Chapter 8 - THE MAN WE TRUSTED

Michael didn't deny it.

He simply closed the office door.

“You finally figured it out.”

Ryan stepped back.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Thomas Reed.”

“You said Michael was your name.”

“It was useful.”

“You lied to us.”

“I protected you.”

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.”

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father trusted me.”

“Then why did you work with Carol?”

“I didn't.”

“What about the payments?”

“They weren't mine.”

He showed us the bank records.

The account had been created using his stolen identity.

Someone had been impersonating him.

“Who?”

He looked at the door.

“Sarah.”

I froze.

“Sarah?”

“She was working for Richard.”

“But she helped us.”

“She wanted the ledger.”

Thomas explained.

Sarah's daughter was not being held by Richard.

She had never existed.

It was a story Sarah invented to gain sympathy.

“She manipulated us.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“Carol's house.”

We went there immediately.

The house was empty.

But we found a hidden room.

Inside were dozens of recordings.

Carol talking to Sarah.

Sarah talking to Richard.

Richard talking to someone else.

And one recording made our blood run cold.

Carol's voice:

“Once Emily becomes trustee, we force her to make one mistake.”

Sarah asked:

“And if she doesn't?”

Carol answered:

“Then we take Caleb.”

I stared at the screen.

Ryan clenched his fists.

Then another voice appeared.

My mother.

“Don't touch the boy.”

Carol replied:

“Your daughter won't stop me.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

Thomas nodded.

“She has been fighting Carol for years.”

“But my mother died.”

“No.”

I stared.

“She didn't.”

Thomas showed me a recent photograph.

My mother was alive.

Living under another name.

I couldn't breathe.

“She abandoned me.”

“She was hiding.”

“From whom?”

“Your grandfather.”

The mystery became even deeper.

My mother had known about the trust.

She had known Carol was dangerous.

She had disappeared to protect me.

But she had never told me.

We found her address.

A small house outside Austin.

I knocked.

The door opened.

My mother stood there.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Emily.”

I started crying.

“You're alive.”

She nodded.

“I am sorry.”

“Why did you leave?”

“To protect you.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.”

She touched my face.

“I know.”

She explained everything.

My father had discovered the trust conspiracy.

He had asked her to disappear.

Carol had threatened her.

Richard had threatened me.

And my grandfather had ordered people to watch us.

But there was one thing she had never told anyone.

She had the original confession.

The confession Ryan's father had recorded before his death.

She handed me a sealed envelope.

Inside was a memory card.

We played it.

Ryan's father appeared.

“If you're watching this, Carol has already tried to take control.”

He looked exhausted.

“The trust was designed to protect my grandson.”

Then he said:

“The person who truly controls the trust is not the trustee.”

He paused.

“It is the beneficiary.”

Caleb.

“Once Caleb turns eighteen, the evidence becomes public.”

I looked at my mother.

She nodded.

“Your father wanted the truth released.”

“What stopped him?”

“His death.”

Then the recording continued.

“Until then, protect Caleb.”

The screen went black.

I wiped my tears.

My mother looked at me.

“Your son is the key.”

“Key to what?”

“To exposing everyone.”

Then a car stopped outside.

My mother looked through the window.

Her face changed.

“That's him.”

“Who?”

May you like

She whispered:

“Your grandfather.”
