relatives remained seated around the long table.
Nobody laughed.
Nobody called her selfish.
And nobody could pretend the evening had gone according to plan.
As Nia reached the doorway, her phone vibrated.
A new notification appeared from her bank.
She stopped.
The message was brief, automatically generated, and impossible to mistake for something Daniel had said.
*YOUR CARD SECURITY SETTINGS HAVE BEEN UPDATED.*
Nia stared at the screen.
She hadn't changed those settings.
Slowly, she turned back toward the table.
May you like
Daniel was watching her.
And when he saw the notification in her hand, the color drained from his face all over again.
