Chapter 7: The Name Beneath the Declaration
Darius didn't ask Evelyn Price to repeat the name.
He had heard it clearly the first time.
His younger brother.
Terrence Bennett.
For several seconds, Darius stood motionless beside the marble island, listening to the refrigerator hum and the baby make small, restless sounds in his seat. The afternoon sunlight remained bright against the white cabinets, but nothing about the kitchen felt ordinary anymore.
“Mr. Bennett?”” Evelyn asked through the phone.
“Are you still there?””
Darius swallowed.
“Yes. I'm here.””
“Would you like me to send you the complete declaration?””
“Send everything. Every page, every attachment, every communication associated with it. Don't alter or discard anything.””
“Understood. I also recommend that you avoid signing any further documents until we've reviewed the matter.””
“I won't sign anything.””
He ended the call.
Across the kitchen, Renee sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Maya stood beside her father, still wearing her yellow shirt and denim overalls, her backpack resting against her legs.
Darius looked at his wife.
“You listed Terrence as the person who would act on my behalf?””
Renee closed her eyes.
“I didn't have a choice.””
“You always had a choice. You could have told me the truth.””
“You don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
She glanced at Maya.
“Not in front of her.””
Darius's expression hardened.
“She has spent months living with secrets that were never hers to carry. I'm not sending her away because you don't like the questions.””
Maya quietly took his hand.
Renee stared at their joined fingers.
“Terrence said he could help me.””
Darius felt something tighten in his chest.
“My brother?””
“He said the paperwork would solve everything.””
“What paperwork?””
“The trust amendment. The financial declaration. All of it.””
Darius shook his head slowly.
“Terrence knows I would never authorize someone to take control of my affairs without speaking to me.””
“He said you would understand once everything was finished.””
“Finished how?””
Renee's lips trembled.
“He said you were going to be away for a while.””
Darius leaned against the island.
“Why would I be away?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe you signed legal documents claiming I couldn't manage my own affairs, but you never asked why?””
“I didn't think it meant that!””
“You didn't read what you signed?””
“I thought it was temporary!””
Darius looked toward the ceiling for a moment, struggling to control his breathing.
Then he returned his attention to Renee.
“Did Terrence tell you to keep Maya out of school?””
Renee hesitated.
“Answer me.””
“He said fewer people would ask questions if she wasn't going every day.””
Maya's grip tightened around Darius's hand.
“Daddy, is Uncle Terry coming here?””
Darius knelt beside her.
“I don't know, sweetheart. But you won't be expected to go anywhere with him, and nobody gets to make decisions about you without making sure you're safe.””
“Did he know I wasn't going to school?””
Darius glanced at Renee.
His wife looked away.
Maya understood the silence.
She began to cry again.
“He used to ask me about my homework,” she whispered.
“He told me I should always listen to grown-ups.””
Darius pulled her close.
“Listening to grown-ups doesn't mean doing something that feels unsafe. You can always ask questions, and you can always tell me when something isn't right.””
The front door remained closed. The baby had finally settled, but the house felt as though every familiar object had become evidence of something Darius hadn't noticed.
His phone vibrated.
An email from Evelyn Price had arrived.
He opened the attachment and scrolled to the final page of the declaration.
There was the signature, carefully constructed to resemble his own.
Below it appeared a statement naming Terrence Bennett as his proposed representative.
The document also contained a date for a formal meeting.
Friday.
Three days away.
Darius read the final paragraph twice.
“What's happening Friday?”” Renee whispered.
He turned the screen toward her.
“Did you know about this meeting?””
Her face changed.
“Yes.””
“Were you planning to attend?””
She nodded faintly.
“With Terrence?””
Another nod.
Darius set the phone down.
“What exactly were you planning to tell everyone?””
Renee pressed both hands over her mouth.
“I was going to say you needed help managing your affairs. Terrence said the lawyers would handle everything.””
“And where would Maya be?””
“At a relative's house.””
“Which relative?””
Renee said nothing.
Darius took a step toward her.
“Which relative, Renee?””
“My sister.””
“Does your sister know about any of this?””
“No.””
“Does she know Maya was supposed to be removed from school?””
“No.””
“Does she know someone was planning to change the arrangements for Maya's care?””
Renee shook her head.
Darius stared at her.
“You were going to send my daughter somewhere without telling the person taking her why.””
“I thought it would only be for a few days!””
“Based on what? A plan you refused to explain to me?””
Renee began sobbing.
“I was scared.””
“Of whom?””
She looked toward the phone.
Then she whispered, “Terrence said if the arrangement failed, you would lose everything.””
Darius's stomach tightened.
“What did he mean?””
“I don't know.””
“Renee, you need to stop saying that.””
She rose abruptly and paced toward the sink.
“He said the trust was connected to something bigger. He said if we didn't complete the paperwork, there would be consequences for the whole family.””
“What consequences?””
“I never asked.””
Darius stared at her in disbelief.
His brother had spent years helping him with family finances. Terrence had attended Maya's birthday parties, brought her books, and once helped Darius repair the backyard fence after a storm.
Darius had trusted him with spare keys to the house.
He had trusted him around his daughter.
Now that trust felt like a door he had left unlocked.
His phone rang again.
Terrence's name appeared on the screen.
Darius answered and put the call on speaker.
“Hey, big brother,” Terrence said casually.
“I've been trying to reach you. Everything okay?””
Darius looked directly at Renee.
“No. It isn't.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
“I found documents bearing my signature that I never signed.””
Terrence was silent for a beat too long.
Then he laughed nervously.
“Man, these lawyers make paperwork confusing. Maybe Renee mixed something up.””
“Why is your name on a declaration saying I can't manage my own affairs?””
The silence that followed was unmistakable.
Terrence finally spoke.
“Darius, listen. You don't understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From a problem that's been building for months.””
“What problem?””
Terrence lowered his voice.
“I need to see you in person.””
“Why?””
“Because there's something Renee hasn't told you.””
Darius felt Renee stiffen beside the sink.
“What hasn't she told me?””
Terrence exhaled.
“The money you think she stole from Maya's account wasn't the beginning of this.””
Darius gripped the phone.
“Then what was?””
Terrence hesitated.
“Ask Renee what she signed before she ever met me.””
The call disconnected.
Darius slowly lowered the phone.
Renee stood perfectly still, her face drained of color.
Maya looked from her father to her stepmother.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “what did she sign?””
Renee's lips parted.
But before she could answer, another notification appeared on Darius's screen.
It was a message from Terrence.
*FRIDAY ISN'T THE REAL DEADLINE. CHECK THE DATE ON THE ORIGINAL TRUST.*
May you like
Darius opened the documents again.
And when he found the date Terrence meant, he realized the family had far less time than anyone had told him.
