Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Agreement
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Michael Carter.
My younger brother.
The man who had stood beside me when I married Elaine thirty-eight years earlier. The man who had carried Daniel on his shoulders when he was a little boy. The man who had once told me that family was the only thing in life worth protecting.
His signature was unmistakable.
I had seen it thousands of times.
Daniel held the paper as though it might burn his fingers.
“Dad, tell me this isn't Uncle Michael's signature.””
I took the document from him.
“It is.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“That's not what you think.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me what it means.””
She glanced toward the guests, then toward Detective Hayes.
“Michael was helping us with financial planning. That's all.””
“Financial planning?”” Daniel repeated.
“Why would my uncle write that my mother must never discover an agreement?””
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
“Because your father was making everything difficult. Michael was trying to help us.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Help you do what?””
Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from behind us.
“Arthur?””
I turned.
Michael was standing near the entrance to the reception tent.
He wore a charcoal suit and a silver tie. His expression was carefully arranged, but I noticed his right hand gripping his phone.
He looked at the photograph.
Then at the document.
And finally at me.
“What is going on?””
I held up the paper.
“You tell me.””
Michael approached slowly.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Vanessa's financial records.””
He looked at her.
For half a second, something passed between them.
Recognition.
Fear.
Then he turned back to me.
“Arthur, this is a misunderstanding. We should discuss it privately.””
“No.””
“Please. Not in front of everyone.””
“You had no problem making arrangements behind my back.””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect Daniel.””
I laughed once.
“From whom?””
“From you.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Uncle Michael, what did you do?””
Michael looked at him with an expression of genuine affection.
“Daniel, you know I have always wanted what's best for you.””
“Did you help Vanessa transfer money from my account?””
“No.””
“Did you help her access Mom's trust?””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Detective Hayes stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, I'm Detective Hayes. I'd like to ask you some questions about your involvement in the financial transactions.””
Michael looked at him.
“Am I being accused of something?””
“I'm gathering information.””
“Then you should speak to my attorney.””
“That is your right.””
Michael turned toward me.
“Arthur, listen to me. You're making a terrible mistake.””
I stared at my brother.
“You signed a document telling someone to keep my wife in the dark.””
“Because Elaine didn't need to be involved.””
“She was the target!””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Not everything is as simple as you think.””
Elaine rose from her chair.
Her dress was still stained with mud. A server had brought her a clean towel, but she hadn't bothered to change.
“Michael,” she said softly.
He turned.
“Elaine. I'm sorry you got hurt.””
She looked at him for a long moment.
“Did you know Vanessa was trying to change the beneficiary on our trust?””
Michael looked down.
“Elaine, I can explain.””
“Did you know?””
He sighed.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“What?””
Michael raised his hands.
“I didn't think anything would happen. Vanessa wanted financial security. She was marrying into a family with substantial assets, and she wanted assurances.””
I felt anger rise through my chest.
“By stealing?””
“I never stole anything.””
“You helped her prepare the paperwork.””
“I reviewed it.””
“Without Elaine's permission.””
Michael looked irritated now.
“Arthur, you have spent your entire life controlling every financial decision in this family. I thought it was time Daniel had something of his own.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I had my own money.””
Michael turned toward him.
“You had sixty thousand dollars sitting in an account earning almost nothing.””
“That doesn't mean you could take it!””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Michael told me Daniel wanted us to have access to the money.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I never said that.””
“You did.””
“When?””
“At dinner. Three weeks ago.””
“I was talking about our future savings!””
Vanessa threw her hands up.
“God, Daniel! Do you expect me to remember every little conversation?””
I watched my son.
He was beginning to understand that the woman he loved had built an entire world around carefully chosen half-truths.
But Michael's involvement raised another question.
Why would my brother risk his relationship with us for Vanessa?
I stepped closer.
“Michael, how much were you paid?””
His expression changed.
“Nothing.””
I pulled another sheet from the folder.
A payment record.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
Transferred from Whitmore Advisory Services into Michael's personal account.
The date was six weeks earlier.
Michael stared at it.
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel whispered, “Uncle Michael?””
Michael rubbed his forehead.
“It was a consulting fee.””
“For what?”” I asked.
“Business advice.””
“About stealing my wife's trust?””
“Watch your mouth, Arthur.””
I took one step closer.
“You took money from the woman who tried to rob my family, and you expect me to watch my mouth?””
Detective Hayes intervened.
“Gentlemen, let's keep this calm.””
Michael straightened his tie.
“I have nothing more to say.””
Then he turned and walked toward the exit.
But before he reached it, Daniel spoke.
“Uncle Michael.””
Michael stopped.
Daniel held up the handwritten note.
“Why does this say my mother must never discover the real agreement?””
Michael didn't turn around immediately.
When he finally did, his face had lost its usual confidence.
“Because your mother would never have agreed to it.””
“What agreement?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head violently.
“Don't.””
He ignored her.
“Daniel, you need to understand something. The wedding was never just about the wedding.””
I felt a cold sensation move through me.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked directly at me.
“It means Vanessa was supposed to become part of the Carter family for a reason.””
Then he reached into his jacket, removed his phone, and showed Daniel a photograph.
It was a scanned document.
At the top were the words:

*CARTER FAMILY PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*
And beneath them was a signature that looked exactly like mine.
