Chapter 5: The Boy in the Hospital Records

I ran upstairs.

“Leo!””

My son's bedroom door flew open.

He was sitting upright in bed, frightened by the noise.

“Daddy?””

I rushed to his side and checked the windows.

Closed.

The curtains were still.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

But I knew what I had seen.

Someone had photographed him from inside the room.

“Are you okay?””

Leo nodded slowly.

“Why are you shouting?””

I pulled him into my arms.

“Did anyone come into your room tonight?””

He shook his head.

Then he hesitated.

“Not tonight.””

I pulled back.

“What do you mean?””

Leo looked toward the closet.

“Sometimes Vanessa comes in when I'm asleep.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does she do?””

“She checks my drawers.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“Once she took Mommy's old teddy bear. She said she was looking for something inside it.””

I looked at the closet.

“Did she find anything?””

Leo shook his head.

“She got angry and threw it on the floor.””

I stood.

“Where is the teddy bear?””

He pointed beneath his bed.

I reached down and pulled out a small brown bear with one button eye missing.

It was Claire's favorite gift to him.

I examined its stitching.

Near the back was a small tear.

Something metallic glinted inside.

I carefully opened the loose seam.

A tiny brass key fell into my palm.

I looked at Leo.

“Did your mother put this here?””

He nodded.

“She said it was a secret.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another piece of Claire's life I had never understood.

I tucked the key into my pocket and kissed Leo's forehead.

“I'm going to have someone stay outside your room tonight.””

“Amara?””

“Yes.””

He relaxed.

“Good.””

I went downstairs.

Amara was standing beside the kitchen counter, talking quietly with Margaret.

I showed them the key.

Margaret's eyes widened.

“That's it.””

“What?””

“The key to the hospital archive box.””

She took it carefully.

“Claire gave me a matching key six years ago. I thought she had lost this one.””

I looked at the clock.

It was nearly one in the morning.

“Where is the box?””

Margaret hesitated.

“St. Mary's Hospital. The old maternity records department.””

“Can we go there now?””

“Not without authorization.””

I took out my phone.

“I'll get authorization.””

Twenty minutes later, I had contacted the hospital administrator, explained that I was investigating possible identity fraud involving my deceased wife and children, and arranged an emergency meeting for the following morning.

I barely slept.

At eight, Margaret and I arrived at St. Mary's.

The hospital smelled exactly as I remembered.

Disinfectant.

Coffee.

Cold air.

I hated it.

Every corridor reminded me of Claire's final days.

A records supervisor named Daniel Price met us near the administrative offices.

“Mr. Carter, I understand this is a sensitive matter.””

“It's more than sensitive. Someone may have stolen my child.””

Daniel's expression changed.

He led us into a small records room and locked the door.

Margaret handed him the key.

Daniel opened a metal cabinet and removed a blue archival box.

The label read:

*CARTER FAMILY — MATERNITY RECORDS — CONFIDENTIAL*

My hands began to shake.

Inside were several folders.

One contained Claire's medical records.

Another contained Lily's birth information.

And the third was labeled:

*UNREGISTERED MALE INFANT — NIGHT OF 14 OCTOBER.*

I stared at it.

“Open it.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Mr. Carter, I should explain that some of these documents were amended after the original entries were made.””

“By whom?””

He opened the folder.

The first page showed the birth of a baby boy at 11:42 p.m.

The mother's name was listed as Claire Carter.

The father's name was blank.

But the second page contained an amended record.

The baby's mother had been changed to an unidentified woman.

The child's name had been removed.

I looked at Margaret.

“Was Claire pregnant with twins?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No. She delivered Lily alone.””

“Then whose baby is this?””

Daniel turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

*Male infant transferred under temporary guardianship. Authorization signed by M. Carter.*

My heart stopped.

My initials.

My signature.

Again.

I hadn't signed anything.

I leaned closer.

There was a second name beneath mine.

*Witness: Vanessa Reed.*

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Oh, my God.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who authorized the transfer?””

He checked the file.

“An attending physician named Dr. Samuel Hayes.””

“Is he still here?””

“No. He retired four years ago.””

“Where is he now?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“His current contact information is in the personnel archive.””

I pointed to the record.

“What happened to the baby?””

Daniel turned another page.

A transfer destination appeared.

A private medical facility in Connecticut.

The receiving guardian's name had been blacked out.

But underneath the black marker, faint letters were visible.

I held the page toward the light.

The name began with R.

Margaret whispered, “Reed.””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa?””

“Possibly.””

I pulled out my phone and photographed every page.

Then Daniel handed me one final document.

It was a letter from Claire.

Dated two days before she died.

To the hospital administration,

I did not authorize the transfer of either child. Any document bearing my husband's signature is fraudulent.

I am requesting immediate protection for both babies.

If anything happens to me, please contact Marcus Carter directly.

Beneath it was another handwritten sentence.

*The boy is his.*

I felt my knees weaken.

The boy was mine.

I had a son named Leo.

And apparently, another son.

I stared at the hospital record.

“Where did this baby go?””

Daniel shook his head.

“The trail ends at the private facility.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Find Dr. Hayes.””

She nodded.

We left the hospital shortly before noon.

As I reached my car, a black sedan pulled into the space beside us.

The passenger window lowered.

A man in his early forties looked at me.

I didn't recognize him.

But he recognized me.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

He glanced at Margaret.

Then he leaned closer.

“My name is David Reed.””

The surname hit me immediately.

“Are you related to Vanessa?””

He gave a humorless smile.

“I'm her younger brother.””

I stepped away from the car.

“What do you want?””

David looked around the parking lot.

“I want to tell you what happened to the little boy.””

My heart began racing.

“Where is he?””

David swallowed.

“He's alive.””

“Where?””

He looked down.

Then he said something that made the entire world stop.

“Marcus, the baby Vanessa took wasn't your only child.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

David opened his glove compartment and removed a photograph.

It showed two newborn babies lying side by side.

One wore a yellow blanket.

The other wore a blue one.

“Twins,” he whispered.

“Claire gave birth to twins.””

I felt my legs weaken.

“Where is the second child?””

David looked directly at me.

“Vanessa raised him.””

My breath caught.

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the hospital entrance.

“He's been living in your house.””

I couldn't move.

“That's impossible.””

David shook his head.

“No, Marcus. Think about it. Think about the boy Vanessa has been calling her nephew.””

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Leo's school.

*Emergency contact update: A request has been submitted to change Leo Carter's authorized pickup list.*

The request had been submitted by Vanessa.

And the second name on the list was unfamiliar.

*Ethan Reed.*
