Chapter 11: The Son Who Knew More Than We Did

Dad spent the next morning trying to contact Noah.

He called the number listed on his professional profile.

No answer.

He sent an email.

Nothing.

By noon, Daniel Price had located a residential address in Boston and arranged for us to speak with a local attorney.

Vanessa remained at the medical facility under the supervision of hospital security after Dad reported the missing documents and her involvement in the original records investigation.

Mom was stable, but the doctors insisted she needed rest.

Before Dad left, she held his hand.

"Marcus, please don't blame Noah.""

He kissed her forehead.

"I'm not blaming anyone.""

"He's been hurt.""

"So have we.""

She looked toward me.

"Especially him.""

I squeezed her fingers.

"I want to meet my brother.""

Mom smiled weakly.

"Then go find him.""

We arrived in Boston shortly after three.

Daniel had arranged a meeting at a small law office near the city center.

A man was already waiting inside.

He stood when we entered.

He was tall, with dark hair and a navy jacket.

The moment I saw him, I recognized the resemblance.

It was the photograph on my phone.

Noah.

He looked at Dad first.

Then at me.

"Marcus Bennett?""

Dad nodded.

"I'm Marcus.""

Noah extended his hand.

Dad shook it.

"I'm Maya.""

Noah studied my face.

"I know.""

I frowned.

"How?""

He reached into his jacket and removed a photograph.

It showed me at approximately five years old, sitting on a swing in our old backyard.

My mother was standing behind me.

I stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

Noah placed it on the table.

"Thomas Collins kept it.""

Dad sat down.

"Why?""

"Because he wanted proof that Elizabeth had kept contact with her daughter.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Did you know my mother?""

Noah shook his head.

"Not personally.""

"Then why do you have her photograph?""

"Because I spent years trying to understand why my biological father had two families and why one of them had been erased.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What did Thomas tell you?""

Noah gave a bitter smile.

"That he made a mistake.""

"Which mistake?""

"Having me.""

Silence filled the room.

Noah continued.

"He told me he had a relationship with a married woman before he married Rachel. He said she became pregnant, but he couldn't raise another man's child.""

I looked at him.

"But he was your father.""

"Exactly.""

Noah sat down.

"When I was eighteen, I requested my adoption records. I found Thomas's name. I contacted him. He agreed to meet me once.""

Dad listened carefully.

"What happened?""

Noah looked out the window.

"He told me I was never supposed to exist.""

My stomach twisted.

"That's horrible.""

"Then he gave me a box.""

Noah opened his briefcase.

Inside were several documents, photographs, and letters.

He removed one.

"This was written by Elizabeth.""

Dad immediately reached for it.

"Can I see?""

Noah nodded.

Dad read the letter silently.

His expression changed.

"What is it?""

He passed it to me.

The letter was dated three months before my birth.

Thomas,

You promised me that Noah would have a safe home. I know you are afraid Rachel will discover the truth, but he deserves to grow up knowing who he is.

If you cannot be his father, at least don't let him believe he was unwanted.

I am keeping my promise to protect both children.

Elizabeth.

I looked up.

"She was trying to protect you.""

Noah nodded.

"That's what I eventually realized.""

Dad looked at him.

"Did you know about Maya?""

"Yes. Thomas told me everything.""

"About the hospital switch?""

"Yes.""

Dad leaned back.

"Then why didn't you contact us?""

Noah laughed softly.

"Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.""

"Who?""

Noah looked directly at Dad.

"Vanessa.""

Dad's face hardened.

"How?""

Noah removed another document.

It was an email printed on paper.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was Noah.

The subject line read:

*Do Not Contact Marcus Bennett.*

I read the message.

You have no idea what you're getting involved in. Your biological father is dead, and Elizabeth Bennett has no intention of seeing you. If you contact Maya, you will destroy the only stable family she has ever known.

Below it was another paragraph.

I know where you live. I know where you work. Don't make me explain what I am capable of.

Dad stared at the page.

"She threatened you?""

Noah nodded.

"More than once.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't you report her?""

"I did.""

"What happened?""

"The person handling the complaint contacted me two days later and said there was no evidence of wrongdoing.""

Daniel examined the printed email.

"Was this sent from her personal account?""

"Yes.""

Dad rubbed his face.

"Why would she go to such lengths?""

Noah opened the briefcase again.

"Because she wasn't acting alone.""

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a courthouse with a man.

Dad leaned closer.

"Who is that?""

Noah answered.

"Dr. Samuel Reed.""

The retired physician.

The man who had supposedly helped my mother arrange the transfer.

Noah placed a second photograph beside it.

This one showed the same man entering a bank.

"Thomas kept records of payments made to Dr. Reed. There were several transfers over the years.""

Dad stared at the dates.

"These payments continued until recently.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Noah looked at me.

"Because someone was paying him to keep a secret.""

"What secret?""

Noah pulled out a final document.

It was a hospital report.

At the bottom, beneath several signatures, was a handwritten note.

*Patient Elizabeth Bennett — transferred under protective custody.*

Dad looked up.

"Protective custody?""

Noah nodded.

"Thomas told me your mother wasn't hiding from the hospital.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Then who was she hiding from?""

Noah's voice dropped.

"Someone who wanted her dead.""

Dad stared at him.

"Who?""

Noah placed one final photograph on the table.

It showed a younger Vanessa standing beside Dr. Reed.

But this time, another person was visible.

A woman wearing a familiar silver necklace.

Grandma Evelyn.

Dad went completely still.

"No.""

Noah looked at him.

"Your mother was the one who arranged the payments.""

Dad shook his head.

"She wouldn't.""

Noah slid the photograph closer.

"Then perhaps you should ask her why she signed the original custody agreement.""

I stared at the document.

The signature at the bottom was unmistakable.

*Evelyn Bennett.*

May you like

And beneath it was a sentence that made my hands go cold.

I accept full responsibility for ensuring that Elizabeth Bennett never regains custody of either child.
