Chapter 9: The Father Who Never Died

I read the name over and over.

Robert Hayes.

My father.

The man I had spent my entire life believing had died before I was born.

“That's impossible,” I whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

“My mother believed he was alive.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“She tried. Daniel intercepted her letters.””

I looked at Detective Harper.

“Can you find him?””

“We can start with the information in this journal.””

Rachel turned to another page.

“There was an address.””

She pointed to a handwritten line.

A small town in Vermont.

And beneath it:

Robert is living under his mother's maiden name.

Detective Harper photographed the page.

“We'll have someone check it.””

I stood.

“I'm going with you.””

“Mr. Hayes, I need you to remain available.””

“My father might be alive. My daughter is missing. My wife helped arrange the kidnapping. How much more do you expect me to sit through?””

Detective Harper held my gaze.

“I expect you to help us bring Maya and Lily home without giving Daniel another advantage.””

I looked down.

She was right.

Daniel had spent decades predicting how people would react.

He knew I would run toward my daughter.

He knew I would become reckless.

And he was using that knowledge against me.

I sat back down.

“Tell me what you need.””

Detective Harper requested the original birth records from the hospital and began coordinating with officers in Vermont.

Rachel remained beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “I'm sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For not finding you sooner.””

“You were looking for Maya and Lily.””

“I was looking for all three of you.””

She showed me another photograph.

It was taken in front of a small house.

A man stood beside a young woman holding a baby.

The man had dark hair, a strong jaw, and my eyes.

“That's Robert,” she said.

I stared at him.

“How old was he?””

“Twenty-seven.””

I touched the edge of the photograph.

He looked ordinary.

Happy.

Like someone who had no idea his entire family was about to be torn apart.

Rachel explained that Robert had discovered Daniel's involvement in the trust shortly after Claire's pregnancy.

He confronted him.

Then he disappeared.

The family was told he had died in an accident.

But there was never a body.

No official identification.

No funeral.

Just a story repeated until everyone believed it.

An officer entered the room.

“Detective, we've got a response from Vermont.””

Harper stood.

“What did they find?””

“The address belongs to a retired mechanic named Robert Miller. His fingerprints match a record connected to Robert Hayes.””

I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.

“Is he alive?””

The officer nodded.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

My father was alive.

Somewhere in Vermont, the man I had mourned for thirty years was still breathing.

Detective Harper immediately arranged contact.

But before she could call, my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

“Marcus.””

A man's voice.

Older.

Rough.

But strangely familiar.

“Son?””

My knees weakened.

“Who is this?””

“It's Robert.””

I couldn't speak.

“I don't know what Daniel told you,” he continued.

“But I've been trying to reach you for years.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why didn't you come home?””

There was a long silence.

“Because I was told you had died.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“They showed me a hospital record. They told me Claire's baby hadn't survived.””

I looked at Rachel.

She covered her mouth.

Robert continued.

“I spent years believing I had lost both of you.””

“Then how did you find out?””

“Your grandfather contacted me before he died. He told me the truth.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn't you come to see me?””

“I tried. Daniel threatened you. He said if I came near you, he'd make sure you disappeared just like Claire.””

My hands began shaking.

“Where are you?””

“Vermont. But listen carefully. Daniel isn't working alone.””

I looked at Detective Harper.

“What do you mean?””

“Samuel Whitmore.””

Rachel's face went pale.

Robert continued.

“He's been helping Daniel. He falsified the original medical records. He arranged the medication Claire was given. And he helped change the twins' identities.””

Detective Harper moved closer.

“Can you provide evidence?””

Robert paused.

“I have the original ledger.””

“What ledger?””

“The payment records. The names of everyone involved. The hospital staff.

The lawyers. The families who received children.””

My heart pounded.

“Do you know where Daniel is?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Not at the community center.””

I froze.

“Then where?””

Robert lowered his voice.

“He's going to the old Hayes estate tonight. He wants to open the original trust account.””

Detective Harper immediately signaled to the officers.

“Why tonight?”” I asked.

“Because tomorrow morning, the girls' guardianship records become public through the court process. Daniel knows he has very little time left.””

I looked at the photograph of Maya and Lily.

“Are they with him?””

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“Are they safe?””

“For now.””

I closed my eyes.

“Can you help us get them back?””

“I've been waiting thirty years for this moment.””

The call ended.

Detective Harper began issuing instructions.

Officers would move toward the old estate while another team secured the community center.

Rachel stood beside me.

“I want to go.””

Harper shook her head.

“You're too close to this.””

“They're my nieces.””

“And that is exactly why you need to stay somewhere safe.””

Rachel sat down reluctantly.

I looked at my wife.

Vanessa had been brought into the station for further questioning.

She was sitting behind a glass partition.

When she saw me, she stood.

I approached the glass.

She lifted the telephone.

I picked up the receiver.

“Marcus, please.””

I said nothing.

“I know I don't deserve forgiveness.””

“You're right.””

She started crying.

“I didn't know Daniel would take her.””

“You gave him her schedule.””

“I thought he wanted to scare you into signing the documents.””

“You gave him the key to our house.””

She lowered her eyes.

“He said he would give Maya back.””

I stared at her.

“Do you know what Maya asked me when I found her after you cut her hair?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She asked whether I would let you cut her hair again.””

My wife's face crumpled.

“I loved her.””

“Love isn't something you say after you've helped someone hurt a child.””

I put the receiver down.

As I walked away, Vanessa shouted my name.

I didn't turn around.

A few minutes later, Detective Harper approached.

“We're ready.””

I grabbed my jacket.

She handed me a small photograph.

It showed the old Hayes estate.

A large stone house stood beside a wooded driveway.

The windows were dark.

But one room was illuminated.

“Your father says Daniel uses the basement entrance,” she explained.

“Our team will secure the property first.””

I nodded.

We drove through the night.

The estate looked exactly as I remembered it from childhood.

Tall trees.

A cracked stone fountain.

An iron gate that creaked when the police vehicles passed through.

I remembered coming here with my grandfather.

I remembered playing hide-and-seek with Daniel.

I remembered the music box.

And I remembered a locked room in the basement that my grandfather had forbidden me to enter.

Detective Harper approached the entrance with two officers.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“Marcus?””

I turned.

A man stepped out from behind the trees.

He was older than the photographs.

His hair was almost entirely gray.

But his eyes were mine.

Robert Hayes.

My father.

For a moment, we simply stared at each other.

Then he approached slowly.

“Son.””

I wanted to hug him.

I wanted to demand answers.

I wanted to ask why thirty years had disappeared between us.

Instead, I whispered:

“Are my daughters inside?””

He nodded.

“Both of them.””

My chest tightened.

“Then let's bring them home.””

Robert caught my arm.

“There's something you need to know first.””

“What?””

He looked toward the dark house.

“Daniel has been expecting you.””

A light switched on in the basement window.

Then a loudspeaker crackled.

Daniel's voice echoed across the property.

“Welcome home, Marcus.””

A second later, a door opened.

Maya stepped into the light.

Lily stood beside her.

Both girls were holding hands.

Daniel appeared behind them, one hand resting on Maya's shoulder.

He smiled.

“Now that the whole family is finally together, I think it's time we discussed who deserves to inherit the truth.””

Robert reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“Don't let him open the basement safe,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

My father stared at the house.

“Because the documents inside don't just expose Daniel.””

He swallowed.

May you like

“They prove that one of the girls was never supposed to be born.””

And then, from somewhere inside the house, a gunshot rang out.
