Chapter 13: The Son They Planned to Sacrifice
Daniel sat motionless in the warehouse.
The fluorescent lights above us hummed softly. Somewhere outside, a truck passed along the road, its engine fading into the distance.
But none of us moved.
My son was staring at the document that listed his name beside five million dollars.
Five million dollars.
That was apparently the price Michael had assigned to his nephew's loyalty.
“Dad,” Daniel whispered, “I didn't know.””
I looked at him.
“I know.””
“No, you don't understand. I never wanted your company. I never asked Michael for money. I never agreed to any of this.””
“I believe you.””
Daniel covered his face.
“I signed something seven years ago. I gave him the authority to handle things while you were in the hospital. I thought I was helping.””
I pulled a chair beside him.
“Son, you were twenty-four. Your uncle told you he was protecting the business. You trusted him.””
“But my signature helped him.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked up.
“Are you going to blame me?””
I took a moment before answering.
“I blame you for what happened at the wedding. I blame you for watching your mother fall and pretending it was an accident. But I don't blame you for a document you signed without understanding its consequences.””
His eyes filled.
“Mom must hate me.””
Elaine stepped forward.
“Daniel, look at me.””
He raised his head.
“I don't hate you,” she said.
“Mom…”
“But I need you to understand something. I spent thirty-eight years raising you to recognize the difference between protecting someone and abandoning them.””
Daniel began crying.
Elaine touched his cheek.
“You forgot that lesson for a while. I hope you remember it now.””
He leaned into her hand.
“I will.””
Detective Hayes interrupted gently.
“Mr. Carter, I need to ask you about that document.””
Daniel wiped his eyes.
“Go ahead.””
“Seven years ago, when your father was hospitalized, did Michael explain what the voting rights transfer would allow him to do?””
“He said it was temporary authority. He told me Dad had approved it before the accident.””
“Did you speak with your father?””
“No. He was unconscious.””
“Did you consult an attorney?””
“No.””
Hayes nodded.
“Did you receive any money afterward?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I received a transfer of twenty-five thousand dollars.””
My head turned.
“What?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Michael told me it was reimbursement for helping with the company.””
“Did you know where it came from?””
“No.””
Hayes wrote something in his notebook.
“We'll need to examine that payment.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked at the succession plan.
“Detective, what happens if Michael has already activated the emergency authority?””
Hayes glanced at the document.
“We'll need to establish whether the authority is valid and whether any action has been taken under it. But we now have evidence suggesting a broader coordinated arrangement.””
He paused.
“There's something else.””
He turned the laptop toward us.
A hidden spreadsheet had been recovered from the same folder.
It contained a timeline.
The first entry was dated seven years earlier.
The second was dated eleven months earlier.
The third was dated six months earlier.
And the final entry was dated November 15.
Beside the final date were three words.
*Final control transfer.*
I studied the timeline.
“What happens on November 15?””
Hayes enlarged the spreadsheet.
“According to this, the property sale, the trust authority, and the company voting rights are all supposed to be finalized on that date.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That's two days from now.””
I looked at him.
“Which means Michael still believes he has time.””
Hayes nodded.
“We'll need to move quickly.””
He instructed the officers to preserve the laptop and the documents. Then he asked us to accompany him to the station to provide formal statements.
Before we left, my phone rang.
Michael.
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
“Don't answer.””
But I did.
“Hello, Michael.””
His voice was calm.
“Arthur. We need to talk.””
“About what?””
“About the mess you've created.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean the documents in the warehouse?””
There was silence.
Then he said, “I told you not to go looking through things that don't concern you.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“You knew we found them?””
“I know you have the laptop.””
Daniel moved closer to the phone.
“Uncle Michael, why did you put my name on that agreement?””
Michael sighed.
“Daniel, you shouldn't be involved in this conversation.””
“I'm already involved. You used my signature.””
“I gave you an opportunity to secure your future.””
“You planned to take my parents' house!””
“Your parents were going to give you that house eventually.””
“That's not your decision!””
Michael's voice hardened.
“You have no idea how much I sacrificed for this family.””
I stepped closer.
“What exactly did you sacrifice, Michael?””
He ignored me.
“Daniel, listen carefully. You have five million dollars waiting for you. All you have to do is cooperate.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“I don't want your money.””
“You don't understand what you're throwing away.””
“I understand perfectly.””
Michael laughed.
“You think your father will leave you everything after this? He's going to blame you for signing the original document.””
Daniel's face tightened.
I took the phone.
“Michael, the arrangement is over.””
“No, Arthur. You still don't understand.””
“Explain it to me.””
“You think the house is the most important thing in this?””
I looked at Elaine.
“What else is there?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Your company has already been transferred.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“That's impossible.””
“Check your records.””
The call ended.
I immediately contacted our company's chief financial officer, Rebecca Turner.
She answered quickly.
“Arthur, I've been trying to reach you.””
“What happened?””
“There's an emergency.””
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me.””
“Someone submitted a resolution changing the voting control of Carter Holdings. The document claims Michael has authority to act as the controlling representative.””
“Did you approve it?””
“No. I refused to process it.””
“Good.””
Rebecca hesitated.
“But there's a problem.””
“What problem?””
“Michael has already called an extraordinary board meeting for tomorrow morning.””
I closed my eyes.
“What is the agenda?””
Rebecca lowered her voice.
“Removal of Arthur Carter as chairman.””
I looked at Daniel.
He had heard every word.
May you like
Then Rebecca added something that made my heart stop.
“And he's proposing Daniel as your replacement.””
