Chapter 2 - EMMA HAD A BROTHER I WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO MEET

Nathan arrived with an attorney two hours later.

He looked like Emma.

Not exactly.

But enough.

Same dark eyes.

Same narrow face.

Same habit of pressing lips together before answering difficult questions.

I hated him immediately for reminding me of her.

Then hated myself for that.

He sat across from Detective Hayes.

“My full name is Nathan Elias Vale.”

“Relationship to Emma Mercer?”

“Half-brother.”

There.

Different father?

Yes.

Richard Vale was Emma’s biological father.

Nathan was Margaret Vale’s son from a later relationship?

No.

Let's make it simpler.

Richard had an affair before marriage and Nathan was his son, acknowledged privately but not publicly.

That would explain hidden sibling but same surname.

Nathan said:

“My father had me before he married Emma’s mother.”

Emma learned when she was sixteen.

Her parents hated scandal.

Nathan was raised by his mother in another state.

Richard supported quietly.

Emma met him several times.

Why did she never tell me?

Because Nathan had a criminal past?

No.

Let's not make that cliché.

He worked in forensic accounting.

Ironically.

He and Richard fought over trust.

Richard excluded him from family estate because he was born outside marriage.

Emma thought that was wrong.

She secretly stayed close.

Then after Richard died, Emma tried to correct.

But trust terms already favored Emma and her descendants.

Nathan had no legal claim.

He did not want Lily’s money.

At least according to him.

Then why Vale Family Advisory receiving $480,000?

He said:

“It was supposed to be a trap.”

Detective Hayes frowned.

“What?”

Nathan explained.

Three months before Emma died, she discovered irregular withdrawals from Lily’s discretionary trust.

Not huge.

$60,000.

$90,000.

Then $135,000.

All approved under expense categories.

Home security.

Child wellness.

Estate consultation.

Who requested?

Daniel’s mother, Patricia Mercer, sometimes.

Daniel’s brother? We need maybe central villain. Let's introduce Michael Mercer, Daniel’s older brother and CFO. But user opening says Vanessa sent by someone, could be Nathan acting not villain. Better deeper twist: Nathan is actually helping Emma's old investigation, while Vanessa was sent by Daniel’s mother or business manager. But "money moved to Nathan" needs explain.

Nathan said Emma suspected Victor Sloan, family wealth manager, was overbilling and routing funds through related companies.

She contacted Nathan because he specialized in forensic accounting.

They built fake advisory proposal.

If someone inside household tried to activate it improperly, money would route to controlled escrow monitored by Nathan.

The $480,000 had not been lost.

It was frozen.

A honeypot.

Interesting.

Then why did transfer actually happen?

Because Vanessa forged my authorization and initiated.

Nathan received alert.

He was going to call authorities.

But before, he needed know whether Vanessa was acting alone.

Then why not tell me?

Emma had instructed:

“Do not involve Daniel until we know whether his family is part of it.”

That hurt.

Then why did Nathan say Vanessa was supposed to watch me for Emma?

Because before Emma died, she had hired Vanessa?

Wait timeline: Vanessa is current wife/stepmother after Emma died. How could Emma send her into Daniel's life? Maybe she didn't. Nathan said "Vanessa thinks I sent her to you" but "she was supposed to watch you for Emma." Could be Emma had recruited Vanessa as a private household assistant before death, and after death Vanessa stayed and later married Daniel. That fits.

Let's establish:

Vanessa first entered family as an estate assistant/nanny coordinator hired by Emma during final months of illness.

Emma knew she was dying? User says late wife died; no detail. Let's set cancer? But no, then death not suspicious. She hired Vanessa to observe household finances because she trusted no one? Hmm.

Better: Emma died suddenly in a boating accident? But then hired Vanessa beforehand as temporary family assistant for forensic probe. That could work.

Emma discovered trust irregularities and Nathan recommended an inside compliance consultant: Vanessa Hale, then investigator at a private risk firm.

Vanessa entered as household consultant.

After Emma died in a legitimate car accident? We need late wife death. Let's make natural aneurysm? Sudden, verified. No murder. Emma’s death itself not conspiracy.

After Emma died, Vanessa remained near family.

Comforted Daniel.

Eventually relationship.

But she had originally been hired by Emma/Nathan to collect evidence.

Then she switched sides.

That is stronger.

Nathan said:

“Vanessa was supposed to document unauthorized trust access.”

I stared.

“She was working for Emma?”

“Yes.”

“And then she married me.”

Nathan looked sick.

“Yes.”

Then Detective Hayes asked:

“Who was original subject of investigation?”

Nathan said:

“Victor Sloan.”

Daniel’s family wealth manager.

Also perhaps Daniel's uncle? Keep one villain.

Victor Sloan had managed Mercer family assets twenty years.

Trusted.

After Emma died, he became adviser to Lily trust.

He had access.

Then Vanessa initially found evidence against him.

But instead of turning it over, she contacted Victor.

He offered her money and influence.

Then she began working with him.

Then later married me.

Why?

Nathan hesitated.

“We don’t know whether Victor encouraged relationship.”

Vanessa eventually would reveal.

Then $480k.

The escrow was under Nathan’s control because Emma and Nathan had set it as monitored decoy two years earlier, but after Emma’s death, account remained dormant.

Vanessa found instructions.

She thought it was real advisory channel.

She moved funds.

Nathan got alert.

So he was not thief.

Then why her call said “money is ours” to Nathan? Wait audio male voice is Nathan; he told her "do not say things like that", "placement record". That makes Nathan sound complicit. We need reconcile: maybe male voice wasn't Nathan despite assumption. Voice recognition? User says recipient Nathan, not caller identity. We can reveal caller was Victor Sloan using call masking? But assistant earlier said Nathan's voice from recording. We can change before committing? In Chapter 1 I wrote Nathan says he knew voice? Actually I wrote "I knew voice from camera recording" when Nathan called. That locks male voice as Nathan. Need explain he was running a controlled sting? He was pretending to go along with Vanessa to document scheme. That's plausible.

Nathan had realized Vanessa switched sides and was communicating with her while recording, trying to make her reveal Victor.

He said "we need placement record, not missing child" as a tactic? That sounds terrible. Could still be because he was trying to keep her away from physical harm and redirect to legal documentation while collecting evidence. But he didn't alert Daniel soon enough. He bears responsibility.

He admits:

“I thought I could keep her talking without Lily being hurt.”

Then chain.

He failed.

This gives mixed role.

He was not innocent hero.

Then why money transfer to him? controlled escrow.

Good.

Then Detective Hayes:

“Did law enforcement know your sting?”

“No.”

Bad.

Private amateur investigation.

Nathan thought he could protect evidence.

He was wrong.

He should have gone police sooner.

Then Lily paid.

This sets his accountability.

Then Emma’s death.

Natural.

Let's say brain aneurysm eight months after she started investigation. Sudden, independently confirmed. No murder twist.

Her investigation left unfinished.

Nathan continued alone.

Vanessa became deeper involved with Victor.

Then married Daniel.

Nathan stayed hidden because Emma had promised not to expose him due family scandal? Maybe he also feared trust fight. But after Emma died he should tell Daniel. He did not because he suspected Daniel’s family and eventually Daniel himself? He was wrong.

Then Nathan says:

“I thought you might be part.”

Daniel furious.

“You watched my daughter instead.”

Nathan:

“Yes.”

Then Detective:

“And today she got dragged toward washing machine.”

May you like

Nathan looks broken.

That is consequence.
