Chapter 6 - The Family Member Who Betrayed Us

The envelope in the stranger’s hand felt like it contained the weight of my entire life.
Nobody looked away from it.
Not my father.
Not my mother.
Not even Vanessa.
Especially not Vanessa.
Because for the first time since I had known her…
She looked powerless.
The woman who could control every conversation.
The woman who could make my father doubt his own memories.
The woman who convinced everyone she was the victim.
Was standing in the middle of a room full of people who finally saw her fear.
My father stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at him calmly.
“My name is Michael Hayes.”
Vanessa’s face became completely pale.
My father noticed immediately.
“You know him.”
It wasn’t a question.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
My father turned toward her.
“You know him.”
Still nothing.
Then my mother whispered:
“He’s the reason Vanessa tried to erase me.”
My father looked confused.
“Explain.”
Michael looked down at the envelope.
“Before I explain, you need to understand something.”
He looked at me.
“Lily deserves to know the truth.”
My heart started racing.
I hated that sentence.
Because every time someone said “the truth,” it meant my life was about to change again.
First, my mother didn’t abandon me.
Then Vanessa stole our letters.
Now there was something else.
Something bigger.
My father reached for the envelope.
Michael handed it to him.
“Open it.”
My father hesitated.
Then he opened it.
Inside were copies of documents.
Hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Medical reports.
I watched his eyes move across the pages.
At first, he looked confused.
Then shocked.
Then completely broken.
“What is this?”
Nobody answered.
My father looked at my mother.
“What is this?”
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice shook.
“I need you to tell me.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was going to.”
“When?”
She looked at him.
“Before Vanessa found out.”
That sentence made my father freeze.
“Found out what?”
Michael spoke.
“Vanessa discovered the truth years ago.”
My father looked at him.
“What truth?”
Michael took a breath.
“Lily’s birth records were changed.”
The room went silent.
I felt my stomach drop.
My father looked at me.
Then back at Michael.
“What are you saying?”
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“I’m saying Vanessa knew something about Lily that nobody else knew.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Stop.”
Everyone turned.
Her voice was shaking.
“I said stop.”
Michael ignored her.
“She knew Lily’s biological information had been altered.”
My father’s face changed.
“What?”
My mother stepped forward.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
He looked hurt.
“Please.”
My mother started crying.
“I didn’t hide this because I wanted to hurt you.”
My father laughed bitterly.
“Then why?”
She looked at me.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Of losing Lily forever.”
My chest tightened.
I didn’t understand.
My whole life had been built around missing pieces.
And now everyone was telling me there were secrets about me that I never knew existed.
My father held the documents.
“Someone explain this.”
Michael looked at him.
“Years ago, when Lily was born, Vanessa had access to private medical information.”
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Why?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Michael continued.
“She was working at the hospital administration office.”
My mother nodded.
“She helped process records.”
My father stared at Vanessa.
“You had access to my daughter’s files?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I was trying to help.”
Nobody believed her.
Not anymore.
Michael continued.
“She discovered something.”
My father looked down.
“What?”
Michael said quietly:
“The original test results.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
My father slowly looked up.
“What test?”
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That pause was worse than the words.
Finally, he said:
“The test that proved Lily was connected to someone Vanessa never wanted you to know about.”
My father’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Michael looked at me.
And my heart stopped.
“Me.”
Nobody spoke.
The entire house went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
My father looked at Michael.
“No.”
Michael nodded.
“I’m Lily’s biological father.”
The words hit the room like an explosion.
My father stepped back.
My mother covered her mouth.
And Vanessa…
Vanessa smiled.
Not because she was happy.
Because she thought she had finally won.
“There.”
She whispered.
“Now everyone knows.”
My father looked at my mother.
The pain on his face was impossible to describe.
“Is it true?”
My mother couldn’t answer.
That was enough.
My father closed his eyes.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he whispered:
“Ten years.”
My mother started crying.
“Daniel…”
“Ten years I raised her believing…”
His voice broke.
“I loved her.”
I felt tears falling down my face.
Because that was the one thing I knew.
My father was my father.
Blood didn’t change that.
Nothing could change that.
I stepped toward him.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
And immediately his expression softened.
He reached for my hand.
“I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice trembled.
“You’re my dad.”
His eyes filled with tears.
And he hugged me.
For a moment…
Everything else disappeared.
But Vanessa ruined it.
She laughed.
A quiet, cold laugh.
“You see?”
Everyone looked at her.
“This is exactly why I had to protect Daniel.”
My father slowly turned.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
She pointed at my mother.
“She lied to you.”
My mother shook her head.
“No.”
“She let you raise another man’s child.”
My father’s jaw tightened.
“But I raised Lily.”
Vanessa ignored him.
“She knew the truth.”
My father looked at my mother.
“Did you?”
My mother whispered:
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
But before my father could react, she continued.
“I knew after Lily was born.”
Everyone became silent.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
My mother looked down.
“Because I was afraid you would leave her.”
My father stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
My mother cried.
“Because Vanessa threatened me.”
The room changed.
Again.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What?”
My mother opened another document.
“She told me if I told you, she would make sure I never saw Lily again.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“She’s lying.”
Michael stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“I was there.”
Vanessa froze.
Michael continued.
“I heard Vanessa threaten her.”
My father stared.
“When?”
“Three days before Lily disappeared.”
My mother looked at me.
“I didn’t disappear.”
Her voice broke.
“I was taken away from you.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
My father looked horrified.
“What do you mean taken away?”
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“She planned everything.”
Vanessa backed away.
“No.”
“She wanted Daniel to believe you abandoned him.”
“No.”
“She wanted to become Lily’s mother.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know anything.”
Michael shook his head.
“I know enough.”
He pulled out another piece of evidence.
A recording device.
“I recorded our conversation.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?”
Michael pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“You need to disappear.”
My mother’s voice followed.
“Vanessa, please.”
“You have two choices.”
A pause.
“Leave forever…”
Another pause.
“Or I make sure Daniel thinks you abandoned Lily.”
The room became silent.
My father stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“And once you’re gone…”
Vanessa’s voice became clear.
“I’ll finally have the family I deserve.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
My father looked at Vanessa.
Not with love.
Not with confusion.
Only betrayal.
The wedding decorations around them suddenly looked different.
The flowers.
The lights.
The perfect house.
Everything was built on a lie.
Vanessa looked at me.
And for one terrifying second…
I saw the woman I had lived with for ten years.
Not the fake mother.
Not the perfect bride.
The real Vanessa.
She whispered:
“You should never have found those letters.”
My father stepped between us.
“Leave.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“Daniel…”
“Leave my house.”
She looked around.
Like she couldn’t believe she was losing everything.
Then she smiled.
A dangerous smile.
“Fine.”
She grabbed her purse.
“But before I go…”
She looked directly at me.
“There’s something your mother never told you.”
My mother’s face changed.
“Vanessa, don’t.”
Vanessa walked toward the door.
“She knows why you really lost your mother.”
I froze.
My father looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa opened the door.
And before leaving, she said:
“Ask your mother what happened the night Lily was born.”
The door slammed shut.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone knew.
The truth was not finished.
It had only gone deeper.
And somewhere in the past…
May you like
On the night I was born…
Something happened that my mother had spent my entire life trying to hide.
