Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Never Wanted Me to Hear

My mother looked exhausted.

The hospital lights made her face appear almost translucent.

Dad stood beside her bed, holding the laboratory report.

"Elizabeth, we need to talk.""

She closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"Is Noah my son?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Dad looked away.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing you.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You've already lost twenty years with me.""

Mom began crying.

I sat beside her.

"Why did you let me believe Vanessa was my mother?""

She reached for my hand.

"I never wanted that.""

"But you knew she was raising me.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew she was hiding everything.""

"Yes.""

I pulled my hand away.

"Then why didn't you come back?""

My mother stared at the ceiling.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she began telling us the story she had kept hidden for twenty years.

"When I met Thomas Collins, I was young and foolish. He was a brilliant physician, and he made me believe he could solve every problem in the world.""

Dad sat down.

"You had an affair?""

She nodded.

"Before I met you. I ended it when I discovered he was married.""

"And Noah?""

"He was born before you and I married.""

I looked at her.

"Did you raise him?""

"For a few weeks.""

Her voice cracked.

"Then Thomas arranged for him to be placed with another family. I was recovering from complications, and he told me the arrangement was temporary.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I wanted to.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Then I met you, Marcus. You loved me without asking questions. When I became pregnant with Maya, I believed I could finally leave the past behind.""

Dad looked down.

"But Thomas came back.""

Mom nodded.

"He threatened to expose Noah's birth and claim that I was an unfit mother. He also threatened to report the hospital transfer.""

I leaned forward.

"What happened to the babies?""

Mom took a breath.

"The hospital had discovered that both Maya and Lily needed urgent medical attention. Their records were confused, and Thomas was trying to hide an unauthorized treatment.""

"Was the transfer deliberate?"" Dad asked.

"Yes.""

"Did you agree to it?""

"Yes.""

Dad looked devastated.

"Why?""

"Because Thomas told me that one of the babies would die if we waited for the paperwork to be corrected.""

I stared at her.

"Which baby?""

"Lily.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Her condition was deteriorating. Maya was stable. I thought if I helped get Lily treated, we could correct the records afterward.""

"But you never did.""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because Thomas threatened to expose the entire arrangement. He said I would lose both children.""

Dad stood.

"You should have told me.""

"I know.""

"Even if it meant losing everything?""

She nodded.

"Yes. I should have.""

Her voice broke.

"I made a terrible decision, Marcus. And then I kept making smaller decisions to protect the first one.""

I looked at the photograph of her holding the newborn baby.

"Did you know Noah was alive?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he was Dad's son?""

She nodded.

"Thomas had lied to me about the paternity. I discovered the truth years later.""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"How?""

"Through a letter Thomas sent before he died.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you let Noah grow up believing Thomas was his father?""

"Because I couldn't reach him. By the time I discovered the truth, Thomas had already arranged his adoption.""

Dad stared at the window.

"And Vanessa?""

Mom's expression changed.

"Vanessa was supposed to help me.""

"Help you with what?""

"She was my friend before she became your wife.""

Dad turned.

"What?""

"She worked with me at the hospital. She knew about Noah, Lily, and the transfer. When I disappeared, I trusted her to look after Maya.""

I felt cold.

"Why would you trust her?""

"Because she promised she would protect you.""

Dad laughed without humor.

"She married me.""

Mom lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

"She became my wife.""

"I know.""

"She told my daughter you were dead.""

My mother began crying.

"I know.""

Dad stepped toward the bed.

"Did you know she was threatening Lily?""

Mom nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know she was taking money from your trust?""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you keep protecting her?""

Mom looked directly at me.

"Because Vanessa had something I needed.""

"What?""

"Proof that Noah was your father's son.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would she have that?""

Mom hesitated.

"Because Thomas had arranged a second paternity test. He knew the original records were unreliable. Vanessa obtained the results and kept them.""

I looked at the document.

"Was that why she changed my records?""

"Yes. She wanted to make sure the hospital could never connect the three children to the same family.""

Dad's voice became cold.

"Who was she protecting?""

Mom looked at him.

"Not herself.""

"Then who?""

She swallowed.

"She was protecting someone who paid her.""

I leaned forward.

"Who?""

Mom reached beneath her pillow.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a man standing beside Vanessa.

I recognized him immediately.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

But there was something written on the back.

A name.

*Evelyn Bennett.*

Dad frowned.

"We already know Grandma was involved.""

Mom shook her head.

"Look at the date.""

I turned the photograph over.

It was dated October 2026.

Only three weeks earlier.

Dad went completely still.

"That's impossible.""

Mom nodded.

"Your mother has been meeting Dr. Reed recently.""

"Why?""

"Because they were preparing to move the trust money.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Where?""

Mom pointed to a handwritten account number.

Daniel, who had been examining the documents, immediately recognized the institution.

"That's an offshore trust account.""

Dad stared at him.

"Can they move the money?""

"Not if the court freezes it.""

Mom suddenly gripped my hand.

"Maya, there's something else.""

I leaned closer.

"What?""

She looked frightened.

"Vanessa didn't just steal the trust money.""

"What did she do?""

"She changed the beneficiary.""

Dad frowned.

"To whom?""

Mom's eyes filled.

"To Noah.""

I blinked.

"Why would she give Noah the money?""

"Because Noah was never supposed to receive it.""

Dad looked confused.

"Then why put his name on the account?""

Mom whispered:

"Because the original trust was created for all three children, and Vanessa needed one of them to appear to be the sole beneficiary.""

I stared at the documents.

Three children.

Three identities.

One trust.

Then Daniel examined the final page and suddenly stopped.

"Mr. Bennett.""

Dad turned.

"What?""

Daniel pointed to a signature.

"Someone transferred the entire trust last week.""

Dad stared.

"Who authorized it?""

Daniel looked at the signature.

"Elizabeth Bennett.""

Mom closed her eyes.

Dad stepped backward.

"Did you sign this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel looked toward the door.

"Then someone is using your identity.""

My mother's face went pale.

"Not someone.""

She looked directly at me.

"Your grandmother.""

Before Dad could respond, my phone vibrated.

An incoming message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photograph of Grandma Evelyn sitting inside a bank office.

Beside her was a man I recognized from the police station documents.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Underneath the photograph were seven words.
