Chapter 4 - VICTOR SLOAN HAD BEEN STEALING IN PLAIN SIGHT

Independent audit.

Victor Sloan managed family finances for twenty-two years.

Most work legitimate.

That made scheme possible.

He did not empty trusts.

He inflated vendor contracts.

Related-party fees.

Consulting arrangements.

Over nine years across several family accounts:

Approximately $4.3 million in improper or undisclosed related-party payments.

Lily’s trust portion:

Around $610,000.

Some recoverable.

Then shell companies.

Sloan owned interests indirectly.

No magic offshore billions.

Then Emma noticed because one invoice listed “child behavioral consulting” before Lily was even old enough.

She asked.

Sloan brushed.

Then investigation.

Then Vanessa.

Then Nathan.

Then after Emma died, Victor felt safe.

He recruited Vanessa deeper.

Then “placement” plan.

If Lily entered approved therapeutic residence, trust could lawfully pay substantial care-management expenses.

Sloan’s firm would bill 1.5%.

Vanessa would receive coordinator fee.

He could also push investment authority changes under “special needs administration.”

Not automatic control.

But foothold.

Then Daniel’s own signature required some changes.

So they needed him convinced.

The physical abuse was about making Lily look troubled.

Then private evaluator:

Dr. Elaine Morris.

Vanessa had taken Lily under pretense of playgroup.

Dr. Morris’s original note:

Developmentally typical; mild separation anxiety. No indication for residential placement.

Victor altered summary before showing Daniel? He hadn't yet.

Draft altered:

Severe dysregulation, possible need for structured therapeutic setting.

Metadata from Sloan office.

Fraud.

Then Daniel read.

Sick.

Then he asked:

“Was Lily ever going to be accepted by facility?”

A place called Rosewood Early Childhood Center.

Licensed day program with optional short-term family stabilization beds, not long-term boarding school.

Vanessa/Victor exaggerated as out-of-state residential.

They planned maybe 30-day assessment, then seek longer guardianship.

Again incremental.

Then Nathan’s sting.

He had been gathering emails.

Why not law enforcement?

Because he feared his own past conversations with Emma could implicate him in unauthorized access.

And he distrusted police after family wealth influence.

Still bad.

Eventually he had scheduled meeting with federal financial investigator in three days.

Too late.

Then Daniel said:

“Three days after today.”

Nathan:

“Yes.”

“You gambled.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“With my child.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Then investigators separated charges.

Victor: fraud, fiduciary breach, conspiracy, forgery/altered records, obstruction.

Vanessa: child endangerment, abuse, attempted fraud, forgery, conspiracy.

Nathan: potentially unauthorized investigative conduct? He hadn't stolen. Maybe no criminal if no illegal acts besides impersonating adviser/possibly conspiracy appearance. But he did encourage placement language and controlled escrow. Prosecutors could consider obstruction/false representation, but if intent to expose and no gain, maybe not charge. However civil/professional consequences.

He voluntarily surrendered all files.

No trust fees.

He returned interest.

Then Daniel and Nathan relationship not immediate.
