Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Wanted To Become My Mother

The words stayed in the room long after Michael said them.

“Someone inside this family helped Vanessa.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody wanted to believe it.

Because betrayal hurts differently when it comes from a stranger.

A stranger disappoints you.

But family?

Family destroys the place where you thought you were safe.

My father slowly looked around the living room.

At the walls.

At the furniture.

At the photographs hanging in the hallway.

Ten years of memories.

Ten years of believing this house was built on love.

Now he wasn’t sure what was real anymore.

“Who?” my father asked.

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

That silence made everyone nervous.

“Michael.”

My father’s voice became firm.

“Tell me.”

Michael looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“I need you to understand something.”

My father clenched his jaw.

“I’m tired of understanding.”

The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.

“I spent ten years believing the woman I loved abandoned me and my daughter.”

He looked toward the door where Vanessa had disappeared.

“She destroyed my family.”

Then he looked at Michael.

“If someone helped her, I deserve to know.”

Michael nodded.

“You’re right.”

He reached into his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a small black notebook.

“This belonged to Vanessa.”

My mother looked surprised.

“Where did you get that?”

“I found it years ago.”

My father frowned.

“Why didn’t you show me?”

Michael looked down.

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.”

Nobody spoke.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

For ten years, Vanessa had created an environment where nobody trusted anyone.

She made my mother look like a liar.

She made my father believe he was abandoned.

She made me believe I wasn’t wanted.

Michael opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Plans.

My father took it.

The first page immediately changed his expression.

“What is this?”

My mother stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

My father read silently.

Then his face turned pale.

“It says she was watching our family.”

Michael nodded.

“She was documenting everything.”

I looked at the notebook.

“Why?”

Michael answered:

“Because Vanessa didn’t see people as family.”

He paused.

“She saw them as obstacles.”

My father turned another page.

Then suddenly stopped.

“What?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

Everyone looked at him.

He slowly turned the notebook around.

There was a name written in the middle of the page.

A name I recognized.

My aunt.

My father’s sister.

“Rachel?”

My father looked completely confused.

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

My father looked at Michael.

“Are you saying my sister helped Vanessa?”

Michael nodded.

“I believe she did.”

I couldn’t believe it.

Aunt Rachel.

The woman who brought me birthday gifts.

The woman who hugged me.

The woman who always said she loved me.

My father shook his head.

“No.”

Michael stayed silent.

“No.”

My father repeated.

“She wouldn’t.”

My mother looked at him sadly.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

He looked angry now.

“She was there for Lily.”

I felt tears forming.

Because I remembered.

Aunt Rachel was one of the few people who defended Vanessa.

Whenever I complained about Vanessa being cold, Rachel always told me:

“You need to be patient. Vanessa is trying.”

Trying.

That word suddenly sounded different.

Michael opened the notebook again.

“There are recordings too.”

My father froze.

“Recordings?”

“Yes.”

Michael took out a small device.

“I recovered them from an old storage unit.”

My father stared.

“Play them.”

Michael pressed a button.

At first, there was static.

Then voices.

Vanessa.

And Rachel.

My entire body became tense.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

“I don’t think Daniel will ever leave Lily.”

Vanessa answered:

“He will.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“You sound very confident.”

Vanessa replied:

“Because I know him.”

A pause.

“He feels guilty.”

My father’s face changed.

Rachel asked:

“About what?”

Vanessa answered:

“About losing Lily’s mother.”

The room became silent.

The recording continued.

“That guilt makes him easy to control.”

Rachel laughed.

“You really thought this through.”

Vanessa responded:

“I had to.”

A pause.

“I didn’t spend years waiting to lose everything.”

My father looked sick.

Then Rachel asked:

“What about the girl?”

Vanessa answered immediately.

“Lily?”

“Yes.”

A few seconds of silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“She’s just a child.”

My hands started shaking.

Rachel asked:

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa’s voice became cold.

“It means children forget.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

My father slowly sat down.

The man who had survived losing his wife.

The man who had protected me.

The man who had always believed people were good.

Looked completely broken.

“She knew.”

He whispered.

“She knew everything.”

My mother sat beside him.

“Daniel…”

He shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“All these years…”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I failed you.”

My mother started crying.

“You didn’t.”

“But I did.”

He looked toward me.

“I failed Lily.”

I immediately shook my head.

“No, Dad.”

He looked at me.

“You believed someone else’s lie.”

I stepped closer.

“But you still loved me.”

That broke him.

He pulled me into his arms.

And for the first time since my mother came back…

I felt like the family I lost was slowly coming together again.

But the moment didn’t last.

Because Michael’s phone rang.

Again.

He looked at the screen.

This time, his expression changed completely.

“What?”

My father noticed.

“What happened?”

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s Vanessa.”

Everyone froze.

“She wants to meet.”

My father laughed bitterly.

“After everything?”

Michael shook his head.

“She says she has proof.”

My mother looked worried.

“Proof of what?”

Michael looked at me.

“Proof that the story we know isn’t the entire truth.”

My father stood.

“Another lie?”

Michael hesitated.

“No.”

He looked serious.

“She says she knows something about Lily’s mother.”

My mother became pale.

“What?”

Michael looked at her.

“She says she knows why you disappeared.”

The room went silent.

My father looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?”

My mother didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because my mother had faced Vanessa.

She had faced losing ten years with me.

She had faced being called a liar.

But now…

She looked terrified.

I stepped toward her.

“Mom?”

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“There is something I never told you.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

She looked at the old letters.

Then at me.

“The night I disappeared…”

Her voice broke.

“I wasn’t running from Vanessa.”

She paused.

“I was running from something much worse.”

Nobody moved.

My father whispered:

“What?”

My mother looked toward the window.

The rain continued falling outside.

Then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“I saw someone trying to hurt Lily.”

The room went completely silent.

Because suddenly…

The biggest secret was no longer about Vanessa.

It was about the night my mother lost me.

May you like

And the person who caused it…

Was still somewhere close.
