Chapter 6: The Family Secret That Changed Everything
I couldn't move.
For several seconds, the words made no sense.
“Explain,” I said.
Eleanor lowered herself into a chair.
Vanessa stood near the doorway, staring at the floor.
Detective Harper remained beside the coffee table.
“Mrs. Hayes,” she said, “I need you to clarify what Daniel meant.””
My mother pressed both hands together.
“Marcus, your father wasn't Daniel's brother.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Daniel was my first husband. Your biological father was a man named Robert Hayes.””
I felt the room tilt.
My entire childhood had been built around the story that Daniel was my uncle.
My mother had told me Robert died before I was born.
She said Daniel had stepped in to help raise me.
I remembered the old photographs.
Daniel standing beside my mother at family gatherings.
Daniel carrying me on his shoulders.
Daniel teaching me how to throw a baseball.
I had called him Uncle Daniel because that's what I had been taught.
“You told me Robert died.””
“He did.””
“How?””
Eleanor looked toward Detective Harper.
“Daniel caused the accident.””
The detective's expression hardened.
“Are you saying he murdered Robert?””
My mother began crying.
“I don't know exactly what happened. I only know Robert wanted to leave me, and Daniel couldn't accept it.””
I gripped the back of the chair.
“Why would he kill my father?””
“Because Robert had discovered what Daniel was doing with the family trust.””
I stared at her.
“What family trust?””
Eleanor wiped her cheeks.
“Your father was Rachel's mother's attorney. He discovered Daniel had been moving money from the estate into private accounts.””
The pieces began falling into place.
Rachel's parents.
The twelve-million-dollar trust.
The forged guardianship papers.
My father.
Daniel.
But something still didn't make sense.
“How did I become part of this?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Robert left evidence before he died. Documents showing Daniel's financial crimes. He gave them to me and told me to protect you.””
“Did you?””
She looked down.
“No.””
The answer came so quietly that it hurt more than a shout.
“What did you do?””
“I gave the documents to Daniel.””
I stepped backward.
My mother reached toward me.
“I was afraid. He threatened to take you away.””
“So you helped him?””
“I was twenty-six years old, Marcus. I was terrified.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were terrified, so you spent the next thirty years lying to me?””
She covered her face.
Detective Harper interrupted.
“Where are those documents now?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Who else knows about them?””
My mother looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Eleanor swallowed.
“Because Daniel told me he had found another copy.””
I turned toward my wife.
“What does that have to do with you?””
Vanessa backed against the wall.
“Nothing.””
My mother spoke again.
“He told me someone inside the house had been helping him.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“No.””
She began shaking her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“Did you help Daniel?””
“I never wanted Maya taken!””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She looked at Detective Harper.
Then she looked at me.
And finally, she nodded.
I felt as though someone had punched me.
“How long?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Almost a year.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She explained that Daniel had contacted her through an encrypted messaging application.
At first, he had only asked for information about Maya.
Her school schedule.
Her medical records.
Photographs.
Then he began asking about me.
My work.
My travel plans.
The security system.
The keys.
“He said he wanted to protect the girls,” Vanessa whispered.
“By kidnapping our daughter?””
“He said he would never hurt her.””
I stared at her.
“You helped him get into my house.””
She nodded.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“He promised to pay off our mortgage.””
I couldn't believe it.
“You sold our daughter's safety to pay off a mortgage?””
“He said it was temporary!””
Detective Harper stepped closer.
“Mrs. Hayes, did you know Daniel planned to take Maya today?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“Did you know where he was taking her?””
“No. He told me he would contact me after he had both girls.””
“Both girls?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He wanted Lily brought to the same location.””
Rachel's voice suddenly came through my phone.
I had forgotten the call was still connected.
“Where is Lily now?””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“I don't know.””
Rachel began crying.
“Please. She's eight years old. She's never even met her sister.””
I closed my eyes.
Two little girls.
Both born on the same day.
Both separated before they could remember each other.
One had grown up believing she was an only child.
The other had grown up believing the people raising her were her biological parents.
And now both were in the hands of a man who had manipulated their entire lives.
Detective Harper took control.
She instructed officers to secure the house and requested immediate assistance from authorities in Connecticut.
Then she turned toward Vanessa.
“Do you have any messages from Daniel?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My phone.””
“Where is it?””
“Upstairs.””
An officer accompanied her.
A few minutes later, they returned with her phone.
Detective Harper reviewed the messages.
Most were short.
Instructions.
Photographs.
Questions about Maya's routine.
Then she stopped scrolling.
“Mr. Hayes.””
I moved beside her.
On the screen was a message sent the previous evening.
*Tomorrow, bring the gold key. The compartment must be opened before Marcus sees the original documents.*
Another message followed.
*If Maya refuses to cooperate, remind her that Rachel abandoned her once. She will believe anything after that.*
My stomach turned.
They had planned to manipulate my daughter.
To make an eight-year-old believe her biological mother had abandoned her.
Detective Harper continued reading.
Then she found an audio attachment.
“Do you know what this is?”” she asked Vanessa.
My wife shook her head.
The detective played it.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
“Vanessa, the girl must remain calm. Once Marcus understands the situation, he'll sign the documents. He always was an emotional man. His father was exactly the same.””
A pause.
Then Daniel continued.
“And if Eleanor starts talking, remind her what happened to Robert.””
The recording ended.
My mother began shaking uncontrollably.
Detective Harper looked at her.
“Mrs. Hayes, I need to know where Daniel is.””
Eleanor stared at the phone.
“I know one place.””
“Where?””
“The old Hayes property. Near Lake Winfield.””
I remembered the place.
It was a large country house that had belonged to my grandfather.
Daniel had supposedly sold it before his boating accident.
“Does he still own it?””
Eleanor nodded.
“He never sold it.””
Detective Harper immediately relayed the address to the officers.
I grabbed my jacket.
This time, I didn't ask permission.
“I'm going.””
She blocked the doorway.
“Mr. Hayes, I understand how you feel. But I need you to listen to me. We're going to recover your daughter safely.””
I looked directly at her.
“Then don't waste another minute.””
She studied my face before finally nodding.
“Stay with my team. Do exactly what they tell you.””
As we left the house, my phone vibrated.
A new message.
No number.
Just a photograph.
Maya was sitting at a wooden table.
Lily sat beside her.
The girls were holding hands.
They looked frightened, but neither appeared injured.
I zoomed in.
Behind them was a large window overlooking a lake.
I recognized the shoreline.
Lake Winfield.
Then I noticed something else.
A handwritten note had been placed between the girls.
*ONE OF YOU HAS TO TELL MARCUS THE TRUTH.*
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Where are they?””
He laughed.
“Together, at last.””
“Let them go.””
“Not until you bring me what your father left behind.””
“I don't have anything.””
“You're lying.””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Daniel's voice became colder.
“Your father hid the original trust documents before he died. Your mother knows where they are. And so do you, whether you remember it or not.””
I looked toward Eleanor, who was being escorted to a police vehicle.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“Ask your mother about the music box she gave you on your tenth birthday.””
The call ended.
I remembered that music box.
It had been the last gift my mother gave me before I went away to boarding school.
It had a tiny wooden horse on top.
I had kept it for years.
But I hadn't seen it since I moved into my first apartment.
I turned toward Eleanor.
“Where is my music box?””
My mother stopped walking.
Her face went completely white.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel has it.””
A police radio crackled.
An officer rushed toward Detective Harper.
“Detective! We've got a problem.””
“What?””
“The property at Lake Winfield is empty.””
My heart sank.
The officer continued.
“But we found something inside.””
He held up a small photograph.
It showed Maya and Lily standing together in front of a hospital nursery.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE TWINS WERE NEVER THE ONLY CHILDREN.*

And beneath that sentence was another name.
*MARCUS HAYES — PATERNITY RECORD: ALTERED.*
