Chapter 12: The Place Where My Father Died
The old railway bridge stood outside town, surrounded by thick woods and an abandoned industrial yard.
It was the place where Robert had supposedly died.
The same place where Daniel had staged the boating accident years earlier.
Detective Harper studied the message.
“Daniel wants you there.””
I nodded.
“And he has Noah.””
“We don't know that for certain.””
I showed her the photograph of the SUV.
“Then we need to find out.””
Robert approached.
“I know the bridge.””
“Can you identify another entrance?””
He nodded.
“There's an old service road on the eastern side. Daniel used to bring stolen documents there before he moved them.””
Detective Harper immediately contacted the tactical team.
“We'll approach from both sides.””
I looked at Robert.
“Why did Daniel try to kill you there?””
My father took a slow breath.
“Because I found the original trust ledger.””
He explained that twenty years earlier, he had discovered Daniel was using the family estate to finance illegal transfers of children through private clinics.
Robert confronted him.
Daniel promised to return the money.
Instead, he arranged an accident.
He damaged Robert's vehicle and pushed it off a bridge.
Robert survived.
But Daniel convinced the family he was dead.
Then he disappeared.
“I spent years moving between small towns,” Robert said.
“I wanted to find evidence before going after him.””
“Why didn't you contact me?””
“I tried once.””
“When?””
“After you married Vanessa.””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
Robert's face tightened.
“I went to your wedding.””
I stared.
“You were there?””
“Outside the church. I watched you standing at the altar.””
My throat tightened.
“I wanted to come inside. But Daniel was there.””
I remembered that day.
Daniel had stood beside me as my best man.
He had given a speech.
He had hugged me.
I felt physically ill.
Robert continued.
“He told me that if I approached you, he would make sure you lost everything.””
I looked toward the road.
“I'm sorry.””
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Don't be. None of this was your fault.””
Detective Harper returned.
“We're ready.””
We drove toward the bridge.
The forest became denser as we approached.
Police vehicles stopped several hundred yards away.
The tactical team moved ahead.
Robert and I remained behind Detective Harper.
Then a flashlight appeared in the distance.
Three short flashes.
One long flash.
A signal.
Harper nodded to the officers.
We moved forward.
The bridge was empty.
At least, it appeared to be.
A black SUV sat near the eastern entrance.
Its doors were open.
A small backpack lay on the ground.
I recognized it immediately.
Noah's.
I picked it up.
Inside was a school notebook, a water bottle, and a photograph.
The photograph showed a teenage boy standing beside Vanessa.
They were smiling.
On the back, someone had written:
*FIRST MEETING — AGE FOURTEEN.*
I felt sick.
My wife had known our son for two years.
She had looked into his face.
She had spoken to him.
And she had never told me.
A metallic sound came from beneath the bridge.
Detective Harper raised her hand.
Everyone stopped.
Then a voice echoed from the darkness.
“Marcus!””
Daniel.
He stepped onto the lower walkway.
Noah stood beside him.
His wrists were tied.
I immediately started forward.
Detective Harper caught my arm.
“Wait.””
Daniel smiled.
“Bring the documents.””
I held up the folder.
“Let Noah go.””
“First, the papers.””
I looked at Noah.
He was frightened, but he was standing.
“Are you hurt, son?””
He shook his head.
Daniel laughed.
“Look at that. A family reunion.””
Robert stepped forward.
“Daniel, this ends here.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You should have died twenty years ago.””
Robert shook his head.
“You should have stopped lying twenty years ago.””
Daniel pulled a small remote control from his pocket.
“Do you know what this does?””
Detective Harper immediately raised her weapon.
“Drop it!””
Daniel smiled.
“There's a fuel tank beneath this bridge. One press, and this entire structure becomes a very expensive memory.””
My stomach tightened.
“Don't do it.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You always were your father's son.””
He turned toward Noah.
“Ask him what happened to your mother.””
Noah looked confused.
“What?””
Daniel laughed.
“Your biological mother didn't die in childbirth, boy. She was murdered because she knew too much.””
Noah looked at me.
I shook my head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Daniel raised the remote.
“Your father is the reason you were abandoned.””
I took one step forward.
“Noah, look at me.””
The boy turned.
“You were never abandoned by choice. We didn't know you existed.””
Daniel pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
He pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Detective Harper's voice cut through the darkness.
“The device is disabled, Daniel.””
His smile disappeared.
Robert moved.
He rushed toward Noah while the tactical team advanced.
Daniel swung the remote at Robert's face.
My father fell against the railing.
I ran forward.
The two of us struggled with Daniel near the edge of the walkway.
He punched me in the stomach.
I stumbled.
Then he grabbed my jacket.
“You ruined everything!””
I pushed him away.
“No. You did!””
He lunged again.
A sharp crack echoed.
A warning shot.
Daniel froze.
Detective Harper had him covered.
“Hands where I can see them!””
Daniel dropped the remote.
Two officers rushed forward and forced him onto the ground.
Robert pulled Noah away from the railing.
I ran to my son.
“Are you okay?””
Noah nodded.
Then he stared at me.
“You really are my father?””
I felt tears fill my eyes.
“Yes.””
He looked away.
“I don't know what to do.””
I didn't force him to hug me.
I simply stood beside him.
“You don't have to decide anything tonight.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he asked:
“Are Maya and Lily okay?””
I smiled through my tears.
“They're safe.””
Noah looked down.
“I saw their pictures.””
“Where?””
“In Daniel's office. He kept photographs of all of us.””
Detective Harper approached.
“Mr. Hayes, we need to get everyone to safety.””
As the officers escorted Daniel toward a police vehicle, he suddenly shouted.
“You think you've won?””
Nobody answered.
He laughed.
“The trust isn't yours anymore!””
Detective Harper stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel smiled.
“Someone already claimed it.””
Robert's face went pale.
“That isn't possible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother signed the transfer yesterday.””
I turned toward the officers.
“Eleanor?””
Detective Harper immediately called the station.
A few seconds later, she received an update.
Her expression changed.
“Mrs. Hayes has been taken to the hospital.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
“She collapsed during questioning.””
Daniel laughed again.
Then he leaned toward me.
“Ask her what she did with the money.””
I stepped closer.
“What money?””
He smiled.
“The twelve million dollars.””
Detective Harper's radio crackled.
An officer spoke urgently.
“Detective, we found a transfer confirmation on Mrs. Hayes's phone.””
Harper listened.
Then she looked at me.
“The entire trust was transferred yesterday to an offshore account.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Who received it?””
She read the account beneficiary.
Then she looked up.
“Vanessa Hayes.””
I stared at her.
My wife.
The woman who had helped Daniel abduct our daughter.
The woman who had known about Noah.
The woman who had signed the forged guardianship papers.
She had received twelve million dollars.
And suddenly, I understood why she had never seemed afraid of being caught.
Daniel was being arrested.
But someone else had already won.
My phone rang.
It was the hospital.
A nurse spoke urgently.
“Mr. Hayes, your mother is asking for you.””
“Is she conscious?””
“Yes. But she says you must come immediately.””
“Why?””
The nurse hesitated.
“She says Vanessa isn't the person you should be worried about.””
I closed my eyes.
“Who should I be worried about?””
The nurse lowered her voice.
“Your mother says the person who arranged the entire operation is someone you've known your whole life.””
Then she added:
“He's already inside the hospital.””
I looked toward Robert.
His face had gone completely white.
Because we both knew there was only one person Daniel had always been afraid to name.
Dr. Samuel Whitmore.
May you like
The doctor who had supposedly disappeared six months earlier.
And according to the nurse, he was waiting for me in my mother's hospital room.
