Chapter 8: The Power of Attorney
Daniel stared at his name.
“No.””
Gregory adjusted his tie.
“Mr. Carter, the document was prepared under your authority.””
“I never authorized anything.””
Gregory looked almost sympathetic.
“Your signature appears on the accompanying instructions.””
Daniel grabbed the paper.
The signature looked similar to his own.
But he had never seen the document.
“That's not my signature.””
Gregory shrugged.
“Then you'll have an opportunity to establish that.””
Detective Hayes took the document from him.
“Mr. Mills, where did this come from?””
“It's a copy of the authorization package.””
“Who holds the original?””
Gregory hesitated.
“I believe Michael Carter has it.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Gregory closed his briefcase.
“He was coordinating the transaction.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What transaction?””
Gregory turned toward him.
“The arrangement involved placing your parents' property into a family holding structure. The intention was to protect the property from future financial complications and ensure that it eventually passed to you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By removing our names from our own house?””
“Not exactly.””
“Then explain it.””
Gregory opened the document again.
“Under the proposed arrangement, your parents would retain certain occupancy rights. Daniel would become the designated beneficiary, while the property would be managed through a separate legal entity.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Who controls the entity?””
Gregory looked down.
“Whitmore Advisory Services.””
I felt Elaine's hand tighten around mine.
Patricia's company.
The same company that had received payments connected to the suspicious bank transfers.
Daniel stepped toward Gregory.
“You're telling me my parents' house would be controlled by my future mother-in-law's company?””
“Temporarily.””
“Why?””
“Administrative convenience.””
“That makes no sense!””
Gregory sighed.
“Mr. Carter, the structure was designed to benefit everyone involved.””
I looked at him.
“Who benefits from a two-million-dollar property being placed under the control of a company owned by Patricia Whitmore?””
Gregory didn't answer.
Detective Hayes intervened.
“Mr. Mills, I need you to explain the purpose of the document and identify everyone who participated in preparing it.””
Gregory looked uncomfortable.
“I'd prefer to speak with my attorney.””
“That's your right.””
He closed his briefcase.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
“Why is my signature on it?””
Gregory glanced toward Vanessa.
She was watching us from beside the entrance.
“Your fiancée provided the necessary personal information.””
Daniel slowly turned.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, I didn't forge anything.””
“Did you provide my signature?””
“No.””
“Did you send them my bank information?””
She looked away.
“Michael said it was necessary.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Michael said?””
“He told me you wanted everything arranged before the wedding.””
“I never agreed to this!””
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
“You don't understand how much work I did to make this happen.””
“What work?””
She looked around.
Then she spoke quietly.
“I had to coordinate with Michael, Gregory, the lawyers, and the property company. Everything was almost finished.””
My blood ran cold.
“You coordinated a plan to take our house?””
“I was trying to secure our future!””
“Your future?”” Elaine asked.
Vanessa looked at her.
“You and Arthur have more than enough money. Daniel is your only son. What happens to everything when you're gone?””
Elaine stared at her.
“Do you really think we should be planning our deaths so you can have a better lifestyle?””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You're making me sound terrible.””
“No,” Elaine said.
“Your actions are doing that.””
Patricia finally approached.
“Vanessa, stop talking.””
But Vanessa ignored her.
“Mom, I'm tired of everyone treating me like a criminal. We were supposed to be a family!””
Daniel looked at her.
“Families don't forge signatures.””
She started crying again.
“I didn't know the documents were wrong!””
Gregory suddenly interrupted.
“That's not entirely accurate.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You personally requested that the beneficiary information be changed twice.””
Vanessa froze.
Gregory continued.
“And you specifically asked whether the arrangement could be completed before the wedding.””
She shook her head.
“That's not true.””
“I have the correspondence.””
Detective Hayes stepped forward.
“Mr. Mills, preserve those records. We'll need copies through the appropriate process.””
Gregory nodded.
Then he made a mistake.
He looked at Daniel and said, “You should ask your uncle why he insisted that the property remain under Patricia's company's control even after the marriage.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?””
Gregory seemed to realize what he'd said.
He quickly closed his briefcase.
But the damage was done.
I stepped closer.
“Why would Michael insist on that?””
Gregory remained silent.
I repeated the question.
“Why?””
He finally answered.
“Because he believed you would never voluntarily transfer the property to Daniel.””
I stared at him.
“And what did he plan to do?””
Gregory looked toward the exit.
“I can't speak for Michael.””
Detective Hayes asked him to remain available for further questions.
Then Daniel walked toward Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth. Did you ever love me?””
She looked shocked.
“Of course I did.””
“Then why would you do this?””
“I wanted a secure life with you.””
“You already had me.””
Her expression hardened.
“You say that as if love pays the bills.””
Daniel looked almost physically wounded.
“I have a good job. We could have built our own life.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand. Your family has assets worth millions. You were going to inherit everything eventually.””
“Eventually,” he repeated.
She looked away.
“You were supposed to help me get there.””
I watched my son slowly remove the last illusion he had about the woman he intended to marry.
He looked at Detective Hayes.
“I want to make a formal statement.””
Hayes nodded.
“That's your decision.””
Daniel took a breath.
“I never authorized anyone to access my account, transfer my money, or prepare documents involving my parents' property.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, don't.””
He looked at her.
“I'm done.””
For a moment, she appeared speechless.
Then she turned toward me.
“You think you've won?””
I said nothing.
She moved closer.
“You've ruined my wedding, embarrassed my mother, and destroyed my relationship. But you still don't know what Michael has.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa smiled through her tears.
“Ask him about the original Carter trust.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
The trust.
The one Elaine had managed for twenty years.
The one containing assets that had never been part of the family business.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Your wife wasn't the only one who signed something last November.””
Then she walked away.
Detective Hayes immediately followed her.
I turned toward Elaine.
She was staring at the floor.
“Arthur,” she whispered.
“What is it?””
“There was another document.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What document?””
She looked at me.
“Michael said it was only an update to the trust.””
I gripped the back of the chair.
“What did it say?””
Elaine's eyes filled.
“I don't remember everything. But I remember one sentence.””
She swallowed.
“It said that if either of us became unable to manage our affairs, Michael would have temporary authority over the trust.””
I stared at her.
“Temporary authority?””
She nodded.
“That's what he told me.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Dad, what does that mean?””
I didn't answer.
Because I suddenly understood why Michael had been so determined to keep Elaine quiet.
He hadn't simply wanted the house.
He had wanted control of everything.
And if the trust document was genuine, my brother might already have the legal authority to access our most valuable assets.
My phone rang.
The screen displayed an unfamiliar number.
I answered.
“Arthur Carter.””
A woman's voice responded.
“Mr. Carter, my name is Susan Bell. I'm the senior manager at First National Bank.””
I straightened.
“Yes?””
“I'm calling regarding a document recently presented to our trust administration department.””
“What document?””
There was a pause.
“An application to activate the emergency trustee authority under your family trust.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who submitted it?””
May you like
Another pause.
“Your brother, Michael Carter.””
