Chapter 10 - THE CHILD THEY WANTED

Caleb was standing outside the vault.

Carol held his hand.

My heart broke.

“Let him go.”

Carol smiled.

“He came willingly.”

“No.”

Caleb looked frightened.

“She said you were in trouble.”

I knelt.

“Come to Mommy.”

Carol tightened her grip.

“You're making this difficult.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Let the boy go.”

Carol laughed.

“You still think you can save them.”

She turned toward Ryan.

“Your father couldn't.”

Ryan's face hardened.

“You killed him.”

Carol's smile disappeared.

“I didn't.”

“You poisoned him.”

“He was already dying.”

“You're lying.”

Carol looked at me.

“Ask your mother.”

My mother stepped forward.

“She did it.”

Carol looked shocked.

“You.”

“Yes.”

My mother pulled out a recording.

“Everything you said was recorded.”

Carol's face went pale.

My mother had secretly recorded their conversation years earlier.

Carol had confessed.

The police were already outside.

Thomas had called them.

Carol tried to run.

Officers stopped her.

She was arrested.

But the fight wasn't over.

Richard escaped.

Sarah was arrested later.

Michael was cleared.

The court reviewed the evidence.

The forged will was destroyed.

The original trust was validated.

I became emergency trustee.

Caleb remained with us.

But Richard still had the original ledger.

We found him three days later.

He was hiding at the old Carter estate.

He surrendered.

He gave us the ledger.

Inside were names of everyone involved.

The investigation lasted months.

People were arrested.

Companies were seized.

Assets were frozen.

The Carter family fortune was placed under independent supervision.

Caleb's trust remained protected.

And Carol went to prison.

But there was one final question.

Why had my father-in-law chosen me?

The answer came in his final letter.

He wrote:

“Emily, I chose you because you are the only person who never asked what Caleb would inherit.”

I cried when I read that.

“You loved my son.”

“You loved my grandson.”

“And you never treated money as more important than family.”

The letter ended:

“If they ever make Caleb feel less than a human being because of his inheritance, remind him that wealth is only useful when it protects people.”

I folded the letter.

Ryan held my hand.

We were finally free.

Or so I thought.

Six months later, I received a package.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Carol sitting in prison.

Beside her was another woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

On the back was a message:

CAROL DIDN'T BUILD THE PLAN.

I stared at the photograph.

Then my phone rang.

A man's voice said:

“Emily.”

“Who is this?”

“You think the Carter family conspiracy ended.”

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

“You can't have it.”

The man laughed.

“I don't need it.”

“Then what?”

“I need what your father hid inside it.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The second ledger.”

The line went dead.

Ryan walked into the room.

“What happened?”

I handed him the photograph.

He looked at it.

His face changed.

“I know that woman.”

“Who?”

“My father's sister.”

I stared.

“She died before I was born.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

May you like

He pointed to the photograph.

“She was the original trustee.”
