Chapter 6 - VANESSA ADMITTED WHY SHE WANTED LILY OUT OF THE HOUSE

At plea hearing months later, Vanessa spoke.

“I did not want Lily dead.”

Important.

“I wanted her away.”

Why?

She was exhausted caring for toddler.

She had also become afraid Daniel would discover old investigation.

Lily had started repeating things.

“Uncle Victor comes at night.”

Actually Victor visited office after hours.

“She was three and noticed everything.”

Then:

“I thought if she went to a program, Daniel would believe she had behavioral problems.”

Then future complaints become less credible.

Again.

Then money.

“Yes.”

The fees mattered.

She had debt.

Before marriage, she had taken loans after leaving risk firm.

Victor helped.

She owed him.

Then marriage gave lifestyle but not independent wealth due prenup.

She resented.

She wanted paid role.

Then:

“I loved Daniel.”

The prosecutor asked:

“Did you love Lily?”

Vanessa cried.

“At first.”

Then:

“And later?”

“I became angry at her.”

Why?

“She cried for Daniel when he traveled. She wanted him, not me.”

Then:

“And Emma?”

“I hated being compared to a dead woman I had once worked for.”

There.

She had known Emma.

Carried guilt.

Then she married Emma’s husband.

Every day Lily was evidence.

Then:

“Did Victor tell you to drag Lily?”

“No.”

“Did Nathan?”

“No.”

“I chose.”

Good.

Then sentence.

Meaningful.

No unsupervised contact with Lily.

Fraud restitution.

No fiduciary roles involving children.

Then Victor Sloan.

He received more severe financial/professional consequences.

Disbarred? He was wealth manager maybe attorney? Let's make he was attorney/wealth adviser. Disbarred and industry ban.

Restitution.

Prison sentence appropriate.

Then Nathan.

No criminal conviction after cooperation, but forensic accounting license? He may have CPA. His private sting violated professional standards? Board reprimand/suspension perhaps for undisclosed conflicts/handling controlled funds without proper authority.

He accepted.

Then Daniel:

“You got off easy.”

Nathan:

“I know.”

Then:

“You still hurt Lily.”

“I know.”

That honesty prevented easy reconciliation.

Then trust recovery.

Of $610k improper Lily trust payments, around $430k recovered through insurers/restitution.

Remaining loss absorbed through settlements.

Trust remained around $12 million.

No crisis.

Then $480k controlled escrow returned entirely.

Good.

Then governance changes.

No single family member co-sign without independent review.

No care coordinator fees to household member without court/independent approval.

No related-party adviser.

Direct beneficiary advocate.

Then Daniel’s own access reduced.

He accepted.

“Even me?”

Trustee said:

May you like

“Especially parents.”

Good.
