Chapter 10: The Woman Claire Chose
“Don't let her show him the original!””
Vanessa's scream echoed through the abandoned factory.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Margaret stood in the doorway, clutching a brown leather folder against her chest. Daniel still held his gun, but his arm had begun to shake.
I looked from Margaret to Vanessa.
“What original?””
Vanessa stepped toward Margaret.
“Give it to me.””
Margaret shook her head.
“Not this time.””
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
“I know exactly what I'm doing. I should have done it six years ago.””
Vanessa's expression turned vicious.
“You signed the papers yourself!””
Margaret flinched.
I turned toward her.
“What papers?””
She looked at me, tears gathering in her eyes.
“The original guardianship agreement.””
I stared.
“You helped her?””
Margaret lowered her head.
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
She had been Claire's private nurse. Someone my wife trusted. Someone who had stood beside her during the final days of her life.
“You helped Vanessa take my children?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I thought I was protecting them.””
“From whom?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“From the people who wanted to use them.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Don't pretend you were innocent, Margaret. You were paid.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes. I was paid.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I stepped toward her.
“Tell me everything.””
Margaret opened the folder.
Inside was an original legal agreement bearing Claire's signature, a notarized medical authorization, and a handwritten statement.
She held the handwritten statement toward me.
I recognized Claire's writing immediately.
I, Claire Carter, appoint Amara Lewis as the temporary guardian of my children should I become unable to care for them.
My eyes moved to the date.
Three days before Claire died.
I looked at Margaret.
“Why Amara?””
“Because Claire believed she was the only person who would put the children before money.””
I glanced toward Daniel.
He looked away.
Margaret continued.
“Your wife had discovered that Vanessa and Daniel were working together. She knew they were trying to gain control of the family trust. She also knew they had access to documents that could make them appear legally entitled to the children.””
“Then why didn't she come to me?””
Margaret looked directly at me.
“She tried.””
I said nothing.
“She called your office. She sent messages. She asked Daniel to bring you to the hospital.””
Margaret's voice cracked.
“But Daniel told her you were too busy.””
I turned toward my brother.
He didn't deny it.
Margaret continued.
“Claire eventually understood that the people closest to her were the ones she couldn't trust. So she made a second arrangement.””
She pointed toward Amara's name.
“Mrs. Carter placed the children under Amara's protection. She also transferred control of a separate family trust to her, with strict instructions that it could only be used for the children's welfare.””
I stared at the document.
“Amara was supposed to become their guardian?””
“Only if something happened to you as well.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Margaret nodded.
“Claire was afraid you would be targeted after her death. She believed Vanessa and Daniel might try to eliminate anyone who stood between them and the inheritance.””
I felt my stomach turn.
Vanessa took another step forward.
“This is nonsense. Amara was a housekeeper. Claire was emotional and sick. She didn't understand what she was signing.””
Margaret looked at her.
“She understood perfectly.””
“You were the one who told me the papers were invalid!””
“I was wrong.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You promised me!””
Margaret's voice became stronger.
“I promised Claire I would protect her children. I failed her once. I won't fail them again.””
Daniel suddenly lowered his gun.
“Vanessa, this is over.””
She turned toward him.
“Shut up.””
“We can still surrender.””
“You think you can surrender?”” she snapped.
“After everything you've done?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Marcus, I'm sorry.””
I almost laughed.
“You're sorry?””
He nodded.
“I made a terrible mistake.””
“You helped steal my children.””
“I know.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe Claire died without leaving anything behind.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I know.””
I stepped closer.
“Then put the gun down and help me get Leo out of here.””
Daniel looked at the weapon in his hand.
Then he slowly placed it on the floor.
Vanessa screamed.
“Daniel!””
He backed away.
“I'm done.””
For one brief moment, I believed the nightmare might finally end.
Then Vanessa reached into her handbag.
Margaret shouted.
“Marcus!””
I turned just as Vanessa pulled out a small pistol.
Daniel lunged toward her.
A gunshot exploded.
Leo screamed.
I threw myself over my son, shielding his body with mine.
Daniel collapsed against the machinery.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Vanessa stood frozen, the pistol still in her hand.
The sound of police sirens filled the distance.
Detective Harris and his officers rushed into the factory.
“Drop the weapon!””
Vanessa looked around.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that she had lost control.
She dropped the pistol.
Two officers immediately restrained her.
I held Leo tightly.
“Are you hurt?””
He shook his head, crying.
“Daddy, Uncle Daniel…”
I looked toward my brother.
He was lying on the concrete, struggling to breathe.
I ran toward him.
“Daniel!””
He opened his eyes.
“Marcus…”
“Stay with me.””
He tried to smile.
“I didn't know she'd shoot.””
“Don't talk.””
His hand grabbed my wrist.
“There's something else.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
He struggled to breathe.
“Claire didn't have two children.””
I froze.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel's eyes moved toward Margaret.
Then toward the folder.
“She had three.””
My blood ran cold.
Before I could ask another question, his eyes closed.
Paramedics rushed in.
They lifted him onto a stretcher and carried him away.
I stood there, unable to move.
Three children.
Not two.
Not Leo and Ethan.
Three.
Vanessa was being escorted past me when she suddenly stopped.
She looked at me with a strange, almost triumphant smile.
“You still don't know where the third one is.””
I stepped toward her.
“Where is that child?””
She leaned closer.
“Ask Amara.””
Then the officers pulled her away.
I turned toward the doorway.
Amara was standing beside Margaret.
Her face had gone completely white.
And for the first time since I had known her, she looked as though she was afraid of me.
“Amara,” I said quietly.
She shook her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“How many children did Claire have?””
Tears ran down her cheeks.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“Three.””
