Chapter 5: The Man We Buried Alive

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Two officers entered the house while a detective spoke with me in the living room.

Her name was Detective Harper.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a calm expression that made her difficult to read.

“Mr. Hayes, I need you to walk me through everything from the beginning.””

I handed her the photographs and showed her the threatening messages.

She studied the image of Maya.

“Do you recognize this location?””

“No.””

“What about the man?””

I enlarged the second photograph.

The man standing beside Lily wore a dark navy coat. His face was partly turned away, but I recognized the shape of his jaw.

I pointed.

“That's my uncle.””

Detective Harper looked up.

“Your uncle?””

“Daniel Hayes. He supposedly died six years ago.””

“Supposedly?””

I told her about the boating accident.

She made a note.

“Was his body recovered?””

I shook my head.

“No. The family held a memorial service. We were told the boat had been found, but his body hadn't.””

Detective Harper exchanged a glance with the uniformed officer beside her.

“That is important.””

She asked for Eleanor and Vanessa to join us.

My mother entered slowly.

Vanessa followed with her arms wrapped around herself.

Detective Harper placed the photograph on the coffee table.

“Do either of you recognize this man?””

Eleanor began crying immediately.

Vanessa nodded.

“That's Daniel.””

“Is he alive?””

My mother looked at me.

“Last time I saw him, yes.””

I stood.

“When?””

“About two years ago.””

I stared at her.

“You saw my uncle two years ago?””

“He contacted me.””

“Why didn't you tell anyone?””

“Because he threatened me.””

“With what?””

Eleanor looked toward Vanessa.

“He said he would expose what we had done.””

Detective Harper leaned forward.

“What exactly did you do?””

Neither woman spoke.

The detective placed the old birth certificate beside the photograph.

“Mr. Hayes has already found evidence of an illegal private placement involving two newborn children. I suggest you cooperate before this becomes more complicated.””

Vanessa began talking.

It came out in fragments.

She admitted that Daniel had approached Eleanor shortly after the twins were born.

He offered to arrange a private adoption for Lily.

He claimed he knew a wealthy couple who desperately wanted a child.

But he had never introduced the couple to Rachel.

Instead, he arranged for the baby to be transferred through a private legal intermediary.

Vanessa had agreed to keep Maya.

Eleanor had helped alter the records.

And Daniel had promised that everyone would be financially protected.

“Did he pay you?”” Detective Harper asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Eleanor looked down.

“I received money.””

“How much?””

“Two hundred thousand dollars.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You sold information about two newborn children for two hundred thousand dollars?””

“I didn't sell them!””

“What would you call it?””

She began crying.

Detective Harper raised one hand.

“Mr. Hayes, let her finish.””

Eleanor continued.

“Daniel said the money was compensation for the trouble. He said the family taking Lily would provide her with a wonderful life.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

I turned away.

I couldn't look at her.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

“I'm at the police station in Hartford. I came here after I received the photograph.””

“Do you know where Maya is?””

“I know who took her.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

“Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes. I received a message from him this morning. He said he was going to bring the girls together.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants the trust released.””

I looked at Detective Harper and put the call on speaker.

“What trust?”” I asked.

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“When my parents died, they left money for my children. I was their only daughter. The estate was divided into two equal trusts, one for each twin.””

I stared at the floor.

“How much?””

“Almost twelve million dollars combined. The money was placed in a protected account until the girls turned eighteen.””

Detective Harper immediately started taking notes.

Rachel continued.

“But Daniel discovered the trust before the babies were even born. He had worked with my father. He knew the estate documents.””

I remembered the message.

The people who adopted Lily were never supposed to know Maya existed.

“Did he adopt Lily?””

“No. He arranged for a family to take her, but he remained her legal guardian through a private agreement. He told them the biological mother had died.””

My throat tightened.

“And Maya?””

“He knew Eleanor had taken her. He thought he could control Vanessa through the secret.””

I looked at my wife.

Vanessa was shaking her head.

“I didn't know about the money,” she whispered.

Rachel heard her.

“Vanessa?””

My wife stepped toward the phone.

“Rachel, I swear I loved Maya. I didn't know what Daniel intended.””

Rachel's voice became cold.

“You held my daughter down and cut her hair.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

Rachel continued.

“You don't get to tell me how much you loved her.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harper asked Rachel to provide Daniel's last known address.

Rachel gave her a location outside Hartford.

Then she said something else.

“There's a reason Daniel wants both girls now.””

“What reason?”” I asked.

“The trust administrator discovered discrepancies in the adoption records. Someone has been trying to claim the funds using forged guardianship documents.””

Detective Harper looked up sharply.

“Who signed them?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Marcus, I think you should see something.””

My phone received an incoming image.

It was a scanned legal document.

The heading read:

*PETITION FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AND RELEASE OF MINOR BENEFICIARY ASSETS.*

The applicant's signature was Daniel Hayes.

But the witness signature at the bottom belonged to someone else.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was Vanessa's.

I looked at my wife.

“You signed this?””

She backed away.

“I didn't know what it was.””

“You signed a document giving Daniel access to the trust?””

“He told me it was an insurance form!””

Detective Harper took the phone.

“Mrs. Hayes, I need you to explain this signature.””

Vanessa started shaking.

Then the front door opened.

A uniformed officer hurried into the living room.

“Detective, we just received information from the highway patrol.””

“What information?””

“A vehicle matching the description from the abduction photograph was spotted near an abandoned property in Connecticut.””

My heart leaped.

“Is Maya there?””

“We don't know yet.””

Detective Harper stood.

“Prepare the location for a coordinated response.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“I'm coming.””

“No,” she said firmly.

“You stay here.””

“That's my daughter!””

“And if the person holding her is armed, you could make things worse.””

I wanted to argue.

But then my phone rang again.

This time, it was Maya.

I answered immediately.

“Baby?””

“Daddy?””

Her voice was tiny.

“Where are you?””

“I'm in a car.””

“Are you alone?””

“No. There's a lady here.””

“What lady?””

Maya whispered something.

Then I heard a door slam.

A man's voice came through.

“Marcus, you have exactly one hour.””

I recognized that voice.

It was older, rougher, but unmistakable.

Uncle Daniel.

He laughed softly.

“It's been a long time, nephew.””

I couldn't speak.

He continued.

“You should have left the past buried.””

Then he said something that made me realize this had never been about the money alone.

“Ask Eleanor what happened to your real father.””

The call ended.

Detective Harper looked at me.

“Your real father?””

I turned toward my mother.

Eleanor's face crumpled.

May you like

And she whispered:

“Daniel didn't just steal Rachel's children, Marcus. He stole yours, too.””
