Chapter 5: My Signature on a Document I Never Signed
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“Dad, is that your signature?””
I didn't answer immediately.
The document looked official.
It carried my full legal name, the name of my family holding company, and a signature that appeared to be mine.
But I had never signed it.
I knew because the document supposedly transferred control of Carter Holdings to a new management structure.
And I had never authorized such a transfer.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked Michael.
He put his phone away.
“It's part of the agreement Vanessa was discussing.””
“What agreement?””
“The one that would give Daniel control of the family business.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Dad owns the business.””
“Not forever,” Michael replied.
I felt the room grow colder.
My company had been built over thirty years. It started with a small commercial construction firm and eventually expanded into property management, logistics, and several investment partnerships.
Daniel had never shown much interest in running it.
He had studied marketing and spent the last five years working for a technology company.
I had never forced him to join the family business.
But I had always intended to leave him something substantial.
Michael knew that.
He also knew the company was worth far more than the money in our personal accounts.
I looked at the document again.
“Who prepared this?””
Michael shrugged.
“An attorney.””
“Which attorney?””
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember the attorney who supposedly prepared a document transferring control of a multimillion-dollar company?””
Michael's expression hardened.
“Arthur, you're not going to bully me into giving you answers.””
Detective Hayes stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, may I see the photograph?””
Michael hesitated before handing over his phone.
Hayes examined it.
“Do you have the original document?””
Michael shook his head.
“Not with me.””
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“Michael, stop talking.””
He turned toward her.
“You should have thought about that before dragging me into this.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Both of you knew about this?””
Vanessa began crying again.
“Daniel, I wanted to build a secure future with you.””
“By transferring Dad's company?””
“Your father was going to retire eventually!””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Michael said the business would eventually belong to you anyway.””
I looked at my brother.
“Did you tell her that?””
Michael sighed.
“Arthur, you need to understand the situation. You have been holding everything together for years. The company is too large for one man to manage indefinitely.””
“That doesn't give you the right to forge my signature.””
“I didn't forge anything.””
“Then explain why it's on a document I never signed.””
Michael looked toward the exit.
Detective Hayes noticed.
“Mr. Carter, I'd appreciate it if you remained available while we review these records.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this time.””
“Then I'm leaving.””
He walked away.
Nobody stopped him.
But I watched him disappear through the reception entrance, and I knew this wasn't finished.
Daniel turned toward me.
“Dad, why didn't you tell me the company was being targeted?””
“Because I didn't know.””
“You knew about Vanessa's bank activity.””
“Yes.””
“But not this?””
“No.””
He looked down at the papers.
“I thought Uncle Michael was helping us.””
“So did I.””
Elaine approached her son.
“Daniel, sweetheart, come sit down.””
He shook his head.
“Mom, I'm sorry.””
She gently touched his cheek.
“I know.””
“No, you don't. I watched you fall, and I didn't help you.””
Elaine's eyes filled.
“I was more frightened by your reaction than by the fall.””
Daniel lowered his head.
For a moment, I thought he might break down.
Then Vanessa walked toward him.
“Daniel, we need to talk.””
He stepped away.
“Not now.””
“I'm your fiancée.””
“Not now, Vanessa.””
She looked at Detective Hayes.
“This is ridiculous. We haven't even gotten married.””
Hayes remained composed.
“Ms. Whitmore, nobody has suggested that marriage has taken place.””
Vanessa looked furious.
I almost felt sorry for the guests.
They had arrived expecting champagne and dancing.
Instead, they were watching a family unravel.
Melissa approached me again.
“Mr. Carter, I'm sorry, but the venue manager needs to know whether we should proceed with dinner.””
I looked at the tables.
The place cards.
The expensive arrangements.
The cake.
“Cancel the reception.””
She nodded immediately.
“I'll notify the kitchen.””
Vanessa spun around.
“You can't cancel my wedding!””
I looked at her.
“I'm not cancelling your wedding. I'm refusing to finance it.””
“Everyone is here!””
“Then perhaps you should explain to them why.””
Her face turned red.
“You promised Daniel!””
“I promised my son a wedding celebration. I didn't promise to fund a financial scheme.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad, please. Can we stop?””
I turned toward him.
“You're still worried about the wedding?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at his mother.
Finally, he shook his head.
“No. I'm worried about what else I don't know.””
That was the first sensible thing he had said all afternoon.
Detective Hayes approached with a business card.
“Mr. Carter, I need you and your wife to come to the station tomorrow. We may need additional statements and copies of the original financial documents.””
“Of course.””
He turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, I'd also like to speak with you privately about the transfer from your personal account.””
Daniel nodded.
“I'll cooperate.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
“Daniel, don't.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Why?””
She released him.
“I just think you should speak to your lawyer first.””
“Why would I need a lawyer to explain my own bank account?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
I saw the caller's name.
*GREGORY MILLS.*
The financial consultant.
She declined the call.
It rang again.
She declined it a second time.
Then a message appeared.
I couldn't read the entire message from where I stood.
But I saw the first line.
You need to get the original contract before Arthur finds out about the property clause.
My heart stopped.
Property clause.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What property clause?””
She quickly locked her phone.
“Nothing.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Let me see that message.””
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“It's private!””
I held out my hand.
“Detective.””
Hayes turned toward us.
“What's happening?””
I pointed to Vanessa's phone.
“There's apparently an original contract with a property clause.””
Hayes looked at Vanessa.
“Ms. Whitmore, would you be willing to provide the message?””
She clutched the phone.
“I don't have to show you anything.””
“That's correct. We can discuss the appropriate legal process.””
Vanessa looked at Patricia.
Her mother had gone completely silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Vanessa, what property?””
She looked at him.
For the first time, her tears stopped.
“Your father's house.””
I felt my blood run cold.
Our family home.
The house Elaine and I had bought when Daniel was three years old.
The house where we had celebrated birthdays, Christmas mornings, graduations, and thirty-eight wedding anniversaries.
“What about my house?”” I asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
“It's part of the agreement.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What agreement?””
May you like
She looked directly at me.
“The one your brother said you had already signed.””
