Chapter 13: The Identity They Changed When I Was Six
The officer's words followed me all the way to the police station.
Your biological identity was changed a second time when you were six years old.
I sat in the passenger seat while Dad drove.
Neither of us spoke.
My hands were clasped tightly in my lap, and I kept staring at the photograph of my mother that Noah had given us.
I had spent my entire life believing I was Maya Bennett.
Then I discovered I was Elizabeth's daughter, Rachel's biological child, and Lily's sister.
Now someone was suggesting that even that wasn't the whole truth.
When we arrived at the station, Officer Daniels escorted us into a small interview room.
Vanessa was sitting on the other side of the table.
Her expensive coat was gone. Her hair was untidy, and her makeup had run beneath her eyes.
But she still managed to look directly at me.
"Hello, Maya.""
I remained standing.
"Don't.""
She looked toward Dad.
"Marcus, I can explain everything.""
He pulled out a chair.
"You've had twenty years to explain everything.""
Officer Daniels placed a folder on the table.
"Ms. Bennett has agreed to provide information about the financial records and the original hospital investigation. However, she has made several allegations concerning Maya's identity.""
Dad immediately interrupted.
"Are these allegations supported by evidence?""
"We're investigating.""
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Tell him what happened when you were six, Maya.""
I stared at her.
"I don't remember anything unusual.""
"Of course you don't. You were a child.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"What happened?""
Vanessa opened the folder.
She removed a photocopy of a hospital document.
It contained my name, date of birth, and a medical identification number.
But the name beneath the original entry had been crossed out.
In its place was another name.
*Maya Collins.*
I frowned.
"Why does it say Collins?""
Vanessa smiled sadly.
"Because for three months, that was the name on your medical records.""
Dad looked confused.
"That was never her name.""
"It was.""
"You're lying.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"When Maya was six, she was admitted to St. Mary's after a serious accident. During the admission process, someone used the original hospital records to change her identity.""
I remembered the accident.
I had fallen from a playground climbing frame and broken my arm.
I remembered the emergency room, the bright lights, and Dad holding my hand.
But I didn't remember anything about changing names.
"Who did it?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Your grandmother.""
Dad stood.
"That's enough.""
Officer Daniels raised a hand.
"Mr. Bennett, please sit down.""
Vanessa continued.
"Evelyn had access to the original records. She wanted to correct the hospital's mistake, but she couldn't do it without exposing the original transfer.""
I turned toward Dad.
"Did Grandma know?""
He looked devastated.
"Apparently.""
Vanessa slid another document across the table.
"This is the original identity report.""
I examined it.
There were three names.
Elizabeth Bennett.
Rachel Collins.
And a third woman.
*Margaret Collins.*
I looked up.
"Who is Margaret?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Your biological mother.""
I shook my head.
"No. Rachel is my biological mother.""
"Rachel raised Lily. But she wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.""
Dad stared at Vanessa.
"Explain.""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Rachel and Thomas had a daughter. Elizabeth gave birth to Maya. But the original hospital records show that another patient, Margaret Collins, delivered a baby boy that same night.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Another baby?""
"Yes.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Why are there three mothers in these records?""
Vanessa looked at Officer Daniels.
"Because the hospital didn't make one mistake. It made several.""
She pointed to the document.
"Margaret Collins was Rachel's sister. She was admitted under an assumed name after fleeing an abusive marriage. Her baby was placed under Thomas's care.""
Dad shook his head.
"Where does Maya fit into this?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Margaret's baby died shortly after birth.""
The room went silent.
"Then why is her name on my records?""
"Because Evelyn believed the hospital had switched your identification twice. She wanted to determine whether you were Elizabeth's biological daughter or Margaret's.""
I looked at Dad.
"Did Grandma know I might not be Mom's child?""
He couldn't answer.
Vanessa continued.
"She ordered a DNA test when you were six.""
"Where are the results?""
Vanessa pulled another sheet from the folder.
"They were never released.""
Officer Daniels examined it.
"Why not?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because the results showed that the sample submitted under your name didn't belong to you.""
Dad frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means someone replaced Maya's blood sample.""
I felt sick.
"Who?""
Vanessa's expression became unreadable.
"Evelyn.""
Dad shook his head.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because she already knew the result.""
Officer Daniels leaned forward.
"What result?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.
"The DNA test showed that Maya was Elizabeth's biological daughter and Marcus's biological daughter.""
Dad stared at her.
"Then why did you tell us her identity had been changed?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because that wasn't the test result Evelyn was trying to hide.""
She removed one final document.
It was a handwritten laboratory note.
At the bottom was a second identification number.
And beside it was a name.
*Noah Bennett.*
I stared at the page.
"What does Noah have to do with this?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Thomas Collins wasn't Noah's biological father.""
Dad went completely still.
"What?""
Vanessa nodded.
"The man listed as Noah's father on the original record was someone else.""
Officer Daniels took the paper.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at Dad.
Then at me.
"Marcus Bennett.""
Nobody moved.
Dad slowly stood.
"That's impossible.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. It's the truth.""
I looked at Dad.
Then at the laboratory report.
Noah wasn't Thomas's son.
He was my father's son.
Which meant the three of us had been connected in a way nobody had ever explained.
Officer Daniels closed the folder.
"We'll need to verify these claims independently.""
Dad looked at Vanessa.
"Why are you telling us this now?""
She leaned back in her chair.
"Because I want immunity.""
Dad laughed bitterly.
"You think you can trade our lives for a reduced sentence?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I can give you the name of the person who ordered all of this.""
"Who?""
She stared at me.
Then she whispered:
"Your mother.""
Dad's face hardened.
"Elizabeth?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She knew Marcus was Noah's biological father. She knew about the second identity change. And she made me promise never to tell Maya.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Officer Daniels stood.
"That's enough for today.""
As he escorted us out, Vanessa called after me.
"Maya!""
I stopped.
She leaned toward the glass partition.
"There's one thing you need to ask your mother.""
I didn't turn around.
"What?""
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"Ask her why she chose to save you instead of Noah.""
I walked out without answering.
But the question followed me all the way back to the hospital.
And when I entered my mother's room, she was already awake.
She looked at my face.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Vanessa told you about the second test, didn't she?""
