Chapter 14: The Grandmother's Final Confession
Eleanor Carter was sitting beside a large window when we arrived at the care residence.
She was thinner than the woman in the old photographs, but her eyes were bright.
Michael entered first.
“Mom?””
Eleanor turned.
For several seconds, she simply stared at him.
Then she began to cry.
“Michael.””
He dropped to his knees beside her wheelchair.
“I'm sorry.””
She touched his face.
“Oh, my boy.””
“I believed Dad. I believed you didn't want to see me.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Your father made sure you believed whatever was convenient for him.””
Michael buried his face in her hands.
Mom approached slowly.
“Eleanor?””
The elderly woman looked up.
“Rachel.””
Mom knelt beside her.
“I need to know everything.””
Eleanor nodded.
“I know.””
Detective Miller introduced herself and explained that the conversation was being recorded.
Eleanor agreed.
Then she looked at me and Lily.
“My beautiful girls.””
Lily approached first.
“Are you our grandmother?””
Eleanor smiled.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Lily hesitated.
“Why didn't you come to see us?””
Eleanor's smile faded.
“Because I was a coward.””
Michael looked up.
“Mom, don't.””
“No. They deserve the truth.””
She reached for both girls.
“Your grandfather told me that if I spoke about the separation, he would make sure neither of you ever received your inheritance.””
I sat beside her.
“Did you know where we were?””
“I knew where Emily was. I didn't know where Laura had taken Lily after she left town.””
“Then why didn't you tell Mom?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Because I was trying to protect her.””
Mom shook her head.
“You could have trusted me.””
“I should have.””
Eleanor looked toward Detective Miller.
“There's something about the fifty thousand dollars you need to understand.””
The detective opened her notebook.
“Please explain.””
Eleanor continued.
“Robert created a false bank account using Rachel's identity. He transferred fifty thousand dollars into it, then arranged for the account to be closed. Later, he told Daniel that the money had been paid to Rachel as compensation for accepting Emily.””
Mom looked horrified.
“He made it look like I sold my own daughter.””
Eleanor nodded.
“He wanted Laura to believe that you had willingly accepted the arrangement.””
“And Daniel?””
“He wanted Daniel to believe that you had betrayed Laura. He used the story to keep both women suspicious of each other.””
Mom covered her mouth.
For twenty years, she had believed Laura had abandoned her.
Laura had believed Mom had accepted money to take Emily.
Neither woman knew the truth.
Robert had built a wall between them.
And Daniel had spent years maintaining it.
Detective Miller leaned forward.
“Do you have evidence of the false account?””
Eleanor nodded.
“I kept copies of the original transfers.””
She reached into a small drawer beside her chair.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
“My husband thought he had destroyed these.””
Detective Miller opened it.
There were bank statements, letters, and a copy of the original trust agreement.
The transfer records showed that the money had gone into an account controlled by Robert Carter.
Not Rachel.
Not Laura.
Robert.
But there was another document.
A handwritten confession.
Eleanor looked at Mom.
“This is the letter Robert wrote to Daniel shortly before he died.””
Detective Miller unfolded it.
Daniel,
I have done everything necessary to protect the family name. The twins must remain separated until the trust becomes available.
You must stop Rachel from asking questions. Laura must remain under control.
If the arrangement is exposed, the company and the family estate will be destroyed.
I have transferred the money into the reserve account. Do not allow Michael to discover the transaction.
You know what to do.
Detective Miller looked up.
“Where is this reserve account?””
Eleanor answered immediately.
“Switzerland.””
Michael stared.
“My father had an overseas account?””
“Yes.””
“Does Daniel have access?””
Eleanor nodded.
“He inherited control after Robert died.””
Detective Miller took a photograph of the letter.
“Do you know the account number?””
Eleanor opened another envelope.
“I have the details.””
Mom sat back.
“So the money from our savings, the money Laura was promised, and the family trust were all connected?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Robert believed he could control everything through the children.””
I looked at my grandmother.
“Why did Dad want us together now?””
Eleanor took my hand.
“Because your eighteenth birthday is approaching. Once you both become adults, the trust belongs to you. He needs you to sign documents giving him authority over it.””
“Would we have to sign?””
“No, sweetheart. But he planned to make you believe you had no choice.””
Lily looked frightened.
“Could he take us away?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not anymore.””
Detective Miller closed the folder.
“Mr. Carter's attempts to obtain custody, the forged documents, the financial transfers, and the threats will all be investigated. We also need to locate Laura.””
Mom looked at Eleanor.
“Do you know where she is?””
The old woman hesitated.
Then she reached beneath her blanket and removed a folded note.
“Laura gave me this before she disappeared.””
Mom opened it.
There was an address.
And a sentence written beneath it.
*If Daniel comes looking for me, tell Rachel I finally found the courage to tell her the truth.*
Detective Miller immediately sent officers to the address.
They found Laura in a small apartment above a closed bookstore.
She was frightened but unharmed.
When Mom saw her, neither woman spoke at first.
Then Laura stepped forward.
“Rachel.””
Mom stared at her.
“Why did you let me believe you abandoned Emily?””
Laura began crying.
“Because I thought you had agreed to take her.””
“I never agreed to anything!””
“I know that now.””
Mom's face crumpled.
“I spent twenty years believing you didn't want me to see you.””
Laura shook her head.
“I spent twenty years believing you had been paid to keep my daughter.””
They stood facing each other.
Two women who had once been best friends.
Two mothers who had been manipulated into believing the worst about each other.
Then Mom opened her arms.
Laura began sobbing.
They embraced.
I stood beside Lily, watching them.
For the first time, the adults in our family were telling the truth.
Later that evening, Detective Miller informed us that Daniel had been located.
He had been arrested at a private airport while attempting to leave the state.
Officers found forged trust documents, financial records, and a ticket booked under another name.
But the most important discovery was in his luggage.
A sealed envelope addressed to both of us.
Inside was a document titled:
*Voluntary Transfer of Beneficial Interest.*
It would have transferred control of our entire inheritance to Daniel Carter.
Our signatures were already printed at the bottom.
All that was missing were our actual signatures.
Mom looked at the document.
“He wanted to steal everything.””
Detective Miller nodded.
“He was planning to have both of you sign it before your birthday.””
I looked at Lily.
“Neither of us is signing anything.””
She squeezed my hand.
“Never.””
For the first time, we laughed together.
But the following morning, Detective Miller received one final update.
Daniel had agreed to cooperate.
He wanted to make a statement.
May you like
And he had one condition.
He would only speak if both his daughters were present.
