Chapter 3 - The Secret Vanessa Buried For Ten YearsNobody moved.

For ten years, I imagined this moment.
But never like this.
Never in my dreams did I imagine my mother standing outside our front door in the middle of a storm, holding the letters I thought she never wrote.
I had imagined finding her someday.
Maybe in a crowded city.
Maybe in a small town.
Maybe after years of searching.
But I never imagined she would appear because Vanessa’s own lie finally collapsed.
My father stood frozen.
His hand was still on the doorknob.
The rain blew inside, but nobody moved to close the door.
Nobody spoke.
My mother looked at me like she was afraid I would disappear.
Like she was looking at a ghost.
“Lily…”
She said my name softly.
The same way she must have said it when I was little.
A sound from a memory I thought I had lost forever.
I couldn’t move.
My brain told me this wasn’t possible.
My heart told me it was.
Behind my father, Vanessa suddenly whispered:
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
My mother noticed her.
Her expression changed immediately.
“You.”
Vanessa stepped back.
My father looked between them.
“You know each other?”
My mother tightened her grip around the letters.
“I know exactly who she is.”
The room became silent again.
My father looked at me.
Then at my mother.
Then back at Vanessa.
His face was filled with questions he didn’t know how to ask.
“What is happening?”
My mother took a shaky breath.
“I came here because I heard the truth finally came out.”
She looked at the bracelet in my hand.
“And because I knew Vanessa would never confess.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re lying.”
My mother looked at her.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
But stronger than I remembered.
“You’re the one who lied.”
I watched Vanessa’s face.
For years, she had controlled every room she entered.
She smiled.
She manipulated.
She convinced everyone she was the victim.
But now…
She looked small.
My father slowly stepped away from her.
“Tell me everything.”
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Daniel, don’t listen to her.”
My father’s voice became colder.
“I heard your voice.”
She stopped.
“I heard you admit you destroyed letters from my wife.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re really going to believe a woman who disappeared for ten years?”
My mother flinched.
That sentence hurt.
I could see it.
But she didn’t break.
Because she had heard worse.
“I didn’t disappear.”
Everyone looked at her.
My mother lowered her eyes.
“I was forced away.”
My father’s expression changed.
“What?”
She stepped inside slowly.
The door closed behind her.
“I tried to come back.”
She looked at me.
“Every single year.”
My throat tightened.
“But someone made sure you never knew.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.”
My father turned toward her.
“Stop.”
One word.
But it carried everything.
Fear.
Pain.
Betrayal.
Vanessa became quiet.
My mother placed the letters on the table.
“These are the letters I sent.”
My father stared at them.
There were dozens.
Maybe hundreds.
All tied together with an old ribbon.
My name was written on several envelopes.
Lily.
My hands started shaking.
“They were real?”
My mother looked at me.
“Yes.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I wrote to you every week.”
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t I get them?”
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
Vanessa did.
My father picked up one envelope.
His fingers trembled.
“This one…”
He looked at the date.
“Eight years ago.”
My mother nodded.
“I sent it after I found out you were still living in this house.”
My father looked confused.
“You knew where we lived?”
“Yes.”
The room went quiet.
“Then why didn’t you come?”
My mother looked down.
“Because Vanessa threatened me.”
My father froze.
“What?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“She told me if I came near you or Lily, she would make sure you believed I was dangerous.”
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That’s insane.”
My mother looked at her.
“You told me Daniel hated me.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You told me he had moved on.”
She opened another letter.
“You told me Lily forgot me.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“I never forgot you.”
My mother looked at me.
And that broke her.
She covered her mouth.
A small cry escaped.
“I know.”
She whispered.
“I know, baby.”
That was the first time she called me that.
Baby.
A word I had almost forgotten.
My father turned away.
He looked destroyed.
All those years.
All those nights.
All those moments when he probably sat alone believing my mother abandoned us.
Vanessa had built their entire relationship on a lie.
“Why?”
My father whispered.
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa finally lost control.
“Because I loved you!”
Everyone looked at her.
Her perfect mask cracked.
“I loved you, Daniel!”
Her voice became louder.
“I was the one who stayed when she left!”
My mother shook her head.
“I never left.”
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You were gone!”
“Because you made sure I was.”
The argument stopped.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa’s eyes moved between all of us.
For a second, I thought she would admit everything.
Instead, she smiled.
A cold, familiar smile.
“You really think this changes anything?”
My father stared at her.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“She destroyed it.”
My stomach dropped.
Vanessa walked closer.
“Ask your mother why she was gone.”
My mother became silent.
That scared me.
Because for the first time…
She looked afraid.
My father noticed.
“What aren’t you telling us?”
My mother looked at me.
Then at my father.
“I wanted to tell you.”
She whispered.
“But I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a small folder.
Inside was a photograph.
My father took it.
His face changed.
I couldn’t see clearly.
“What is it?”
Nobody answered.
Then my father whispered:
“No…”
Vanessa looked nervous.
My father held the photo tighter.
Because standing beside my mother in the picture…
Was Vanessa.
But she wasn’t wearing the expensive clothes.
She wasn’t smiling.
She looked younger.
And beside her…
Was another man.
A man my father recognized.
The room became silent.
My father slowly looked at Vanessa.
“Who is he?”
Vanessa said nothing.
My mother spoke quietly.
“He was the reason she wanted me gone.”
My father’s breathing changed.
“Daniel…”
Vanessa finally whispered.
“Don’t.”
But it was too late.
Because the truth had only started coming out.
May you like
And the biggest secret…
Was still hidden.
