Chapter 3 - DANIEL KNEW MY CAR NEEDED SERVICE

Daniel’s first full interview lasted six hours.
I did not attend.
I received summaries through counsel.
He admitted affair.
That part was almost mundane compared to everything else.
Madison Vale had worked as marketing consultant for Carter Development.
They started affair seven months before crash.
I had suspected emotional distance.
Not person.
Then business.
Carter Development had expanded too fast.
Three commercial projects.
Debt around $38 million.
Not insolvent.
But one lender threatened covenant breach.
Graham Pike offered restructuring.
Red Harbor Advisory would buy distressed Carter debt and inject liquidity.
Initial plan:
Graham’s entity 40%.
Daniel 30%.
Outside investors 30%.
Then Daniel proposed I invest personally.
Did he ask me?
Once.
At dinner.
He said:
“I may have opportunity to buy back some Carter debt at discount.”
I said:
“Send me materials.”
He did not.
Later he told Graham:
Claire is in.
I was not.
Then Madison’s 20%.
Where from?
Daniel transferred half his intended interest to her.
Why?
To hide affair-related financial support and give her future upside.
Then my funds.
After accident, Daniel used expired authorization and credentials to transfer nearly $3m as “Claire investment contribution.”
Graham questioned but eventually accepted funds after receiving attorney letter claiming Daniel had authority.
Who wrote letter?
Victor Sloan, Carter family counsel.
He relied on outdated medical authorization.
Did Victor know expired?
Investigators believed yes.
There.
Another player.
Then Graham received equity for debt contribution.
So his involvement in Red Harbor was real and partly legitimate.
But did he know my money unauthorized?
Emails showed doubts.
He asked.
Daniel lied.
Victor vouched.
Then what did Graham do after suspecting?
Not enough.
He could have called me or Dad.
He did not.
Why?
Because deal profited him.
Willful blindness.
Not mastermind perhaps.
Still culpable.
Then crash.
Daniel knew brake warning.
His interview:
“I saw warning light.”
“Why did you cancel service?”
“I needed the car that evening.”
But he did not drive my car.
Wait: service account was my vehicle. Why would Daniel cancel? He said dealership couldn't pick up and he told them reschedule.
Then I drove later.
Did he tell me warning?
He claimed:
“I thought it was sensor.”
Why?
No mechanic said.
Then investigators found text to Graham that afternoon:
D: Claire’s car is throwing brake-service warning again.
Graham:
Then get it serviced.
Daniel:
Dealer can’t until Monday.
Graham:
Don’t let her drive it.
There.
My father read and went silent.
Daniel knew.
Graham warned.
Then why did I drive?
Because Daniel texted:
Your car is ready. Took care of warning.
He lied.
What did he do?
Cleared dashboard notification through vehicle settings.
Not mechanical sabotage.
He made warning disappear.
Then let me drive.
That could be reckless.
Potential criminal negligence depending law.
But did he want crash?
Evidence did not show.
Why hide warning?
He had borrowed my SUV earlier and did not want argument? Pathetic.
Maybe he needed me to attend event? Let's see.
He claimed he believed warning was software glitch because brakes “felt fine.”
No expert support.
Then after crash, guilt.
Did he then exploit injury?
Yes.
That transformed negligence into further betrayal.
Even if crash not planned.
Then Evelyn’s recording.
She said in house:
“If Claire had just stayed home that night, none of this would be happening.”
At first sounded sinister.
Context later:
She knew Daniel had warning.
She blamed Claire for driving rather than her son for hiding it.
Then another:
“The accident gave us time. Stop wasting it.”
That was worse.
To Daniel.
What “time”?
Time to restructure Carter business while I was incapacitated.
Not evidence she caused crash.
But exploitation.
Then Madison.
Did she know warning?
No evidence.
She knew affair, financial vehicle, some transfers.
She claimed Daniel told her I voluntarily invested.
She accepted 20% ownership despite putting no money.
That should have raised questions.
She chose not to ask.
Then ballroom.
Why laugh?
Jealousy.
Cruelty.
Daniel had promised divorce.
Told her I was “clingy” and “using disability to keep him.”
She believed what served.
Then soup.
Evelyn did it because I refused to sign divorce papers that afternoon?
Yes.
Let's establish.
Daniel had placed settlement papers at reception prep room.
I refused.
Evelyn confronted.
Called me burden.
Soup.
Madison joined humiliation.
That physical/public conduct was theirs.
Not part sophisticated financial plot.
Again personal cruelty + fraud intersect.
Then father’s business partner.
Graham had been beside Daniel’s car at service station because they were exchanging Carter debt documents.
Not sabotage.
But service-station footage exposed secret business relationship.
The twist became financial, not murder.
Good.
Then bigger:
Why was Graham helping Daniel behind Arthur’s back?
Because Graham wanted Carter Development assets for Bennett expansion? Maybe.
Need tension.
Graham had independent Pike Strategic but sat on Bennett board.
Conflict.
He had been using information from Bennett to structure personal deals.
That was serious.
May you like
He may not have planned crash, but betrayed father.
Then Dad had to face partner.
