Chapter 6: The Uncle Who Had Been Watching Us
Michael Carter arrived at the assistance center shortly after noon.
I had never met him.
Dad always said his older brother lived too far away and didn't want anything to do with our family.
But when Officer Harris escorted him into the conference room, I immediately noticed something familiar.
He had Dad's eyes.
The same dark eyebrows.
The same small scar near his chin.
But unlike Dad, he didn't walk into the room like he owned it.
He looked nervous.
“Rachel,” he said quietly.
Mom stood.
“Why are you here?””
Michael looked at me.
“Is that Emily?””
Mom moved in front of me.
“Don't look at her.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I understand.””
Detective Miller gestured toward a chair.
“Mr. Carter, we need to discuss your brother's financial arrangements and the documents he has been submitting.””
Michael sat down.
“I know.””
“You know what?””
He placed a brown envelope on the table.
“Everything.””
Mom stared at him.
“Then why didn't you say something?””
Michael rubbed his face.
“Because I was afraid of Daniel.””
Mom laughed bitterly.
“That's the same excuse everyone gives.””
“I know.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, photographs, and several pages of handwritten notes.
Detective Miller examined the first document.
“Where did you get these?””
“Daniel sent them to me.””
“Why?””
Michael looked toward Mom.
“Because he wanted me to help him.””
“Help him do what?””
Michael swallowed.
“Take Emily.””
The room became silent.
Mom gripped the back of her chair.
“Why would you help him?””
“I refused.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
Michael looked down.
“Because I didn't know what he was capable of.””
Detective Miller opened the first email.
It was dated six weeks earlier.
Daniel had written:
Laura is willing to cooperate. Rachel is becoming difficult. I need you to confirm the financial arrangement before Friday.
A second email followed.
Once the custody order is approved, the house will be sold. The proceeds will be divided between us.
Mom stared at the screen.
“Our house?””
Michael nodded.
“Daniel planned to sell it.””
“But I own half of that house!””
“He was trying to transfer the property without your permission.””
Detective Miller examined the documents.
“Did he have a buyer?””
Michael nodded.
“Laura's company.””
Mom sat down heavily.
I looked at him.
“Why would my dad sell our house?””
Michael took a breath.
“Because he wanted to start over somewhere else.””
“With Laura?””
He nodded.
“And he wanted you to come with them.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“But why?””
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“Your father believes you're entitled to a large inheritance.””
Mom frowned.
“What inheritance?””
Michael pulled out another document.
It was a copy of an old will.
Detective Miller read through it.
Then she looked at Mom.
“Rachel, do you know who left this inheritance?””
Mom shook her head.
Michael answered.
“Your father-in-law.””
Mom's face changed.
Daniel's father had died when I was very young.
I barely remembered him.
He had given me a small silver bracelet when I was born. Mom kept it in a jewelry box beside her bed.
Michael explained that their father had established a trust for his grandchildren.
The money was supposed to become available when each grandchild turned eighteen.
There was only one named beneficiary.
Me.
“How much?”” Mom whispered.
Michael looked at the document.
“Just over two million dollars.””
I stared at him.
Two million?
That was more money than I could imagine.
Detective Miller turned another page.
“The trust administrator is listed as Daniel Carter.””
Michael nodded.
“Dad trusted him to manage the money until Emily turned eighteen.””
“And what has happened to the trust?””
Michael hesitated.
“Daniel has been trying to access it for months.””
Detective Miller closed the folder.
“Has he succeeded?””
“No. The administrator requires proof of the beneficiary's identity and a court order for early withdrawal.””
Mom looked at me.
“So that's why he wanted custody.””
Michael nodded.
“He needed legal authority to make decisions on Emily's behalf.””
Detective Miller leaned back.
“Why didn't you contact the trust administrator?””
“I did. I sent them copies of Daniel's emails.””
“Good.””
Michael reached into the envelope again.
“This isn't everything.””
He pulled out a small USB drive.
“Daniel asked me to store this for him. I copied the files before I refused to help.””
Detective Miller took it.
“What is on it?””
“Audio recordings. Financial records. And a video.””
Mom's face tightened.
“What video?””
Michael looked at her.
“The one Daniel made in your kitchen.””
I remembered the kitchen.
The overturned chair.
Dad's hand in Mom's hair.
My own scream.
“There's a video of what happened?””
Michael nodded.
“Daniel installed a security camera near the kitchen several months ago. He told me it was for insurance purposes.””
Detective Miller immediately asked an officer to secure the recording.
Michael continued.
“He didn't know the camera was still connected to the backup system.””
Mom covered her mouth.
“Why would he record himself hurting me?””
Michael looked genuinely ashamed.
“Because he wanted evidence that you were unstable.””
Detective Miller's expression hardened.
“What do you mean?””
“He planned to edit the footage. He wanted to show you screaming and throwing things, then claim you attacked him.””
Mom began crying again.
I remembered how Dad had pointed at Mom during arguments and told her nobody would believe her.
Now I understood why he had seemed so confident.
He had been preparing his own version of the truth.
Detective Miller stood.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to provide a formal statement. We also need to verify the authenticity of these files.””
Michael nodded.
“There's something else.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a photograph.
It showed Dad standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was Laura.
And between them was a little girl.
She looked about five years old.
I stared at the picture.
“Who is that?””
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Then he looked at Mom.
“That's Laura's daughter.””
Mom frowned.
“Laura has another child?””
Michael nodded.
“And Daniel has been paying for everything.””
Detective Miller took the photograph.
“What's the child's name?””
Michael looked down.
“Lily.””
Mom seemed confused.
“Why is that relevant?””
Michael swallowed.
“Because Lily isn't Laura's daughter.””
The room went completely silent.
He looked directly at me.
“She's Daniel's.””
I couldn't understand.
“But Dad only has me.””
Michael shook his head.
“No, Emily. Your father has been hiding another child for years.””
Mom stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.
“Who is Lily's mother?””
Michael hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Laura.””
Mom shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
Michael pulled one final document from the envelope.
It was a hospital birth record.
And the date printed at the top was the same date as mine.
Detective Miller slowly placed the document beside the photograph.
Two babies.
One birthday.
Two different birth records.
Mom stared at the pages.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel didn't just hide another child.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“He hid a twin.””
Michael nodded.
And just as Detective Miller reached for the phone to contact the hospital, an officer rushed into the room.
“Detective, we have a situation.””
“What happened?””
“Laura Mitchell has disappeared.””
Detective Miller stood.
“Since when?””
“Twenty minutes ago. But that's not all.””
He looked at me.
“We just received a call from a hospital. A little girl named Lily Carter has been brought into the emergency department.””
Mom grabbed my hand.
“What happened to her?””
The officer swallowed.
“She told the nurse that her father said she was going to meet her sister.””
May you like
Then he added the words that made my mother collapse into her chair.
“She also said her father instructed her not to tell anyone that Emily was her twin.””
