Chapter 7 - THE SECRET OF THE ORIGINAL LEDGER

The answer was hidden inside Ryan's father's office.

We returned to the old Carter headquarters.

The building had been closed for years.

Dust covered everything.

Robert led us to the executive floor.

“My father had a private room here.”

He opened a hidden panel.

Inside was a safe.

The combination was the date of Ryan's birth.

It opened.

Inside was a letter.

Robert read it.

Then he handed it to me.

The letter said:

Caleb is not merely an heir. He is the final witness.

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Robert explained.

Years earlier, the trust had been used to hold evidence from a massive financial conspiracy.

The people involved had spent decades trying to erase it.

The original ledger contained proof.

But there was something else.

A recording.

A recording made by Ryan's father.

It contained testimony from the last surviving witness.

We searched the office.

Behind a bookshelf, we found an old cassette.

Robert inserted it into a player.

A man's voice began.

“I saw Richard meet Carol.”

Then:

“They planned to remove Ryan.”

I froze.

The witness continued.

“They wanted control of the trust.”

Then another voice.

Carol.

“I don't want the boy harmed.”

Richard answered:

“He doesn't need to be harmed.”

Carol asked:

“Then what?”

“He needs to disappear.”

Ryan looked at me.

The recording continued.

“The boy means nothing until he becomes the beneficiary.”

Then:

“Once he has a child, the inheritance transfers.”

I felt cold.

The conspiracy had begun before Caleb was even born.

They had been waiting for him.

The recording ended.

Then the office door opened.

A man stood there.

Robert stepped forward.

“Richard.”

Richard smiled.

“You finally found the tape.”

Ryan stared.

“You killed my father.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Richard looked at Robert.

“Your uncle.”

Robert froze.

“That's impossible.”

Richard laughed.

“You still don't know.”

He pointed at the ledger.

“Your family has been lying to you for generations.”

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“You can't have it.”

Richard smiled.

“You think the ledger is evidence.”

“Isn't it?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“It is a list of people who were paid to keep the real evidence hidden.”

“What is the real evidence?”

Richard looked at me.

“Your father-in-law's final confession.”

I stared.

“Where is it?”

“Your mother has it.”

“Carol?”

“Yes.”

Richard turned to leave.

Ryan blocked him.

“Why tell us?”

Richard smiled.

“Because Carol is about to betray me.”

Then he left.

We didn't understand.

Until Michael called.

“Come immediately.”

We rushed to his office.

He had found something.

A hidden bank account.

It belonged to Carol.

The account contained millions.

But the payments were not from the Carter companies.

They came from an unknown foundation.

The foundation's name was:

Bennett Family Trust.

I stared.

“Bennett?”

Michael nodded.

“That's your maiden name.”

I froze.

“My family?”

He looked at me.

“Your father established this trust before he died.”

I couldn't breathe.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Ryan looked confused.

“Why would Emily's father fund Carol?”

“He didn't.”

Michael pointed to the records.

“The money went to Carol through a third party.”

“Who?”

Michael highlighted the account.

“Thomas Reed.”

I looked at Ryan.

Thomas.

The man we thought was helping us.

The man who had saved us.

The man who knew everything.

“Why would Thomas pay Carol?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Then my phone rang.

Thomas.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

Silence.

Then:

“Don't trust Michael.”

I froze.

“Why?”

“He's working for Carol.”

I looked at Michael.

He was standing across from me.

Then I saw his hand.

A black ring.

The same black ring.

My blood ran cold.

I dropped the phone.

Ryan looked at me.

“What?”

I whispered:

“Michael is Thomas.”

The man we had been calling Thomas had never been Thomas.

He had been Michael.

May you like

And the real Thomas Reed was someone else.

Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.
