Chapter 8: The Man Who Signed My Name
“There's a blue folder under the spare tire.””
Ethan repeated the words, his small fingers twisting the hem of his sweater.
I crouched in front of him.
“Are you sure?””
He nodded.
“I saw Vanessa put it there last week. She told me never to touch it.””
“What was inside?””
“I don't know. But she got angry when I asked.””
Amara exchanged a frightened glance with Margaret.
I looked at Detective Harris, who had arrived moments earlier.
“We need to search Vanessa's car.””
He nodded.
“I'll have an officer check it.””
“No,” I said.
“I want to be there.””
“Mr. Carter, you need to stay with your family.””
“My son has been kidnapped. I am not sitting in this house waiting for someone else to find answers.””
Harris studied me.
Then he agreed to take two officers.
We returned to Vanessa's property shortly after eleven forty-five.
The police had secured the house.
Vanessa was no longer there.
She had been taken to the station for questioning.
Her car stood beneath a covered parking area.
A black luxury SUV.
One officer opened the trunk while another checked the registration.
I crouched beside the rear wheel.
The spare tire compartment was secured with a plastic cover.
We removed it.
Beneath the tire was a flat blue folder.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first document was a bank statement.
The second was a transfer authorization.
The third was a photograph.
I recognized the man immediately.
My younger brother, Daniel.
Daniel Carter.
The person I had trusted to manage my company's finances while I traveled.
The person who had stood beside me at Claire's funeral.
The person who had helped me raise Leo.
I stared at the photograph.
Daniel was standing beside Vanessa outside St. Mary's Hospital.
The date was six years earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
*The agreement is complete. Both children remain under our control.*
I felt nauseated.
Detective Harris took the photograph.
“Do you know this man?””
I couldn't answer.
He looked again.
“Mr. Carter?””
“My brother.””
The detective's expression changed.
“Your brother?””
I nodded.
Daniel had been twenty-nine when Claire died.
He had been working for the family company for several years.
I remembered him visiting Claire in the hospital.
I remembered him telling me everything would be fine.
I remembered him putting a hand on my shoulder and saying I needed to stay strong for Leo.
Had he known?
Had he been part of it?
I opened the folder again.
There was a copy of a wire transfer for $850,000.
The receiving account belonged to a company called Reed Holdings.
The authorization carried my signature.
But the date was the same day I had been in London.
I turned the page.
Another transfer.
Another forged signature.
And another.
The total exceeded three million dollars.
Detective Harris examined the documents.
“This could be evidence of a coordinated financial scheme.””
I looked at him.
“Can you arrest my brother?””
“We need to establish his involvement first.””
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
He sounded annoyed.
“Home. Why?””
“Did you sign documents for Vanessa six years ago?””
Silence.
Then a quiet sigh.
“Marcus, not now.””
“Did you help her take my children?””
His voice changed.
“What are you talking about?””
I looked at the photograph.
“I have the picture, Daniel.””
Another silence.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“You shouldn't have opened the blue folder.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me the truth.””
“Listen to me. Whatever Amara has told you, she's lying.””
“Don't mention her.””
“Marcus, you have no idea what Claire was involved in.””
I gripped the phone.
“What was Claire involved in?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“She was going to destroy the company.””
I stared at the floor.
“She discovered the missing money?””
“She discovered everything.””
“And you helped Vanessa?””
“I was trying to protect the family.””
“You stole my children!””
Daniel raised his voice.
“They were never supposed to be yours!””
The words landed like a gunshot.
I stopped breathing.
“What did you say?””
He realized his mistake.
“Marcus—”
“Explain that.””
“I didn't mean—”
“Were the twins mine?””
He hung up.
I stared at the phone.
Detective Harris had heard enough.
He immediately instructed one officer to locate Daniel.
But I had another problem.
Midnight was approaching.
And Leo was still missing.
I returned home with the folder.
Amara was waiting beside the front door.
“Did you find it?””
I nodded.
“Daniel.””
Her face fell.
“I was afraid of that.””
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“Not everything. But Claire suspected someone close to you was helping Vanessa.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she didn't know whom she could trust.””
I walked into the study.
The photograph of Claire and Leo sat on my desk.
I picked it up.
“Amara, I need to know something. When Claire died, was Daniel at the hospital?””
Amara nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did he visit her alone?””
She hesitated.
“Once.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
Amara sat down.
“I was outside the room. I heard them arguing.””
“About what?””
“I couldn't hear everything. But I heard Mrs. Carter say, ‘You promised Marcus you would protect his children.’”
My chest tightened.
“And Daniel?””
“He said, ‘I promised to protect the company.’”
I stared at her.
Then she continued.
“Mrs. Carter told him the children were more important than the company.””
I looked at the blue folder.
Daniel hadn't simply helped Vanessa.
He had made a choice.
Money over family.
I checked the time.
11:56.
Detective Harris approached me.
“Mr. Carter, we have a problem.””
“What?””
“We traced the message demanding Ethan's return. It came from a phone registered to a deceased individual.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Harris looked at his notes.
“Samuel Hayes.””
The retired doctor.
The man who had signed the transfer records.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Is he alive?””
“According to our records, he died four months ago.””
I stared at him.
“Then who's using his phone?””
Harris didn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
*STOP LOOKING FOR THE BLUE FILE. YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.*
Then another message arrived.
This time, it contained a photograph.
Leo was sitting in a metal chair.
His hands were tied.
Behind him stood a man wearing a dark jacket.
The man's face was partially visible.
I zoomed in.
My blood turned to ice.
It was Daniel.
My brother.
He was standing behind my kidnapped son.
And in his hand was a gun.
I looked at Detective Harris.
“That's my brother.””
Harris immediately called for backup.
But before he could finish, another message appeared.
*COME ALONE, MARCUS. YOUR BROTHER WANTS TO TALK.*
I looked at Amara.
She had seen the photograph.
“Marcus, don't go.””
“I have to.””
“No. This is exactly what they want.””
I took Ethan's hand.
“Then tell me what to do.””
Amara looked at the photograph again.
Then she noticed something in the background.
A faded sign.
She leaned closer.
“That's not the Carson warehouse.””
I turned.
“What?””
“That's the old Carter textile factory.””
I stared at her.
The factory had been closed for more than a decade.
It was the place where my father had built his first business.
And Daniel knew every entrance.
Amara grabbed my arm.
“Marcus, there's something else.””
“What?””
She pointed at the screen.
Behind Daniel, barely visible on the wall, was a painted symbol.
A white bird.
I recognized it.
Claire had used that symbol on every letter she left for our children.
It meant one thing.
Safe.
I looked at Amara.
“Why would Claire's symbol be there?””
May you like
She swallowed.
“Because she hid something inside that factory.””
