Chapter 1: The Letter on the Kitchen Island
“WHY ISN’T DINNER READY?!””
Renee Bennett’s scream shattered the bright afternoon quiet of the upscale family kitchen.
Nine-year-old Maya stood beside the stove in a yellow T-shirt and denim overalls, her little pigtails coming loose. She held her infant brother against one arm while desperately stirring a pot with the other. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she kept moving the spoon.
“I have school!”” Maya cried.
Renee, dressed in a burgundy blouse, marched toward her.
“You’re not going!””
At that exact moment, Darius Bennett entered from the connected living room, his work bag hanging from one shoulder.
He stopped dead.
“What did you just say?”” Darius demanded.
Renee spun around.
“Darius, you're home early.””
Maya’s face crumpled. The baby whimpered against her chest.
“She makes me stay home every day!”” Maya sobbed.
Renee immediately reached for the infant and pulled him from Maya’s arms.
“She’s lying,” Renee said sharply.
“You know how dramatic she gets when she doesn’t want to help.””
Darius dropped his work bag beside the marble island.
“Maya, look at me,” he said, lowering himself to her eye level.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Maya wiped her nose with the back of her hand.
“She said you’d be angry at me.””
Darius slowly turned toward his wife.
Renee adjusted the baby against her shoulder.
“She needed to help with her brother. I can’t do everything alone, Darius. Someone has to contribute around here.””
“She’s nine,” he replied.
“And she’s perfectly capable of stirring a pot.””
Maya suddenly ran to her backpack near the kitchen island. Her small sneakers squeaked against the polished floor as she rummaged through the front pocket.
“Daddy… they gave me this.””
She pulled out a folded school letter.
Renee’s expression changed so quickly that Darius noticed it before Maya even finished speaking.
“Give me that!”” Renee snapped, lunging forward.
Darius caught the paper first.
“Why are you so worried about a school letter?”” he asked.
“Because it’s private school business!”” Renee shot back.
“You don't understand what she’s been doing behind our backs.””
Darius unfolded the paper.
At the top, printed in bold capital letters, were the words:
*PERMANENT SCHOOL WITHDRAWAL REQUEST*
His eyes moved down the page.
*STUDENT: MAYA BENNETT*
*PARENT SIGNATURE: DARIUS BENNETT*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Darius stared at the signature.
Then he looked at his right hand, as if comparing the handwriting to the fingers that had supposedly produced it.
“I never signed this.””
The baby began fussing. Renee tightened her hold on him.
“Darius, let me explain.””
He raised his eyes.
Renee went completely pale.

Maya stood beside her backpack, crying silently, while her father held the forged school document between trembling fingers.
And for the first time since Renee had entered their lives, Darius looked at his wife as though he had never truly known her.
