Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Stole A Daughter

The message changed everything.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

My mother just stared at the phone.

Her hands were shaking.

I had never seen Victoria Harper afraid before.

Not when my father died.

Not when she built the company alone.

Not when she faced powerful businessmen twice her age.

But now…

A single message had broken her.

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

Then quickly locked the phone.

“It’s nothing.”

I knew immediately.

It was not nothing.

“Mom.”

She sighed.

“You should not have to carry my past.”

I looked at her.

“But your past is why Elena was taken.”

Her eyes filled with pain.

And I realized something.

My mother had spent thirty years protecting everyone.

But nobody had protected her.

The next morning, the attorney returned.

His name was James.

He had worked with my mother for more than twenty years.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“There is more.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“More?”

James nodded.

“The person who contacted Mrs. Harper is connected to Elena’s disappearance.”

Elena sat quietly.

She looked overwhelmed.

For thirty years, she had lived believing she was simply abandoned.

Now she discovered an entire family had been searching for her.

A family that was stolen from her.

James opened the folder.

“Thirty years ago, someone paid a private agency to arrange Elena’s adoption.”

My mother whispered:

“I know.”

“No.”

James looked at her.

“You don’t know everything.”

The room became silent.

“The adoption was not legal.”

Elena looked shocked.

“What?”

James turned toward her.

“You were not given away.”

A pause.

“You were taken.”

Nobody moved.

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

James nodded.

“Someone created false documents.”

Marcus stared.

“Who?”

James looked at the records.

“The person who signed the paperwork was Victoria’s own mother.”

My grandmother.

Again.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I knew she hated me.”

A tear fell.

“But I never thought…”

She couldn’t finish.

Marcus stood.

“Why would Grandma do this?”

James answered:

“Because she believed the family name mattered more than people.”

He looked at Marcus.

“She believed only one child should inherit.”

Marcus looked down.

“So she chose me.”

“Yes.”

The room became uncomfortable.

Because Marcus had spent years believing he was special.

But he had actually been chosen by someone else’s cruelty.

Elena looked at him.

“I spent my whole life wondering why nobody wanted me.”

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Those were the first honest words I heard from him.

That afternoon, my mother showed Elena something.

An old room in the mansion.

A room nobody entered.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of letters.

Photographs.

Birthday cards.

Everything.

Elena stared.

“What is this?”

My mother touched one of the boxes.

“Everything I prepared for you.”

She opened a box.

Inside were tiny baby clothes.

A birthday dress.

A stuffed animal.

“I bought these every year.”

Elena started crying.

“You thought I would come back?”

My mother nodded.

“Every single year.”

The two women hugged.

And for the first time…

Thirty years of pain began to heal.

But not everyone was happy.

That night, Marcus received a call.

He walked into the hallway.

I followed because something felt wrong.

I heard a woman’s voice.

“Did you find her?”

Marcus froze.

“Who is this?”

The woman laughed.

“You know exactly who.”

His face changed.

“Grandma?”

My blood ran cold.

My grandmother was dead.

Or at least…

That was what we believed.

Marcus whispered:

“You’re alive.”

The woman answered:

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And you ruined everything.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“What do you want?”

Her answer was terrifying.

“I want my family back.”

The call ended.

Marcus stood there frozen.

Then he saw me.

“You heard.”

I nodded.

“Who was she?”

May you like

He looked terrified.

“My grandmother.”
