Chapter 8 - MADISON CAME TO ME WITH THE MESSAGE DANIEL NEVER EXPECTED HER TO KEEP

Six months later Madison requested meeting.

I almost refused.

Her lawyer said she had evidence.

We met with counsel.

Madison looked thinner.

She placed old phone backup.

“Daniel asked me to delete this.”

Message two days after crash.

DANIEL: Claire’s worse than doctors expected.

Then:

MADISON: Are you still leaving her?

DANIEL: Not now. It’ll look terrible.

My stomach turned.

Then:

M: So what are we doing?

D: We wait.

Then a week later:

D: Mom says if Claire stays impaired long enough, Carter can be stabilized before divorce.

Then:

M: Using her money?

Pause.

D: It’s marital planning.

Madison replied:

That sounds like stealing.

Interesting.

Then Daniel:

She gave me authority.

Then Madison:

If she signed, fine.

There.

She had doubts.

Chose easiest answer.

Then later:

M: Why am I getting Red Harbor shares?

D: Because when this is over, I want you secure.

Then:

M: Does Claire know?

D: Not yet.

There.

Madison definitely knew I did not know about her stake.

That destroyed full innocence.

Then:

“Why show me?”

She looked down.

“Because Daniel told investigators I designed Red Harbor.”

Did she?

“No.”

Then records supported Graham/Marcus? Actually Graham/Daniel/Victor structure. Madison did not design.

She wanted protect herself.

Self-interest.

Fine.

Then I asked:

“Why did you laugh when Evelyn poured soup on me?”

She closed eyes.

“Because I hated you.”

Simple.

“Why?”

“You had everything.”

I almost smiled.

Wheelchair.

Cheating husband.

Financial theft.

Everything.

But from outside:

Wealth.

Father.

Company.

Name.

Daniel married me.

Then:

“He kept saying he couldn’t leave because you were fragile.”

“So you blamed me.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you know he hid brake warning?”

“No.”

Then:

“Did you know transfers unauthorized?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you suspect?”

“Before ballroom.”

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

There.

Then:

“So you watched me being humiliated while knowing Daniel might be stealing.”

“Yes.”

No friendship after.

But cooperation.

She forfeited/disgorged Red Harbor interest.

Repaid certain benefits under settlement.

No criminal charge if prosecutors couldn't prove fraud knowledge beyond reasonable doubt.

She left Daniel.

Of course.

Then asked forgiveness?

“I’m sorry.”

I answered:

“I believe you regret it.”

Not same as forgive.

Then:

“You don’t need to be in my life.”

May you like

She nodded.

Done.
