Chapter 5: The Night My Father Changed Everything

Mom didn't sleep that night.

Neither did I.

At sunrise, Officer Bennett returned with Detective Miller, a woman in her forties who carried a laptop and a thick stack of documents.

She introduced herself, then asked Mom if she was ready to explain what had happened twenty years earlier.

Mom nodded.

I sat beside her.

Detective Miller opened her laptop.

“Let's start with Laura Mitchell. How did you meet her?””

Mom stared at the screen.

“We met in college. We were roommates for two years. She was my closest friend.””

“And your husband?””

“Daniel met her through me.””

“Were they ever romantically involved?””

Mom hesitated.

“Yes.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

Mom squeezed my hand.

“They dated briefly before I met your father. They broke up, and Laura introduced us.””

Detective Miller typed something.

“Did their relationship continue after you married Daniel?””

Mom shook her head.

“Not that I knew of.””

Then she looked down.

“Until I became pregnant.””

She explained that when Laura discovered the pregnancy, she had suddenly become distant.

She stopped attending family dinners.

She stopped answering calls.

And then, three weeks before I was born, she appeared at Mom's house crying.

“She told me she was pregnant too,” Mom said.

Detective Miller looked up.

“By Daniel?””

Mom nodded.

I stared at her.

“Dad had two babies?””

“No, sweetheart. Laura was pregnant with you. I wasn't pregnant.””

The words landed heavily.

I had spent my entire life believing I was the biological daughter of the woman sitting beside me.

But the truth was much more complicated.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Mom's eyes filled.

“Because your father told me Laura had abandoned you.””

Detective Miller leaned forward.

“Can you explain?””

Mom took a shaky breath.

“Laura gave birth to you at St. Mary's Hospital. She was alone when Daniel called me. He said Laura had suffered complications and didn't want to see the baby.””

“Was that true?”” I asked.

“I don't know.””

Mom continued.

“Daniel brought you home three days later. He told me Laura had signed the necessary paperwork and that we could raise you as our own.””

Detective Miller asked whether Mom had seen those papers.

“No. Daniel said the hospital was handling everything.””

“Did you ever question it?””

“I did. Several times. But he always became angry.””

Mom wiped her eyes.

“He told me that if I ever mentioned Laura again, he would take you away.””

Detective Miller stopped typing.

“Did he ever show you an adoption order?””

Mom shook her head.

“No.””

The detective exchanged a glance with Officer Bennett.

“That's important. We'll need to verify your legal status and obtain the original hospital records.””

I looked at Mom.

“Does that mean I'm not really your daughter?””

She turned toward me immediately.

“You are my daughter in every way that matters.””

“But Laura says she is.””

Mom pulled me into her arms.

“I don't know what happened between Laura and Daniel. But I know I raised you. I know who sat beside your bed when you had nightmares. I know who learned to braid your hair because you wanted it just like the girls at school.””

I began crying.

“And I know who called the police when she couldn't protect you herself,” Mom whispered.

Detective Miller waited until we had settled down.

Then she opened another document.

“There's something else we discovered.””

She turned the laptop toward Mom.

It showed a scanned bank statement.

A transfer of $80,000 had been made from a joint savings account.

The recipient was a company called Mitchell Family Consulting.

Mom stared.

“That was our college fund.””

Detective Miller nodded.

“We traced several payments to this company. It appears to be connected to Laura.””

“Why would Daniel send her all that money?””

“We're investigating.””

Then the detective opened another file.

“This is where things become more concerning.””

It was a custody petition.

Daniel Carter had submitted an application requesting temporary sole custody of me.

The filing date was two weeks earlier.

I recognized the signature.

Dad's.

But the signature beside my mother's name looked different.

Detective Miller pointed to the final page.

“Your husband included an affidavit stating that Rachel Carter had a history of emotional instability, had threatened to abandon the family, and was unable to provide a safe home for Emily.””

Mom stared in disbelief.

“He wrote that?””

“According to the filing, yes.””

I looked at the page.

There was something else.

A paragraph stated that I had repeatedly expressed a desire to live with my biological mother, Laura Mitchell.

I had never said that.

“That's a lie!””

Detective Miller nodded.

“We're aware that Emily denies making this statement. We'll need to determine how it was obtained.””

Mom was trembling.

“He was going to take her.””

“Possibly.””

Detective Miller closed the laptop.

“We also found that someone contacted your daughter's school requesting her attendance and medical records.””

Mom looked at me.

“Who?””

The detective hesitated.

“Laura Mitchell.””

I felt sick.

“Why does she want my school records?””

“We don't know yet.””

Then Detective Miller reached into her folder and pulled out a printed email.

“There's one more thing. This message was sent from your husband's second phone to Laura three days ago.””

Mom took the paper.

Her eyes moved across the screen.

Then she covered her mouth.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Detective Miller read aloud.

“Once Rachel is removed from the house, we can finish the arrangement. Emily will come with us. The money will be transferred before anyone realizes what happened.””

Mom stood.

“Removed from the house?””

Detective Miller nodded.

“We're trying to establish what that means.””

Mom looked at me.

“He wasn't planning to leave me.””

She began shaking.

“He was planning to make me disappear from your life.””

I thought about the way Dad had pointed at me in the kitchen.

The way he had told me I didn't belong in his argument.

Maybe he hadn't wanted me to witness what he was doing.

Maybe he had wanted me to remain completely unaware until it was too late.

Detective Miller's phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

A minute later, she returned.

“Mrs. Carter, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“Your husband has requested a lawyer, and he's claiming that the documents found in his office belong to Laura.””

Mom looked confused.

“Why would he do that?””

The detective lowered her voice.

“Because Laura has just given us a statement claiming Daniel acted alone.””

Mom sat down.

“What?””

“She says she knew nothing about the custody petition or the money transfers.””

I stared at the detective.

“But she was with him last night!””

“Yes,” Detective Miller replied.

“And she has photographs of the two of them together.””

Mom looked at the printed email.

Then she noticed something I hadn't.

At the bottom was a second recipient.

An address belonging to someone named Michael Carter.

Dad's older brother.

Mom whispered:

“Michael wasn't supposed to know about Emily.””
