Chapter 11: The Nurse Who Signed the Lie

Patricia Wells arrived at the police station shortly after eight.

She was a small elderly woman with silver hair, a walking cane, and a brown leather handbag.

She looked at Mom for a long time before sitting down.

“Rachel,” she whispered.

Mom stared at her.

“You know me?””

Patricia nodded.

“I held your daughters the night they were born.””

Mom's eyes filled.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Patricia looked toward Detective Miller.

“Am I being recorded?””

“Yes,” the detective replied.

“Good. I want everything documented.””

She placed her handbag on the table and removed a small photograph.

It showed two newborn babies in hospital bassinets.

On the back were their names.

Emily Carter.

Lily Carter.

And beneath the names was a handwritten note:

*Both healthy. Both breathing. Both alive.*

Mom began crying.

“Why did you let them separate my children?””

Patricia lowered her head.

“Because I was paid to falsify the records.””

The room went silent.

Detective Miller leaned forward.

“Who paid you?””

“Robert Carter. Daniel's father.””

Mom looked horrified.

“How much?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

Mom stood.

“Fifty thousand dollars to destroy my family?””

Patricia didn't defend herself.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

“Wrong?”” Mom repeated.

“You helped a man steal one of my babies!””

Patricia began crying.

“I thought it would be temporary. Robert told me Laura was unable to care for either child. He said you had agreed to raise Emily, and that Lily would remain with Laura until the family could arrange a legal adoption.””

Mom shook her head.

“I never agreed to anything.””

“I know that now.””

Detective Miller interrupted.

“Let's establish the facts. What exactly did you falsify?””

Patricia opened her handbag again.

She removed an old notebook.

“I kept a private record because I was afraid Robert would eventually deny everything.””

She turned to a page dated twenty years earlier.

“The twins were born at 11:42 p.m. and 11:49 p.m. Both were healthy.

Laura was exhausted, but she was conscious. She asked to hold both babies.””

Mom covered her mouth.

Patricia continued.

“Robert arrived shortly after midnight with Daniel. He told Laura that she needed to sign several documents before the hospital discharged her.””

“What documents?”” Detective Miller asked.

“An agreement allowing Daniel to take one child home temporarily.””

Mom shook her head.

“Why would Laura agree?””

Patricia looked uncomfortable.

“Because Robert threatened to report her for medical neglect. He had arranged for a doctor to write a statement claiming she was emotionally unstable.””

Mom's voice cracked.

“She had just given birth.””

Patricia nodded.

“I know.””

“What happened to Lily?””

“Daniel took Emily home. Laura was told that Lily had died.””

I stared at Patricia.

“How?””

“The hospital created a false death record. A separate discharge record was entered under a different identity.””

Detective Miller's expression hardened.

“Who signed it?””

Patricia looked at Mom.

“I did.””

Mom covered her face.

“Why?””

“Because Robert told me that if I refused, he would make sure I lost my nursing license. He knew about my husband's medical bills. He used my debt against me.””

Detective Miller wrote something down.

“Was Laura involved in creating the false record?””

“No. She believed the baby had died.””

“And Rachel?””

“She was told that Emily was her only child.””

Mom looked at Patricia.

“Did you know Daniel was abusing me?””

Patricia's eyes filled.

“I heard rumors.””

“Rumors?””

“I heard he was controlling. I heard he had threatened you.””

“And you did nothing?””

Patricia began crying harder.

“I was ashamed. Every year, I told myself I would come forward. Every year, I found another reason to wait.””

Mom turned away.

I couldn't blame her for being angry.

Patricia had helped create the nightmare that had swallowed our family.

But she had also kept the only records that might undo it.

Detective Miller examined the notebook.

“Why did you return to the property tonight?””

Patricia took a breath.

“Because Daniel called me.””

“What did he want?””

“He told me Robert's letter had been found. He wanted me to remove the original hospital ledger before the police discovered it.””

Michael looked shocked.

“He knew about the letter?””

Patricia nodded.

“He has known for years.””

Detective Miller leaned forward.

“Did you remove the ledger?””

“No.””

“Where is it?””

Patricia looked directly at Mom.

“Inside the wall of the storage building. Behind the old wooden shelves.””

Detective Miller immediately contacted the search team.

Patricia continued.

“There's something else. Robert didn't just arrange the separation because of the inheritance.””

Mom frowned.

“What else?””

Patricia opened another section of her notebook.

“Laura had discovered something about Daniel shortly before the twins were born.””

“What?””

“He was using the family business to move money through accounts belonging to employees.””

Michael stiffened.

“That can't be right.””

Patricia nodded.

“Robert discovered it too. He wanted the scandal buried. He believed that if the twins were raised separately, the family could control the trust and keep the business intact.””

Detective Miller looked at Michael.

“Do you know anything about these accounts?””

Michael shook his head.

“I was never involved in the business finances.””

Patricia looked at him.

“Your father used your name for one of the accounts.””

Michael stood abruptly.

“What?””

“He told Daniel it was necessary to protect the family assets.””

Michael looked sick.

“I never authorized that.””

Detective Miller made another note.

“That's something we'll investigate.””

Mom took a deep breath.

“Patricia, is there anything else?””

The elderly woman hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.

“This was written by Laura shortly after she left the hospital.””

Mom took it.

The handwriting was shaky.

Rachel,

If you ever discover the truth, please understand that I never wanted to lose my girls.

Daniel promised he would bring Emily back to me when everything was settled. I believed him because I had no other choice.

But there is something he doesn't know.

I kept the original letter Robert gave me.

It contains the real agreement, including the names of everyone involved.

Mom looked up.

“Where is it?””

Patricia shook her head.

“Laura told me she hid it somewhere Daniel would never look.””

Detective Miller asked, “Do you know where?””

Patricia pointed to the photograph of the hospital.

“Look at the back.””

Detective Miller turned it over.

There was a small handwritten number beneath the babies' names.

Room 214.

Mom frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Patricia answered quietly.

“Laura gave birth in Room 214. The hospital converted it into a storage office years ago.””

Detective Miller immediately called the hospital.

After a short conversation, she ended the call.

“There's a sealed cabinet in that room. The hospital administrator says it has not been opened in more than fifteen years.””

Mom looked at me.

“Could the letter still be there?””

Patricia nodded.

“If Laura put it where she said she would, yes.””

Then Detective Miller's phone rang again.

She listened.

Her face hardened.

“What do you mean the cabinet is empty?””

A pause.

“Who had access?””

Another pause.

She ended the call.

Mom stood.

“What happened?””

Detective Miller looked at us.

“Someone opened Room 214 this afternoon.””

“Who?””

“The hospital's access log shows a visitor signed in under the name Patricia Wells.””

Everyone turned toward the elderly woman.

Patricia's face went white.

“I wasn't there.””

Detective Miller slowly closed her notebook.

“Then someone is using your identity.””

Patricia gripped her handbag.

And for the first time since she entered the room, she looked genuinely terrified.

“Oh, no.””

“What?”” Mom asked.

Patricia whispered:

“Robert isn't the only person who knew about Room 214.””

May you like

She looked at me and Lily.

“Your grandmother knew too.””
