Chapter 11 - THE SECOND TRUSTEE

We searched every record.
Ryan's aunt, Margaret Carter, had supposedly died twenty-five years earlier.
But the photograph proved otherwise.
She was alive.
And she had been visiting Carol in prison.
We discovered that Margaret had been living under an assumed name.
She had controlled several companies.
She had access to the trust.
And she had one objective.
Caleb.
Not because she wanted his money.
Because she wanted the second ledger.
We learned that the second ledger contained names of people who had disappeared.
Witnesses.
Informants.
Officials.
People who had helped expose the original conspiracy.
Margaret wanted it destroyed.
We found her address.
A remote property in Oregon.
We went there with federal investigators.
The house was empty.
But the basement wasn't.
There were files everywhere.
Photographs of Caleb.
Plans of our house.
Maps.
Surveillance reports.
And one photograph of me holding Caleb at the hospital.
I stared at it.
“She's been watching him.”
Ryan looked at the wall.
“She has been watching all of us.”
Then we found a locked room.
Inside was a desk.
On it was a handwritten note.
YOU FOUND THE FIRST LEDGER.
Then:
NOW FIND THE MAN WHO WROTE THE SECOND.
A photograph was attached.
It showed my father.
But beside him was a man I didn't recognize.
My mother did.
She called me immediately.
“That is Samuel Hayes.”
“Who?”
“Your father's old attorney.”
“Is he alive?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“He died ten years ago.”
She went silent.
“Mom?”
“I thought he did.”
That sentence was enough.
We found Samuel's old records.
He had left behind a daughter.
Her name was Rachel.
She was now a judge.
And she had been assigned to our guardianship case.
I felt sick.
The person deciding whether Carol could control Caleb was connected to the original conspiracy.
We immediately reported the conflict.
The judge recused herself.
But before she did, she sent us a sealed envelope.
Inside was a letter from her father.
He had written:
“I could not stop them.”
“But my daughter can.”
The letter contained coordinates.
A storage facility.
We went there.
Inside was the second ledger.
But it wasn't alone.
There was a recording.
Samuel's final testimony.
He explained that the trust had been created to protect children of witnesses.
The Carter family had inherited the responsibility.
Caleb was the final protected beneficiary.
But there was another clause.
If the family became compromised, control would pass outside the bloodline.
To an independent guardian.
The name was:
Emily Carter.
Again, me.
I finally understood why everyone was trying to remove me.
As long as I remained trustee, nobody could control Caleb.
Then a sound came from behind us.
A door closed.
We turned.
Margaret stood there.
She looked at me.
“You were always smarter than your father.”
I stepped forward.
“Why did you do this?”
“Because your father betrayed me.”
“How?”
“He chose the boy over the family.”
“What family?”
“The family that built everything.”
“You mean the family that stole everything.”
She smiled.
“You think you know the truth.”
“I know enough.”
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed my father with a newborn baby.
Caleb.
But the photograph had been taken before Caleb was born.
I stared.
“That is impossible.”
May you like
Margaret smiled.
“Exactly.”
