Chapter 12: Grandma's Final Confession

Dad didn't speak during the drive back to the medical facility.

He kept the photograph on the passenger seat.

Every few minutes, he picked it up and examined his mother's signature.

I knew what he was thinking.

The woman who had taught him to ride a bicycle.

The woman who had baked birthday cakes for me.

The woman who had called every Sunday to ask about school.

The woman who had spent twelve years telling us how much she missed Elizabeth.

That same woman had signed a document promising to keep my mother away from her children.

When we arrived, Grandma Evelyn was already waiting in the hospital lounge.

She sat beside the window with her handbag on her lap.

Dad walked straight toward her.

"Did you sign this?""

He placed the document on the table.

Grandma looked at it.

Then she closed her eyes.

"Where did you get that?""

"Did you sign it?""

She looked at him.

"Yes.""

Dad stepped backward.

"Why?""

Grandma folded her hands.

"Marcus, sit down.""

"No.""

"Please.""

"You told me my wife was dead.""

"I know.""

"You let me bury an empty coffin.""

Her eyes filled.

"I know.""

"You watched me raise Maya without her mother.""

Grandma began crying.

"I know.""

Dad slammed his palm against the table.

"Then why?""

The room fell silent.

Grandma looked toward me.

"Maya, sweetheart, I never wanted you to discover everything this way.""

I remained standing.

"You knew my mother was alive?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"For how long?""

"Twenty years.""

I felt as though the floor had disappeared.

"Twenty years?""

Grandma wiped her cheeks.

"Elizabeth contacted me shortly after she left the hospital. She was frightened. She believed someone was following her.""

"Who?""

"Thomas Collins.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would Thomas want to hurt her?""

Grandma looked down.

"Because she knew about the hospital records.""

Daniel sat beside her.

"Mrs. Bennett, we need specifics.""

Grandma nodded.

"Thomas had been involved in falsifying medical records for years. He used private arrangements to conceal mistakes that could have ended his career.""

"Was the baby switch his idea?"" I asked.

"No. The original transfer was Elizabeth's decision. But Thomas used it to cover something much worse.""

Dad leaned forward.

"What?""

Grandma took a shaky breath.

"He had been experimenting with an unapproved treatment on newborn patients.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Are you saying he administered experimental medication without consent?""

"Yes.""

Grandma looked at me.

"The baby in Rachel's care was one of the patients.""

I felt sick.

"Was Lily harmed?""

"She survived. But Thomas knew the treatment could have serious consequences. When Elizabeth discovered what he had done, she threatened to report him.""

Dad looked toward the window.

"So he tried to silence her.""

Grandma nodded.

"Thomas told the hospital that Elizabeth was mentally unstable. He claimed she had become confused after childbirth and could not make decisions for herself.""

"That's why she was placed under protective custody?"" Daniel asked.

"Yes.""

"Who signed the paperwork?""

Grandma lowered her head.

"I did.""

Dad stared at her.

"Why would you help him?""

Grandma's voice broke.

"Because he told me Elizabeth was dangerous.""

"To whom?""

"To Maya.""

I looked at her.

"Me?""

She nodded.

"He convinced me that Elizabeth's decisions had put both babies at risk. He said she was willing to sacrifice one child to save the other.""

Dad shook his head.

"That isn't what happened.""

"I know that now.""

"How long did it take you to realize?""

Grandma looked at him.

"Three years.""

"Three years?""

"I discovered that Thomas had altered the medical reports. I went to the hospital. I tried to withdraw my statement.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa stopped me.""

Dad turned toward her.

"How?""

Grandma opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"She showed me photographs.""

"What photographs?""

Grandma placed them on the table.

The first showed Elizabeth sitting in a hospital bed.

The second showed me as a toddler.

The third showed Dad leaving our old house.

Grandma's voice trembled.

"Vanessa told me that if I exposed the truth, she would make sure Marcus lost custody of Maya.""

Dad frowned.

"How could she do that?""

"She had obtained documents suggesting that you weren't Maya's biological father. She threatened to use them to challenge your parental rights.""

I looked at the papers.

"She threatened to take me away?""

Grandma nodded.

"She told me that if I didn't cooperate, she would make sure you lost everything.""

Dad stood.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

Grandma looked devastated.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Vanessa?""

"Of losing you.""

He stared at her.

"You let me live a lie because you were afraid I'd stop loving you?""

Grandma began sobbing.

"I thought I was protecting my family.""

Dad shook his head.

"You protected yourself.""

For the first time, Grandma didn't argue.

She simply nodded.

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's one more issue. The document Noah provided shows that you accepted responsibility for preventing Elizabeth from regaining custody. Did you know where she was being held?""

Grandma nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"At a private medical facility outside Philadelphia.""

I looked at Dad.

"The same place?""

Grandma shook her head.

"No. That facility closed years ago.""

"Then how did Mom end up here?""

Grandma looked confused.

"I don't know.""

Dad sat down.

"Did you ever visit her?""

Grandma hesitated.

"Once.""

"When?""

"Six years ago.""

I immediately thought of the photograph.

The one showing Mom beside Lily.

"Was that when the photograph was taken?""

Grandma nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why did you go?""

"Elizabeth asked to see me.""

Dad's eyes filled.

"What did she say?""

Grandma stared at her hands.

"She asked me to bring Maya.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why didn't you?""

Grandma looked directly at me.

"Because I couldn't face her.""

I stepped backward.

"She asked to see me, and you refused?""

Grandma began crying harder.

"She wanted to explain everything. She wanted to tell you about Lily and Noah. She wanted to apologize.""

"And you didn't let her?""

"No.""

I turned away.

I couldn't look at her.

Dad spoke quietly.

"Did you ever tell Vanessa about that meeting?""

Grandma nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she was the only person who knew where Elizabeth was.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Mrs. Bennett, that means Vanessa had access to the facility.""

Grandma nodded.

"She visited Elizabeth several times.""

Dad stood.

"Why?""

Grandma looked frightened.

"To convince her not to come home.""

I remembered Vanessa's expression in the hospital room.

You're not supposed to be alive.

I suddenly understood that she hadn't been surprised to see my mother.

She had been terrified that the secret was finally exposed.

Dad took out his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Grandma grabbed his arm.

"Marcus, wait.""

He looked down.

"What now?""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver key.

"There's something else.""

She placed it in his palm.

"What does this open?""

"A safe-deposit box.""

"Where?""

"At First National Bank.""

Dad looked at the key.

"What is inside?""

Grandma's voice dropped.

"The original hospital records. Elizabeth's signed statement. And the document that proves who ordered the babies to be separated.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Who ordered it?""

Grandma looked directly at Dad.

Then she whispered:

"Thomas Collins didn't do it alone.""

Dad stared at her.

"Who helped him?""

Grandma's eyes filled with tears.

"Your first wife.""

I felt the room go cold.

"Mom?""

Grandma nodded.

"Elizabeth agreed to the arrangement because she believed it was the only way to save both children.""

Dad looked devastated.

"Then why did you blame Thomas?""

Grandma took a trembling breath.

"Because the final decision wasn't about saving the babies anymore.""

She looked at me.

"It was about money.""

I frowned.

"What money?""

Grandma reached for the key.

"Your mother inherited a trust before she married Marcus. It was worth more than four million dollars.""

Dad stared at her.

"Where is it now?""

Grandma's answer came slowly.

"It was supposed to be divided equally between all three of Elizabeth's children.""

I looked at her.

"Three?""

She nodded.

"And the person who has controlled that money for twenty years...""

She paused.

"...is Vanessa.""

Dad stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

But before he could speak, his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Mr. Bennett, this is Officer Daniels with the Philadelphia Police Department.""

Dad looked at Daniel.

"Yes?""

"We need you to come to the station immediately.""

"Why?""

There was a pause.

Then the officer said:

"We've just arrested Vanessa Bennett.""

Dad gripped the phone.

"On what charge?""

"Fraud, evidence tampering, and attempted financial exploitation.""

I felt my heart pounding.

Then the officer added one final sentence.

"Mr. Bennett, she has made a statement. And she's claiming your daughter Maya was involved in the original hospital transfer.""

I froze.

Dad turned toward me.

"That's impossible.""

But the officer wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing. Ms. Bennett says she has proof that Maya's biological identity was changed a second time when she was six years old.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Dad's face went completely white.

May you like

Because if Vanessa was telling the truth, the question wasn't just who my biological parents were anymore.

It was whether the name I had carried my entire life was even mine.
