Chapter 11: The Child Nobody Was Allowed to Name
The hospital emergency department was crowded when we arrived.
Daniel was taken into surgery.
Leo sat beside me in a private waiting room, wrapped in a blanket. Ethan sat on his other side, holding the photograph of Claire.
The two boys had barely spoken.
They kept looking at each other as though they were trying to understand why they had the same eyes.
Amara stood near the window.
She hadn't sat down once.
I approached her.
“Tell me about the third child.””
She closed her eyes.
“His name was Noah.””
I stared at her.
“Another boy?””
She nodded.
“Claire gave birth to three children?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Amara took a slow breath.
“They were triplets.””
I sat down heavily.
Everything I thought I knew about my family was collapsing.
“Why did nobody tell me?””
“Because one of the babies was taken before you arrived.””
I looked at Margaret.
She nodded slowly.
“Claire gave birth prematurely. The doctors were fighting to save all three children. They placed them in separate incubators.””
I remembered that night.
Daniel had called me from the hospital.
He had told me Claire was stable and that I should finish my business meeting before flying home.
I had believed him.
“I was in London,” I whispered.
Amara nodded.
“You were supposed to arrive that morning.””
“But I didn't.””
“No.””
“What happened to Noah?””
Margaret took a seat opposite me.
“His condition was the most critical. He needed immediate specialist treatment. The hospital arranged a transfer.””
“To where?””
“That's what we were never able to establish.””
I looked at Amara.
“You said Claire knew about the transfer.””
“She did. But she didn't know where they were taking him.””
“Then why did she write about three children?””
Amara walked toward the window.
“Because she discovered that someone had deliberately removed Noah's medical identification.””
I felt sick.
“Someone wanted him to disappear.””
She nodded.
“Mrs. Carter believed Vanessa had arranged it.””
I looked at the boys.
Ethan was asleep against the chair.
Leo was awake, watching us.
I lowered my voice.
“Does he know?””
Amara looked toward him.
“Not yet.””
I sat beside Leo.
“Buddy, can I ask you something?””
He nodded.
“Do you remember anything about the hospital when you were born?””
He frowned.
“No.””
“That's okay.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Is he really my brother?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
I swallowed.
“Because I didn't know.””
Leo looked down at his dinosaur.
“Mom knew?””
I nodded.
“She did.””
He was quiet for a long time.
Then he asked:
“Did she know about Noah too?””
I looked at Amara.
She nodded.
“Yes, sweetheart. Your mother loved all three of you.””
Leo leaned against me.
“Then we have to find him.””
I wrapped my arm around his shoulders.
“We will.””
A nurse entered the room.
“Mr. Carter?””
I stood.
“Is my brother alive?””
“He's out of surgery. The bullet missed his heart, but he has significant internal injuries. He's stable for now.””
I closed my eyes.
“Can I see him?””
“Briefly.””
I looked at Amara.
“Stay with the boys.””
She nodded.
Daniel was in intensive care.
His face was pale, and several monitors surrounded his bed.
When he saw me, he tried to sit up.
“Don't,” I said.
He swallowed.
“Did you find Noah?””
I froze.
“Not yet.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I can help.””
I pulled a chair closer.
“Then start talking.””
Daniel took a painful breath.
“Vanessa wasn't working alone.””
“I know.””
“No. You don't.””
He closed his eyes.
“There's a man named Victor Hale. He was the lawyer who handled the family trust.””
I recognized the name.
Victor had represented my father for years.
He had attended our wedding.
He had been present at Claire's funeral.
“Victor knew about the triplets?””
Daniel nodded.
“He drafted the original guardianship agreement. He also arranged the transfers.””
“Why?””
“Because Noah was the firstborn.””
I frowned.
“What difference does that make?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father changed the inheritance agreement shortly before he died. The firstborn male child would receive controlling ownership of the family company.””
I stared at him.
“But Claire's trust belonged to Lily.””
“That's separate.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“So Victor wanted control of both?””
“Yes. Vanessa wanted Lily's trust. Victor wanted Noah's inheritance. I wanted money to cover my debts.””
I looked at him.
“And what did you get?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Nothing.””
For a moment, I said nothing.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Did Claire know you were involved?””
Daniel nodded.
“She found out the day before she died.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“What did she say?””
He turned his face toward the ceiling.
“She said she could forgive me for stealing money. But she would never forgive me for taking her children.””
His voice broke.
“She asked me to bring you to her.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you?””
“Because Victor told me if you came home, he would make sure the company collapsed. He said your employees would lose everything.””
“So you chose him.””
Daniel began crying.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“You don't get to call yourself my brother after this.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
I walked toward the door.
Then he spoke again.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“There's a storage unit.””
I turned.
“Where?””
“Beneath the old family estate. Your father had a private room built there.””
“What is inside?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The original birth register. And a photograph of Noah's adoptive parents.””
I stared at him.
“Adoptive parents?””
He nodded.
“Victor arranged for the baby to be placed with a couple who couldn't have children.””
“Where are they?””
“I don't know. But I remember the surname.””
He paused.
“Bennett.””
I felt a chill.
There were hundreds of people with that surname.
Daniel reached for my hand.
“Marcus, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Victor didn't just arrange Noah's disappearance.””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“He arranged Claire's final hospital transfer.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Claire wasn't supposed to die that night.””
I couldn't breathe.
The monitors continued their steady beeping.
Daniel swallowed painfully.
“She was recovering. Her condition had improved. But someone changed her medication.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don't know.””
I stepped closer.
“Daniel, who killed my wife?””
He began crying.
“I think Victor did.””
I left the room feeling as though the ground beneath me had disappeared.
In the hallway, Detective Harris was waiting.
“Mr. Carter, we have news.””
I looked at him.
“About Vanessa?””
“She's being held for questioning. But she has requested immunity in exchange for information.””
“What information?””
Harris handed me a printed statement.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
By the third, my hands were shaking.
Vanessa claimed that she had never intended to keep the children permanently.
She claimed Victor had promised to return them when the inheritance dispute was settled.
But the final paragraph was different.
It stated that Victor had ordered her to conceal the existence of the third child.
And that the child had been placed with a family in another state.
A family whose surname was Bennett.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“Can you find them?””
“We're trying.””
Then his phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
His expression changed.
“Understood.””
He ended the call and looked at me.
“Mr. Carter, we may have found Noah.””
My heart began racing.
“Where?””
“An elementary school in Connecticut.””
I swallowed.
“Is he safe?””
Harris hesitated.
“There's a complication.””
“What?””
“The family raising him has reported him missing.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
“Three days ago.””
The detective lowered his voice.
“And according to their statement, a woman came to collect him.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Claire Carter.””
I felt my knees weaken.
“That is impossible. My wife is dead.””
Harris nodded.
“I know.””
Then he showed me the school security photograph.
A woman was standing beside a little boy.
She had blonde hair.
May you like
A pale coat.
And the unmistakable face of my dead wife.
