Chapter 4 - The Secret Hidden In My Birth Records

Nobody even breathed normally.
The photograph was still in my father’s hand.
A simple piece of paper.
A frozen moment from the past.
But somehow it felt heavier than anything I had ever seen.
My father stared at the picture like he was trying to force his mind to accept something it refused to believe.
“Who is he?”
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just broken.
Vanessa looked away.
That was the first time I had ever seen her afraid.
Not annoyed.
Not irritated.
Afraid.
And that told me everything.
Because Vanessa never feared anyone.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not the people who believed her lies.
But now…
She was afraid of the truth.
My mother slowly stepped closer.
“His name was Michael.”
My father looked at her.
“Was?”
My mother nodded.
“He was Vanessa’s fiancé before she met you.”
Everyone became silent.
My father looked confused.
“I don’t understand.”
“You were not the first man she planned a future with.”
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Stop.”
My mother ignored her.
“She was engaged to him when I found out.”
My father looked at Vanessa.
“You told me you had never been married.”
“I wasn’t.”
“But you were engaged.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That doesn’t matter.”
My father laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Nothing matters to you, does it?”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re making this dramatic.”
My mother looked at her.
“You always did that.”
“Did what?”
“Made everyone believe their feelings were the problem.”
Those words hit harder than shouting.
Because they were true.
I had lived with Vanessa for ten years.
I knew exactly how she worked.
She never screamed when people were watching.
She never acted cruel in front of my father.
She saved her real personality for moments when nobody could protect me.
Like the staircase.
Like today.
Like every time she reminded me that my mother was gone.
My father looked at the photograph again.
“Why did you hide this?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.”
Her jaw tightened.
“I didn’t think it was important.”
My father stared at her.
“You built our entire relationship on secrets.”
She looked at him.
“You loved me.”
“Yes.”
His answer came immediately.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because I knew he meant it.
“But I loved the person I thought you were.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked like she realized she was losing everything.
She stepped toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“No.”
The word was calm.
But final.
“I have spent ten years listening to you.”
He pointed toward the letters.
“Ten years believing my wife abandoned our daughter.”
His voice cracked.
“Ten years watching Lily grow up thinking she wasn’t wanted.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
There were birthdays when I secretly wished my mother would appear.
School events where I looked at other children with their mothers.
Christmas mornings when I wondered if she remembered me.
And every time…
Vanessa was there.
Whispering the same lie.
“She chose not to come.”
My father looked at my mother.
“Why didn’t you fight harder?”
The question was quiet.
But painful.
My mother looked down.
“I did.”
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Police reports.
Emails.
Court papers.
My father’s expression changed.
“What is this?”
“Proof.”
She handed him the first page.
“I tried to contact you.”
Another page.
“I filed complaints.”
Another.
“I hired a lawyer.”
My father flipped through them quickly.
Then he stopped.
His eyes locked on one sentence.
“What does this mean?”
My mother took a breath.
“It means Vanessa changed my address without my permission.”
My father looked up.
“What?”
“She redirected my letters.”
My fingers went cold.
“She didn’t just throw them away.”
My mother looked at Vanessa.
“She made sure they never reached you.”
The room became silent.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s impossible.”
My mother smiled sadly.
“No.”
She pointed at the documents.
“You forgot one thing.”
“What?”
“You used your real name when you signed the request.”
My father looked down.
There was a copy of a form.
A handwriting sample.
A signature.
Vanessa’s signature.
My father stared at it.
His face slowly changed.
“No…”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, I can explain.”
“No.”
His voice became louder.
“You cannot explain this.”
She stopped.
“You stole my wife’s letters.”
“I was protecting you.”
My father looked disgusted.
“Protecting me?”
“Yes!”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“She was going to destroy everything!”
My mother frowned.
“Destroy what?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You.”
A cold silence followed.
My father looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Only for a second.
But everyone noticed.
My mother noticed.
I noticed.
My father noticed.
“What did you know?”
Vanessa looked away.
My father stepped closer.
“What did you know about my wife?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Answer me!”
The house shook with his voice.
For years, I had never seen my father lose control.
Not once.
But now…
The man who always stayed calm was finally breaking.
Vanessa whispered:
“She wasn’t supposed to come back.”
My heart stopped.
My mother looked at her.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa said nothing.
My father grabbed the photograph.
“Tell me.”
The room waited.
Finally, Vanessa spoke.
“She found out.”
My father frowned.
“Found out what?”
Vanessa looked at my mother.
Then at me.
And smiled.
A small, cruel smile.
“She found out Lily wasn’t the only thing you were lied to about.”
My father froze.
“What?”
Nobody understood.
Except Vanessa.
She looked almost relieved.
Like she had been holding onto this secret for years.
My mother’s face became pale.
“Vanessa…”
My father turned toward her.
“What is she talking about?”
My mother closed her eyes.
And that scared me.
Because my mother had faced Vanessa.
She had faced losing ten years with me.
She had faced being called a liar.
But now…
She looked terrified.
“Mom?”
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.”
My father’s voice dropped.
“Tell us what?”
My mother slowly opened her mouth.
But before she could speak…
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
His face was familiar.
Too familiar.
Vanessa looked at him.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
My father noticed.
“Who are you?”
The man looked directly at Vanessa.
Then at my father.
Then at me.
And said the words that changed everything.
“I’m here because Vanessa never told you the truth about Lily’s birth.”
My entire body went cold.
My father looked at me.
“What?”
The stranger stepped inside.
Rainwater fell from his coat onto the marble floor.
“I have proof.”
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
The man reached into his pocket.
And pulled out a sealed envelope.
“I have the original records.”
My father stared at it.
“What records?”
The man looked at me.
Then said:
“The records that prove why Vanessa was willing to destroy your family.”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The staircase.
The letters.
The lies.
The wedding.
Everything had only been the beginning.
May you like
And now…
The biggest secret of all was finally coming home.
